Song Details:
Two years before Mozart's first successful operatic masterpiece "Abduction from the Seraglio," Mozart began to write "Zaide," a German "rescue" opera that deviated from the norm of a male hero rescuing his lady in distress (like Belmonte rescuing Konstanze in "Abduction") and instead told the story of a heroine, Zaide, who rescues her lover Gomatz. Mozart never finished "Zaide", and the music was not performed until long after he died. Yet Mozart's unmatched genius comes to life in this, Mozart's most lyrical aria, "Ruhe Sanft" ("Sleep Safely").
Performance Details:
This production is from the M22 Opera Collection. It is special because this is the debut performance of Mojca Erdmann, a relatively new singer to the stage in 2006, at the Mozart Salzburg Festival. I have heard several different performances of this aria, and only Natalie Dessay matches Erdmann in heart and emotion. Johannes Kalitzke and the Austrian Ensemble for New Music provide orchestral accompaniment.

Ahhh, but we do. We listen to pop during the day when everyone is around, but we secretly listen to classical or neo-classical when we are alone.

I simply could not imagine a world without Mozart's music!
I spoke to Mojca Erdmann just recently and commended her on her talents and she was so lovely to talk to! She truly is a wonderful and beautiful woman as well as a great soprano! Brava!

When becoming famous Mozart became friends with a young enlightened nobleman. When he declared to the maestro that he was atheist, the young Mozart replied: those who do not believe in God cannot be friends with Mozart!
The haunting voice of Mojca Erdmann gives me goosebumps! Oh God what a voice.
Mozart was such a unique talent. Unmatched by anyone. Just incredible

Well.... what Wolfgang scribbled on the back of an envelope is still better than mosts final and best efforts.

Wow, I have liked opera since I was 9 years old. It's crazy how i still love it, the power if someone's voice can really move a person.
No one could have done an aria more beatifully than Mozart. He was the master!
Im proud that tunes like this are spread through outer space. Its one of the rare nice things what can mankind give to this world.
You are right the dimensions of the room means humans dwarfed by the world. The school desk means a "learning experience". The rocks on the floor obstacles in the way. She is urging him to sleep all you can do after a day of frustration fighting the world. "Until your fortune awakes." he will need a fortune to provide for her and her children. The hand gestures symbolize first suffering then a loving caress. Such is love one day a kiss the next a slap in the face.The vocalizations are beauty.
After a hard day of vulgar and blind existence this five minutes are the sun the rain and the certainty of something very important.
being Viennese, this is one of my very favourite arias. Gorgeous; stunning; very moving.

This young woman whom I've only now heard (for the first time) on youtubeis lyrical, melodic, note true, breath controled and overall delivery is only superb. Combine this with a sweetness of tone and even a kind of simple and uncomplicated voice - I think she's got it all in spades - it can only get better for her and she's really the one to watch when compared to the chocolate - box offerings of recent years.

Zaide is daughter of Turkish General .. She lived in Vienna during the years of Ottoman Empire territory in Eastern Europe.. Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart has composed the music inspired from his love Zaide at 1780 years. But it was published first in Frankfurt 1866 ..

Exquiste singing, Mojca. You sing this piece with ease. Very difficult to sing. Mozart is well known for challenging the voice.

Ravishingly sung - and ravishingly acted. The equal, in my opinion - of any of the later great soprano arias by Mozart.
So young and sweet a face, so mature the voice, but perfect all in all :x

My interpretation. Young love separated, she wishes the best for him. At the end, both older, still haunted. "The blues, nothing but a man thinking hard about a woman".
Note that is a contemporary production, Imagine a noise like steps on stage. Really this piece, and this version is sublime. I love it!

Amazing. Massive. The adaptation is awful but anyway, Mojca Erdmann is absolutely perfect. She doesn't sing the Mozart's Zaide... she IS. Such a warm and expressive voice, such a perfect performance is impressive and about to grow up. Thank alot for this to Ernest Alba, and to Dame Mojca, obviously

Listed as Mozart's 5th most beautiful aria for female voice. 5th. Reflect on that. Any other composer's best wouldn't even make the bottom of Mozart's list. The greatest artistic genius that has ever lived, and quite likely, ever will live.

I would recommend the Marriage of Figaro as the best opera to start with. Listen to and watch here theres a couple of good you tube versions. Get the plot and enjoy the music as it starts to make sense. Cosi fan tutte would be my next recommendation.
