Moving to Virginia? The 10 Best Places To Live In Virginia | Job, Retiree, Education & Price

Virginia, a southeastern U.S. state, stretches from the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains, with a long Atlantic coastline.
It's one of the 13 original colonies, with historic landmarks including Monticello, founding father Thomas Jefferson’s iconic Charlottesville plantation.
When it comes to the best places to live in the United States, Virginia is among the top contenders.
Centrally located in the Mid-Atlantic region on the east coast of the United States, Virginia is an ideal spot to settle down.
Its location allows easy access to the North and the South of the U.S. eastern part.
Boasting all four seasons and beautiful mountains in the western part of Virginia, as well as miles of sandy ocean beaches to the east, this state is beautiful year-round.
With a bustling capital toward the south in Richmond and Alexandria to the north, Virginia isn’t just for lovers, it’s for everyone.
This is one of those all-inclusive states that remain appealing to everyone - the young and old, parents and their kids, millennials, and retirees.
Moreover, Virginia has the 11th highest per-capita income in America, and it homes four of the 10 wealthiest U.S. counties: Loudoun County, Falls Church City, and Fairfax County, as well as Arlington County.
Healthcare is a big deal in this state, and there is significant opportunity for economic growth, with plenty of jobs for anyone interested in working for the federal government.
The Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg are living-history museums reenacting Colonial and Revolutionary-era life.
Agriculture has always been a key contributor to the Virginia economy, and today 30% of the land remains devoted to farming.
Other key industries in Virginia are the military, government services, and technology, with Virginia having the highest concentration of technology workers of any state.
Here are the 10 best places to live in Virginia:
1. Leesburg. (Affordable place with high education)
2. Williamsburg. (For education, travel)
3. Blacksburg. (Safe city, low cost of living, best place to retire)
4. Alexandria. (Best downtown, with lots of jobs)
5. Chesapeake. (Best overall quality of life, low cost of living)
6. Charlottesville. (Best overall city)
7. Virginia Beach. (Best place to retire)
8. Richmond. (cheap place to live, good for education)
9. Arlington. (Best overall city)
10. Vienna (Best overall city)

Richmond and Virginia Beach are on the higher end for Virginia, but other places, especially Alexandria (my hometown) have low rates. I have lived throughout Virginia, and every time I move, I check crime statistics in my target areas and realize how spoiled I've been by growing up where the crime rate per 100k is in the hundreds, not thousands. I toyed with a move to West Virginia, and the staggering crime rates changed my mind. Hampton, Portsmouth, and Petersburg have the state's highest crime rates.

You did a GREAT job of picking out the most horribly expensive places to live in the Commonwealth. Nice places to visit, but not to live if you are on a budget. I was born and raised in VA, and the only one in your list I might consider is Blacksburg, and it is growing so fast and so congested, I would have to think long and hard about it.

Alexandria is my hometown, and I've also lived in Arlington, Fairfax, and Middleburg/Upperville in Loudoun. I've lived in Rockbridge Baths, near Lexington, in Monroe (outside Lynchburg), and Lovingston in Nelson County. The more rural places are spectacular, but jobs are scarce and services are non-existent. I spent the first four months in Nelson trying to find a primary care physician accepting new patients, and ended up going to Cville instead, a 2-hour round trip. Living in the more densely populated NOVA suburbs is absolutely more expensive, but you get what you pay for. Services are amazing, schools are among the best in the country, and the standard of living is higher. Medical care, emergency response times (EMS/fire services), crime is low (which surprised me, as I'd assumed that more rural areas were safer), and salaries are higher. Jobs tend to match the COL in a particular area, so it's more about amenities, QOL, education, and employment opportunities for me. I still head down to Roseland for killer views and Saunders Brothers peaches, but head home to NOVA once I get my fix. Luckily, there is no shortage of options throughout the state.

I guess Southwest VA doesn’t exist. Abingdon has the state creeper trail and the Barter Theater and lots of little shops. It’s in the Appalachian Mountains and there are lots of professional wealthy people, if all you care about is money. Virginia does NOT stop at Roanoke. Our mountains are beautiful.

I think this video uses average home values from many years ago, and does not reflect what it currently costs to buy a home here. Leesburg is Loudoun, and they quoted the median home price. I live in Fairfax, and it's expensive, similar to Alexandria and Arlington, but jobs are plentiful and median incomes are high. When I rented a cabin near Wintergreen in Central Virginia, my rent was cheap, but services were non-existent and my electric rate was insane. Highest electric bills I've had in my life. Great Vid. I've lived in Bedford County Virginia all my life. I've always though it is unique because of what it borders. The Blueridge mountains from the SW to the north. Which the Appalachian Trail follows the county border. James River to the north. The city of Lynchburg to the east. Smith Mountain lake with 500 miles of shoreline to the south and the city of Roanoke to the SW. Plus, the beautiful landscape. I can't imagine living anywhere else.

I've lived in Virginia ON and OFF throughout most of my life, starting when my dad's military career brought him (and the family) to the Commonwealth. I've seen a lot of changes in VA, including cultural ones. It's no longer the prominent southern state that it once was, as an influx of transplants has descended on the state. MANY of these transplants are from Northeastern states. The POPULATED eastern section of the state (from the DC suburbs down I-95 to Richmond and then southeast on I-64 to Hampton Roads) controls the state politics. >>> Virginia is NOT a low-cost-of-living state, unless you reside in a more rural area of the state. Property taxes are quite high, sales tax on groceries, personal property taxes on your vehicles and retirement pensions are NOT tax exempt. >>> Due to a career assignment, I currently reside in Virginia. Once that obligation ends, I intend to leave Virginia. You can probably guess where I'll be going.

A couple of years later, moved to Alexandria which is short-term but is a long story. In the year 1994. Moved back to Woodbridge in the apartment complex until moving to the last house in Dale City. Lived in the last house in Virginia from 1994 to 2021 until my family and I moved back to Georgia since my dad retired from working at Pentagon. Does Virginia have lower taxes than some states, yes. It is all relatives on your income and what it are use too. This is list is based on a number of things than just expenses. Also I know people have feelings about crime in their area but this video is to appeal to a wide audience not living in Virginia. The fact is that Virginia has a crime index rate half of what the entire nation is and most is not all places named have a crime index rate that is half the state. To say that these area are so unsafe as to stay away would be about the same as saying don’t live in 75% of places in the US as it is to dangerous.

I believe they were speaking of the town of Vienna here, rather than Tyson's, given the density figures quoted.

I would give back my British citizenship to return to Virginia, I'm a USA Naturalized Citizen. I was pushed out by one Fed Agent. No trial just calls late at night threatening. In 2010 I had given two files. One file contained Bin Ladens location, sent. Certified mail to NSA/CIA/Whitehouse. Each got copy - it was prior to raid..... Plus meeting with security. Then the raid took place all matched..... Location/date of raid precise/seal team 6 - plus risks attached .... The eventual helicopter vortex / funeral at sea on carrier include time. After the raid their were arguments, that's why in my view why the initial storyline changed - although the salient facts remained the same. I love the USA - nothing like it. I had been living in Old Town Manassas - Wellington Place with my then Govt wife. We both ended up on the street, she had been in just short of 30 years with the government. In the UK the marriage came to an end.... UK government refused her entry at Heathrow - possibly coincidence I don't know. Anyway I lost all that meant anything to me. In all of this my country the USA came, and still does come first. Since leaving so much has happened in the in the United States but it remains the very best in the world. (In the compound smouldering ashes piled up - yet the copter although confined did not spread them.... So would you burn what could be vital Intel, only if you already read it! But it was reported Laden's men lit it... But the copter would have blown it everywhere. .Of course I know more but that's enough. . As I say it's a fine detail to what ended a successful raid - yes I told the truth because I want home - I earned it)

They should absolutely teach the truthful history of a country founded by colonists who committed genocide against the native people, then built an entire country on the backs of enslaved people, fighting a war to retain the vile practice, and following it with segregation, red-lining, and systemic racism that persists to this day. That said, despite the natterings of the gullible, CRT is a graduate level course taught to law students, not elementary school kids. Loudoun is gorgeous, but there seems to be some bizarre gathering of teabagger spawn out there, dragging down the commonwealth. Mayhem at their school board meetings regularly making the news is not a good look.

I have lived in Fredericksburg and now just outside of Richmond. I left Maryland in 1982 and Fredericksburg in 2006 to get away from exactly what I am experiencing here. If you are worker that is just above the poverty rage, then life will be hard. The real estate market wants that easy money. Poor people live in luxury apartments paid for by the government.
