You are the one who know China more than me as a Chinese. Thanks for the intro about Chengdu I will travel there soon. Especially the links you provided about ppl’s exploration in other cities, it would be very useful for ppl who would like to travel or move to China, either Chinese or Foreigners.

Great to see the sights of Chengdu as I had my first visit to China this April and spent a week in Chongqing and a week in Chengdu. I loved the parks. I started learning Mandarin two years ago as a retirement hobby and it was so good to talk to the locals even if I found it hard to understand their replys. They were so friendly especially if I tried to say something. I was lucky to have my Chinese friend who I was staying with to correct and interpret for me. My most memorable time was meeting some village locals and chatting to them on my own. It is hard to start learning Mandarin I tried on my own for two years then joined a class in Liverpool UK. It keeps me motivated and I plan to visit China again next year. Thanks for the time you spend making videos. I was not concerned about coming on my own after watching how it is on the streets of China. My friend is a retired professor of Sichuan Institute of Fine Art and the sculpture in the University parks is fantastic. Perhaps you could make a video about the modern sculpture in Chengdu.

Dude!--excellent video!! I've been watching your videos for a few years now; I was very excited to see that you had moved to Chengdu as I have been contemplating moving there myself. What you, and a select few of others, have shared about "the du" has informed my decision to move there this fall!! This video is so well done, so informative, and paints such an honest yet excellent picture of Chengdu (highlighting a number of qualities I was seeking in a city) that had I been "on the fence" about the move--I feel this vid would have sold me :). Thanks for the vids man, please keep them coming!!

Austin: Agreed Chengdu is a most unique and desirable place not just to reside but to live. My only disappointment was the Museum of Science. The exhibits while once were state of the art have now becoming dated. However, the near by toy stores are fantastic! Travelling in the nearby mountains will give you many new topics and spectacular vistas. Cheers!

Austin, I have been following you and have enjoyed your KZread channel. I am considering taking a teaching opportunity to Chengdu and would like to bring my two kids (12yo and 9yo). Can you share any summer programs or activities they can do during my lessons? Is it recommended for children to spend in Chengdu? My kids are really great travelers who enjoy food, outdoor activities and culture. My daughter is so excited about the Pandas. She aspires to become a veterinarian and has spent every summer at animal conservatory camps in Tampa Florida. Before I get her hope and dreams up, are there volunteer opportunities to spend with the Pandas or become an assistant? Austin, I know that I am asking so much of you and you are the only SME I know. :) But anything you or the group can offer will be appreciated.

A interesting news: There's a GIANT airport being built for chengdu(It will be one of the largest in the world). Chengdu will soon be a very important international hub for trade, and investment, thanks to the "new silk road" plan. +Austin Guidry Yea hope so. My parents are originally from Chengdu, and I always loved the trips we used to take to chengdu. Chengdu is a very special place being close to Xinjiang and Tibet, it has a very unique culture there. I've seen with my own eyes how chengdu went from having small old airport, no subway, no nothing to now becoming a international city. Fun fact, the current airport for chengdu was originally built by Americans, to launch USAF fighters to intercept Japanese bombers during ww2. Crazy how politics can change so quick in half a century, China used to be ally to the West.

That will never change. Foreigner's don't understand our mentality. At age 5 I was invited to dinner with my parents, my parents warned me were going to a Shanghai-nese couple's home, and that they are cheap prick so don't make them look bad by actually eating the food, instead pretend to eat it. I didn't it what they mean until I got there. Their entree plate was the size of a tea cup dish. It was literally the size of plates we serve starters like peanuts in, not actually food food. So no we will never change, we think with our stomachs and our parents will spend all night playing mah jong and eat a mountain of sunflower seeds.

I've been living in SH for about of year now. Looking to make a switch, b/c SH just feels like a concrete jungle (thats impossible to escape). I'm considering Hangzhou, Chengdu and Qingdao. This is an odd question. I like Sichuan/Chengdu food quite a bit, but it always upsets my stomach. Do you or anyone you know have any go-to pills/foods to calm an upset stomach after a spicy meal?

Hello everyone! I was given the unique opportunity to work as a lecturer in Chengdu, Sichuan. Until then, I would like to make new friends from all over the world in advance, who have settled in Chengdu just like me. I come from Germany and I am a professional musician. Classical and Jazz. I look forward to every exchange of experiences. Frank, 53.

I’ve been talking to Andy..long story, but he leads a research team which wants to bring me over there on a special VISA to participate in medical research. While it looks like they’ve gotten approval to get me there-it’s not Chengdu..which my kids know by now, would be my preferred city. Still though, Andy says that we can probably move me to Chengdu sooner than we’d originally thought. It’s going to be at least next year before I can get there bc of Johns Hopkins (who partner with the Beijing team). Those fried rice balls..what are they called so I can look up the recipe? 😁. Yes, I LOVE Szechuan food...in fact, I need to check...I think I’m low on my LaoGanMa...(the crispy one...heaven 🥰 in a bottle!) Also, just curious..the universities there, how are they with “older” folks wanting to take some courses? I’ve still got quite a away to go; but Andy thinks once I’m actually there & immersed in the language; my academic background will “kick in” and I’ll be fine. (Although it took me about a month to translate a research paper a few months ago; I’m told that written scientific chinese is the most complicated to learn)

Austin In China I would LOVE to take a chinese history course, maybe a formal course in calligraphy and/or CBP. I believe I’ve mentioned my 83yo tutor who lived near Chengdu, (she & her husband recently had health issues and the family moved them to Shenzhen so they could help them). They’re both retired professors, she spent 20 years at Stanford and is who gave me an “education” on the REAL China, its recent history and amazing reforms and changes. She had also been tutoring me by video in calligraphy and Chinese brush painting-as well as the language; but I became so obsessed with all the supplies, scrolls and books on the Chinese Arts...I kinda neglected my language study. 😁 (PS clinical ADD gets worse with age and calligraphy & painting were SO much more fun than learning a complicated language 😂. Hey! I couldn’t let the 40+ brushes Lili and her family sent me go to waste! Not to mention all the beautiful ink sticks, ink stones, antique brush “washers”, handmade paper...😁) Lili’s granddaughter does marketing for a pet supply company-I’ve been helping with copy & translations on English e-commerce sites; the local post office has gotten a kick out of all my packages from China. Unfortunately, between distracting me from my language studies AND a nasty visit from customs enforcement, (Lili’s husband is also a retired MD who also practiced TCM. He’d sent some tea and...”silkworm larvae sacs”, seriously. It was supposed to cure my kidney disorder. 😂. The local police of my tiny town were like “Really Elaine? You want us to believe YOU were going to eat larvae sacs and Dr D knew about this?” 😂. Actually, I had NO idea what he was sending, they’d promised me it was nothing illegal. Uhmm..the tea for my sinus/allergy problems? I believe it’s called Ma Huang? Yes, it’s illegal. I wasn’t charged with anything.probably because they were too busy laughing at me and my reaction 🙄😂); BUT I have enough chinese painting supplies here to hold my own class! As my Sons friends there found out about my new obsession, they flooded me with more supplies. Between those & cat toys, I guess I attracted some attention and sadly told Lili my art classes needed to be put on hold, and PLEASE don’t send me anymore chinese remedies! 😁. I know the owner of a local health food store who has been able to get me some LEGAL remedies that they recommended. But my dear friend & former colleague, Dr D (Bill), is NOT letting me shrug off my illicit customs experience. I speak to his Med School several times a year and he always introduces me by telling HIS version of my customs story. That’s OK though...we go back and forth all the time. In fact, I’m seeing him tomorrow and need to put my “BernieBro” bumper stickers in my bag so I don’t forget them. 😁. He’s gonna kill me on this one...😁 I tried looking up “fried Szechuan rice balls” and got a recipe that looks like just fried Mochi, (not Szechuan, but listed as Chinese street food). Is that the same thing? I’m thinking of making some for my appointment tomorrow...sweeten him up a bit. 😁
