Es dificil encontrar un elenco tan expectacular como este. El poderio de Berry, la calidez y belleza de la voz de Schreider, la solemnidad de Chista Ludwig y la delicadeza y timbre de Gundula Janowitz.

Berryˋs sonor, warm basso; Janowitz with her angelic voice at its best; a silver-bright Schreier and a perfectly conducted Ludwig. Oh, what a joy to enjoy... Thank you so much for this precious jewel-gem of true fine arts!

He was Austrian, actually ; I am Frech, and, when I studied Latin at school, I was instructed to pronounce "spargens" "sparghenns", exactly as he does. Some decades ago, I would have been taught to say "spardjenns". What is more surprising is "sepulchra"n which he pronounces "sepulshra", and not "sepulkra" as I would have expected. But anyway... the fact is indeed his astounding breath control (and beauty of voice).

  • @jzero4813

Hard 'g' is the pronunciation used in Classical Latin - soft 'g' is Ecclesiastical Latin. Here each vocalist is using a combination. Hard 'g' in "Spargens" and "Regionum" (Classical), but 'ch' pronunciation (Ecclesiastical) for 'sepulchra' and 'judicetur', for example.

Walter Berry ist eigentlich viel bekannter als Opernsänger aber er zeigt hier seine große stimmliche Qualität und die Fähigkeit Fachübergreifend zu singen. Das Ganze mit dem großartigen Peter Schreier, und den zu ihrer Zeit unschlagbaren Damen Christa Ludwig und Gundula Janowitz. Ein Genuß!!

Thank god for the technology that allows us to see the great singers and conductors that we know by name and by hearing. I am thrilled to see Peter Schreier in this and other great works. Note how he barely moves, he doesn't use energy dipping and weaving back and forth. he is in control of that great voice with focus and no lost effort in moving around.

@Marilyn1122 This was released on DVD in 2005, but the original recording was made in 1971. I was particularly impressed by Walter Berry as most recordings drown out the bass's "Sonum", but he manages to make it come through seemingly effortlessly. I am not sure if he really does the whole phrase in one breath as it is possible to take some air in on the two s's before Sonum, but it looks and sounds seamless. How fortunate that this recording exists, and how good it is for a 40 year old one!

Here's the translation if anyone wants it: The trumpet will send its wondrous sound throughout earth's sepulchres and gather all before the throne. Death and nature will be astounded, when all creation rises again, to answer the judgement. A book will be brought forth, in which all will be written, by which the world will be judged. When the judge takes his place, what is hidden will be revealed, nothing will remain unavenged. What shall a wretch like me say? Who shall intercede for me, when the just ones need mercy?

This is my favorite part of The Mozart Requiem... but then again, I'm a Baritono, so I'm prejudiced ...and this fits right in my tessitura and passagio.

@simone qa Actually they're singing in Germanic Latin. When the piece was composed, Italian Latin wasn't the standard. Seeing as Latin was a dead language, every nationality had variations in pronunciation influenced by their own language. Some conductors and ensemble perform works from the classical and baroque periods with the pronunciation it would have had at the time, for authenticity.

to be honest, as a latin scholar it hurts my ears. It is inconsistent and sounds unnatural.

@@artemesiagentileschini7348 could you point out some major differences in pronunciation? How would you pronounce "judicetur", for e.g. or "sepulchra"?

The bass bariton (first singer) is Mr. Walter Berry from Austria. (I think, and i'm almost sure). Borne in 1929 and he died in 2000.
