Moving to New York City in 2024? What to ACTUALLY expect.

Moving to a new city is a huge life change. If you're an average person wanting to move to New York City in 2024, this video is full of things you should know about the city before you arrive... from the current state of the city to my advice on what it's really like. I am a transplant who has lived in NYC for the last 7 years and have had a ton of experiences here both with roommates and living alone so hopefully you can trust me ;) I'm hoping me sharing these tips can help just one other person in their journey.

As a born & raised NY'er who will probably grow old here; my advice for anyone that decides to move here is to save as much money as you can and have a back-up plan. This is a fast-paced city and competition is everywhere in every industry. Come here with a logical sense on what YOU have to offer whether it be a content creator, administrative, teacher, your own boss, etc. Try to grow some thick skin. This city is not for the weak as any other big city area. There are nice NY'ers here, but at the end of the day; we all just trying to survive & make it here. There may be rejection; but don't lose hope. Times have certainly changed. As the saying goes; "if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere". Good luck to y'all

I grew up a bit north in Chappaqua. YES. My parents said for NYC: "plan to survive, get creative to thrive". Sometimes choosing to live away from the Manhattan/Brooklyn lifestyle affords someone their sanity and a better living condition. Some of my friends from high school who work or worked in the city use the NJT and MTA from far like Trenton and Peekskill, or Princeton for uni. One I know ferries in on the Seastreak and owns a nice home.

transplant of almost 12 years here. i've loved it here for the most part even though it has not been easy sometimes. new york is tough and it can feel as if it's chewing you up but once you find your rhythm it can be fun. this city moves fast, you have to catch up. i recommend going away every so often just to reboot. chelsea, i think your assessment of it was very objective. at the end everything is a trial in life and if you don't like it, you can always move on to the next city, country, or continent.

As a NYer I appreciate the thoughtfulness of this video. The focus on politics, community, and city funding that impacts so many who need it. Many influencers move to New York and show a very insular “aesthetic” view of the city. Many times with this gentrification they don’t even acknowledge the community around them. Thank you for getting so involved and using your platform to get others involved.

You're much more level headed than many youtubers that only talk about migrants and rats/trash on the streets. 😅I've visited NYC several times, but one day I hope to move to a big city for a year simply to experience a different life than I've known in the suburbs. They were like, "You could have moved anywhere else!" -- but NYC feels home to me/us. It's not an easy place to live in, but it has encouraged us to be more grateful... To enjoy the little things... To build our own chosen family who will understand the struggles and will help you along the way (in their own special way).

I visited New York for 5 days before the pandemic. One thing I learned is keep it moving. New Yorkers have places to go and things to do. Don't get in their way. One place I fell in love with was the Tenement Museum on Orchard Street. I went back for a second visit. I wanted to do one of their walking tours as well but ran out of time. It's fascinating to see the apartments furnished as they had been in the latter 1800's and early 1900's, and to hear the immigrant stories of ordinary families. It also explains some things about the set up of current NYC appartments in older buildings. If you get a chance Chelsea, you should check it out. I want to go back.

THIS IS HOW YOU INFORM!!! 💯 I absolutely love how you’re giving transplants real information about where they are moving to. I’m in PA not far from NYC. And we’re effected by what happens there with population growth because people leave the city and move here and just travel for work. So we’re having to keep up with what’s happening there, Jersey city etc. An it’s sad to watch the effects rolling down while so many are still trying to move their without intentions on actually even participating in the city outside of saying “ I moved to NY “. As an "older" viewer who hasn't lost my sense of "Could I or couldn't I?" do it, (live in NYC) -and honestly, I still feel like a 20 or 30-something, holding on to that dream, lol. I've noticed there's a large mature female contingency here in Chelsea's Comments. I sense a common denominator amongst a lot of us, echoing your sentiment. I whimsically entertain the idea of forming a group of us who decide to combine our forces. We find a place to share the rent and provide a mutual support system, all while each living out our long held dreams of living in one of the greatest cities in the world! Lol! What an idea, huh?! 😅🤔🤭 And oh!! I was looking for the cat Chelsea talked about finding in her local Bodega a while back! Diamond? Loved that story...

I have been saving to move to NYC for the past decade. I thought it was finally going top happen this year but a surprise hernia delayed my plans. It's my dream and it's always felt like where I want to make my home when I visit to investigate areas. I've been watching your videos for about a year now and I've written down so much knowledge from you! Thank you for the work you put into this channel.

Love that you plugged the library and emphasized voting! I live in Philly and won't be moving to NYC (because Philly feels like my home now) but libraries are so important to support and offer so much to residents!

Such a well-researched and genuine video, Chelsea!!! Love how far-reaching your advice is - from tolls to dating haha. From someone who's been in NYC since 9 years old, I still can't get enough of this city's energy and sense of adventure around every corner. There's nowhere else like it. My two cents to new people: stay vigilant. I don't feel in danger here, but I am cautious about not leaving my purse on the back of my chair at a sidewalk cafe, or getting lost in my phone/book on the subway with no regard to what's going on around me. You just never know who's gonna get on your train car next. Hard agree with the last point: community is everything :)

I sure wish I’d had access to vids like this when I moved to New York a thousand years ago (more accurately, it was 1998). It’s amazing to see how much the city has changed and how much she has stayed the same. It’s also very wild to deeply love a city that continuously kicks your ass, but I sure did! 🥰

That hurts my heart to hear about the library budget cuts. I grew up loving going to the library with my grandma. I hope someday that can be reversed. If the NY public library has the Libby system, where you check out books online, that might be one reason for the cuts. But libraries, as you said, offer so much more. Great video.

YES SUPPORT YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARIES. Even if you can afford to buy what you would check out, you already pay taxes for these items. Utilize them! Take the free classes! Attend the concerts! The library is the last pure place where people can just exist without the requirement of spending money.

Chelsea, it's so funny that your advice is exactly what advice I gave back in 2005-2008 when I lived there. Hard but fantastic and you need a tough skin to find a good apartment. Very thorough and thoughtful review. My dating experiences were hilariously bad and my favourite bar was Brandy's piano bar where you sing along. I laughed so hard in that place, it was brilliant fun. Most of the museums were free back then so I went all the time and I even treated myself to Opera at the Met. Good times. I transferred with work and was grateful I had work friends to start with that became great friends. I missed my family and best friends but regret nothing about my NYC adventure. 🍎❤

When I was in Harlem, my amazon delivery of running shoes didn't turn up. Later that week I saw the homeless guy downstairs wearing my shoes. I reordered the shoes and told him I had a package coming that I needed and asked him to look out for it. Got the package lol. He checked in with me, all proud that he didn't steal it. Lol.
