The Qui Tollis is inspired by Bach's music! Which itself was inspired by Buxtehude's. Don't get me wrong, this is one of the most stunning thing ever composed. But "ahead of its time" is the last thing you could say to describe it ! There are other pieces composed by Mozart that could claim such title (his piano concerto's romances, for example). But please go listen to the Crucifixus to Bach's Mass in B minor, you'll hear how not ahead of its time this is.

@@herved.2063 Harmonically speaking, this is waaay ahead of it’s time, in fact, I don’t think anybody has ever been able to match Mozart in terms of harmonic perfection ever since (at least not as of yet), as it would be a Herculean task to do so. Technically speaking, you are correct. But then again, when you listen to Mozart, you shouldn’t look at his framework, but rather his paintings! That is what he is known for, and why many people come to love him so much.

@@Mr_Classical I agree with this statement. It depends on the composer. When you listen to J.S. Bach, take his Goldberg Variations for example, you hear a development in terms of complexity and technicality. A simple subject reimagined several times, almost to a mathematical perfection. Every composer, every human being, takes inspiration from something, either consciously or unconsciously. Some less than others. Bach certainly was more original in terms of technique and style, but Mozart was certainly more original in terms of harmonic perfection and beauty. At the end of the day though, all this remains highly subjective.

Not Bach, it's inspired by the movement _The people shall hear_ from Israel in Egypt by Handel kzread.info/dash/bejne/eoWHxa1vf5m5pKw.html Mozart's Qui Tollis is not much compared, for example, to that of Zelenka (a Czech baroque composer whom Bach admired): kzread.info/dash/bejne/pGusx6aymMu0gco.html
