Mozambique’s gas wealth - Insurgents shut down huge energy project | DW Documentary

Mozambique could be one of the world’s largest energy suppliers. Huge natural gas reserves are located off the country’s northern coast. But they are not being exploited - because of a brutal insurgency involving Islamist militants.
When giant natural gas fields were discovered off Mozambique’s coast, Western investors came in droves. French company TotalEnergies was among those to secure a lucrative license. In 2019, it pledged to invest 20 billion US dollars by 2024. The first gas deliveries were to begin in 2024.
But the French energy giant later suspended work on the project and withdrew all its workers. Because since 2021, jihadist militants have wielded control over large parts of the northern province of Cabo Delgado. They call themselves Ahlu Sunna Wal Jammah after the main Sunni branch of Islam. More than a million people have fled their homes.
Last year, Mozambique reached an agreement with faraway Rwanda to have its forces provide security for the gas installations and the surrounding villages. A force of 2000 Rwandan soldiers have succeeded in bringing calm to the area. Outside of the provincial capital of Pemba, it’s the only place in Cabo Delgado that’s safe. But whether TotalEnergies will resume the project, and when, remains unclear.

It's no surprise that such radicalization occurred in an economically deprived and neglected area. A military approach alone won't address the underlying grievances of the local people or the exploitation they face from France. Rwanda is making efforts to alleviate the problem, but it's more like a temporary fix. Hopefully, the Mozambique government will find ways to improve the living standards of the region, offer meaningful employment and education opportunities, and enable the local population to benefit from their oil and gas resources.

There seems to be haggling over who will supply security services for Total : the mozambiquean armed forces, the Rwandan armed forces, or the various local militias. The Rwandans seem the favourite in this report - they’re moderately francophone and moderately Swahili-speaking (as the locals are) too, and as the government far to the south in Maputo don’t seem to be (according to Wikipedia, where ‘Mozambique’ seems a somewhat fictional nation)

I am Chinese citizen who used to work in Afungi site and experienced the terrible insurgency in 2021.3.24(actually site was shut down 2021.1.1 for one month due to another insurgt). I would like to say, until now I still can't forget about the faces I saw when I and my expat colleagues evacuated by car ferry and finally reahced Pemba port, hundreds of poor locals who waited and stood for days and desperately waiting for their family to be rescued from Palma. That is a real heart breaking moment. I have nothing to talk about the politics or the things behind it. I just u all konw, Mozambique people have had enough for all the sufferings. It is a beautiful country with nice people, Mozambique serve a better future. Those humble Mozambican there deserve better life. fingers crossed peace will be back soon. bless those poor Mozambicans. Amen & Inshallah.

"French Total" so no one is missing out except for french total. They should get the company to teach them how to do it, pay the company a percentage for that so they can keep most. Its win win. Not the standard taxing and them getting only a percentage...

Am shocked that still in 2023 and some country's resources are being managed by colonizers. Tears fill my eyes seeing how malnutitionalized children and villagers are in the name of greedy leaders. I was brought up in such an environment but when you grow up, you start hating that life. No happiness in poverty dear ones. It has pained me seeing life changing liquid gas being mined and villagers are languishing in poverty. Where does that money go? The money isnt even used to tarmac roads, erect street lights, build schools and hospitals for the betterment of villagers. Its sad, where can i find mohamed gadaffi of mozambique???😢😢😢😢😢😢

I wonder if it's natural resource wealth is more profitable for Western multinational corporate shareholders if Mozambique is destabilized, corrupt, rife with bribery, and so underdeveloped that labour costs are low and there's no oversight over exploitative labour practices, and easily exploitable, or for Mozambique to be a developed, first world country with stringent labour protections, high wages, minimal susceptibility to bribes, and the capacity to control and profit from it's natural resources without them being stripped and sold off to multinationals... Nah, shareholders wouldn't possibly prioritize short-term profits over morality and ethics... No, never.

Unfortunately Mozambique, among other East African countries, and other parts of Africa, are kept unstable because it serves the interest of those with great financial means to profit when countries are kept socioeconomically/politically disadvantaged. What an atrocity!

There is also gas down in Vilanculus area. Sasol of South Africa, has almost full control of it. In the province of Cabo Delgado, one can also find the best ruby stones in the world. Frelimo leadership have been enriching themselves from these resources via kick-backs paid overseas…The Mozambique people, have to wake-up and demand more from Frelimo or vote for other party leadershi, in order to demand /get more benefits. The main hospitals in the Mozambique are the ones left by the Portuguese colonialists and no improvements/updating on equipment done to date…. 😔
