Mozart: Eine kleine Nachtmusik | Gewandhaus Quartet with Stefan Adelmann (double bass)

Музыка

It’s one of the most emblematic pieces of classical music ever: Mozart’s Serenade in G major (K. 525), widely known as ‘Eine kleine Nachtmusik’, performed by the Gewandhaus Quartet in the stunning surroundings of the Rammenau Baroque Castle in 2005.
(00:00) I. Allegro
(05:22) II. Romance (Andante)
(10:56) III. Menuetto (Allegretto)
(13:06) IV. Rondo (Allegro)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) composed this lively serenade in the summer of 1787, at the height of his success. While the piece was originally composed for two violins, a viola, a cello and a double bass - as is the configuration of this performance - it is nowadays more commonly performed as an orchestral arrangement.
Out of the many serenades, divertimenti and cassations Mozart wrote during his lifetime, ‘Eine kleine Nachtmusik’ is doubtlessly his most famous work of chamber music. During the late 18th century, such light entertainment ensemble pieces enjoyed immense success and were often performed during social occasions, particularly in outdoor locations such as gardens and parks.
The four-piece serenade opens with an allegro in sonata form, followed by a slower, lyrical second movement and a minuet, and finishes on an energetically joyful rondo. The melodic lightness and effortlessness typical for this genre of music is present throughout all four movements.
The Gewandhaus Quartet (also named Leipzig Gewandhaus Quartet) was founded in 1808 and is considered one of the first professional quartets in the world. It is composed of the soloists and concertmasters of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Throughout the years, numerous premieres of quartets by renowned composers have been performed by the Gewandhaus Quartet.
Playing at this concert:
Frank-Michael Erben (1st violin)
Conrad Suske (2nd violin)
Volker Metz (viola)
Jürnjakob Timm (cello)
Stefan Adelmann (double bass)

Hard to believe this "large" sound is coming from 5 musicians. The genius of Mozart. Even when this is distilled down to an ensemble it still sounds so big. Of course it helps to have stellar players at this level performing it. Loved it!!

The "large" sound is due to the genius of the architect who designed the room in the Baroque castle where the musicians are performing. Do you suppose serenades by other composers in Mozart's time had to be played by philharmonic orchestras because they lacked the "genius" to make a small ensemble sound "large"? Serenades in Mozart's time were meant to be performed by small ensembles in grand residences with resonant acoustics, not in recording studios or concert halls.

@@herrickinman9303 I'm quite sure others sounded good. Vivaldi for example (who died in 1741) who preceded Mozart by a few years got incredible things from small ensembles of no more than 12 to 15 pieces but usually smaller, typical of his era. He was considered baroque, but if you listen closely, he foreshadowed the coming classical music. Mozart, who died in 1791 was on the forefront of classicism and wrote for bigger orchestras along with many many pieces for smaller ensembles. I was just simply pointing out how good this piece was along with the players even when distilled down to this size ensemble vs the size it was written for. No more, no less. Of course others sounded good. But there was a reason Mozart was Mozart. Lots of things occur to me by the way lol! However, I am just a simple man, stating the obvious in simple ways.

I highly recommend Eine Kleine Nachtmsik for anyone who is looking for an introduction to classical music. It's music that one can relate to because it has so many different qualities. When I met my wife, she had no knowledge or appreciation for classical music. Mozart's night music really inspired her and she began to seek out other classical music.

I had no idea that Mozart actually wrote the serenade for this combination of strings - I'd always heard it arranged for orchestras. I must say the original is delightful, so much more intimate and immediate, beautifully played too. Appreciate it very much, thank you.

Complimenti.
