Aspassia's first aria from Mozart's first opera seria "Mitridate, re di Ponto". Yvonne Kenny in the role of Greek princess Aspasia, the young betrothed of the king of Pontus. The Concentus Musicus Wien is conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. An excerpt from a film of Jean-Pierre Ponnelle (1986), available on DVD.

It's amazing, especially when you realise that so many 14 year olds now can barely read or write, except text language.

@@mscott3918 I’ve news for you most 14 year olds now can in fact read. The fact your pulling a “young people these days” shows how stupid you are. Whereas funnily enough, ~4% of teens in the 18th century could read. Stop making the past some fantasy land and educate yourself. Ignorant. What’s more, Mozart only being 14 and being able to compose was and still is a big deal. 🤡

@@mscott3918 Like Adriana Ferrarese... He hated her so much that for the Aria of Così fan tutte "Come Scoglio", he put a lot of high and low notes to joke the soprano, who had the habit to raise the eyes out during the coloraturas and to put the chin down with the low notes
@XPRT10R This is a HIP performance, thus the instruments are tuned to a lower A that would have been used in Mozart's time.

Maravillosa interpretación, a mi parecer la mejor. Ahora, me parece interesante, dentro de esta hermosa versión dirigida por Harnoncourt en lo musical y por Ponelle en lo visual, la manera como éste último eligió colocar al personaje. Se supone que el aria está dirigida al personaje de Sifare. Sin embargo, Ponelle ha pedido a Kenny mirar hacia la cámara, como si el aria fuera cantada, en todo nivel y sentido, para nosotros los espectadores. ¿Alguien tiene idea de por qué? Buena noche.

@Thrax1982 The concept for the embroidered panel of her costume is most possibly inspired by the work of English artist Mary Delany, who is also re-known for her paper mosaics, some of which can be viewed at The British Museum in London. The black background would have been totally avant-garde at the time and stood out elegantly. I have seen the original panels of Mrs.Delany's dress and they are botanical madness.

White City Gallery Mrs Delany was an interesting person. A friend of King George III and Queen Charlotte. She looked after the diarist and novelist Fanny Burney.

Mitridate est une oeuvre sublime et sous-estimée. Le meilleur seria de Mozart avec Silla à mes yeux. Kenny y est très touchante, surtout dans son "Nel grave..." bien que je n'apprécie pas sa voix fibreuse, résultat d'une émission trop tendue et peu saine. Par ailleurs, cet air et exécuté "come scritto", sans aucune variation dans la seconde strophe et avec des cadences assez pauvres. Ceci est fort éloigné du style de l'époque dans les théâtres italiens, surtout dans ce type d'air, mais certains vous soutiendront sûrement le contraire! Dessay en donne version plus en style, mais elle est discutable dans le rôle globalement...

Ponnelle et Harnoncourt ont fait du Mozart et pas de l'opéra italien de 1770 GLOIRE A EUX de plus ils ont eu la chance d'avoir 2 cantatrices EXCEPTIONNELLES. Dans la vie il faut OSER si cela va dans le bon sens. La haut Wolfgang-Amadeus a du les décorer de la médaille de "Grand Metteur en Scène" et de "Grand Chef d'Orchestre". Faire une critique "un peu négative" de ce chef d'oeuvre est un non-sens

It's all Harnoncourt who was a true specialist in "ancient" music (including Mozart) and just did the things right! His book about performing Baroque music is amazing! Such wise and complex thoughts not only about Baroque but about Music itself of all times and styles...
@DrKsdA Yes you are right: it is a semi-tone lower than the original key. Dunno why. I heard her sing it live @ROH and she did sing it in C maj!

True, but it's funny how you gave precisely one example in which the costume, being an elaboration on military apparel of the Antiquity, is much tamer than the more common insanely lavish embroidery, feathery, etc.

This just does nothing for me. There is no passion at all. Nice set and costumes.
