Moving To Braga Portugal - What is the best neighborhood?

Moving to Portugal can come with many things that have to be taken into account. Choosing where to live in Portugal can be a difficult decision. However, if you've decided to consider a move to Braga, Portugal, it is important to understand the layout of the city and where to look for apartments on the map that may suit your needs. Due to the requirements of getting a D7 visa, it can be necessary to rent an apartment, and many people choose to rent an apartment in Braga, without seeing it in person. The hope is that this video can help serve as an overview of living in Braga and direct individuals who have never been to Braga as to what are the differences between the areas and what and where you may find them. Choosing the appropriate area for you is one of the things that can help a person to have a successful transition into expat life in Portugal... but more specifically expat life in Braga, Portugal... In this episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter we'll take a look at the the map and look at the different parts of Braga Portugal and give you an overview into what you can expect if you decide to move here.

The video focused on the Historic Center where you can do many things on foot. However, it is a region of very old buildings (no elevator, parking space and heating system). There are neighborhoods with good infrastructure and newer buildings, such as São Victor, Lamaçães, Fraião and Nogueiró, and you will still be a 30-minute walk to the city center. Such neighborhoods have shopping malls, markets, coffee shops, laundromats, pharmacies, parks, etc.

Thank you for this explanation Rafael! This is very helpful, I am considering moving to Braga. It would be great if you make a second part video of the different neighborhoods/areas of Braga with names, just explaining the type of vibe of each one, (like old, new, trendy, hip, quiet, has parks, family oriented, modern, etc.) so we can visit them and be more aware of the places and kind of know where we would like to start looking for a place or research more. I haven't found anything like that on the whole internet! Thank you!😉

Muito obrigada! There are more and more KZread channel about Portugal, but still so few about Braga. I am moving into Vila Verde ( 15km north to Braga) next year. So this is super useful! Maybe some day you can make video about outskirts of Braga. Since many expat family likes to stay smaller town close to big town! Thank you again, and I love your deep voice!

Extremely helpful and timely video for me! Been researching the city but it's been difficult to identify neighborhoods. We've just gotten our passports and coming to Braga for a month in January to find a new place to live and retire. Hoping to find something suitable to purchase and then come back to the US and pack. We also want to have a place thats ours when we get there. Your videos have so much practical information that's been very informative and entertaining. I'm starting to learn the language and getting rid of my baseball caps! Your channel is just about my favorite now. Keep up the great work, it is so very much appreciated. Cheers!

Wow Wally! Thank you for the kind words! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the videos 😁 Don’t throw all the caps away! I’d like to see baseball caps become a little more normalized over here 😂😜 I can completely relate to the struggle of getting an idea of what the layout is before arriving, there hasn’t been a lot of content online that gives a good sense, even in video it’s tough to properly capture the feel of the city. If there’s anything in particular that you’re curious about the city let me know! 😁

Hi, Rafael. Thanks so much for this insightful video. Wife and I plan to emigrate next year and have chosen Braga as our future home, thanks in part to your efforts (also subscribed!) We were hoping that you would be able to show T1 apartments in Braga and thereabouts along with the associated costs and features and amenities close to the city center. That would really help people like us to get a sense of what sort of T1 furnished apartments our money could buy us. I wish you well!

@@RafaelDiFuria Oh, thanks but you really mentioned a lot already: Things like bikeability(in another video i guess) and walkability were quite interesting for me. Giving ideas about the neighborhoods was incredibly useful. Maybe looking into the "suburbs" of Braga and have show where it is nice there? Since the public transport seems ok, that seems like a cheap alternative to the city center. And since you've already brought up idealista: An idea would be to browse a few houses and "review" the locations and prices directly? Not sure if that would be useful content though.

We were thinking that Lisbon was where we were going to start off but honestly Braga is more the size we want and more of the climate we like. We're in Portland OR right now and this area of Portugal seems pretty similar climate wise. We'll be spending the day there Nov 17th so that'll give us a better feel for it. Not moving until next Summer.

There are for sure similarities between northern Portugal and Northern California/Pacific North West, but milder in the winter than the Pacific Northwest. I was speaking to a Portuguese friend earlier who was in California for the first time recently and commented that it has a similar feel to this part of the country.

Very helpful video. I never considered Portugal as a place to retire but we fell in love with the North on our last visit. Braga seems to be a good fit for an older American as we are. Porto is fantastic and other worldly but I think Braga would be perfect as it is a short train ride away. Again thanks for all your information.

Hi, Rafael. Thanks so much for this informative video. My husband and I plan to emigrate next year and have chosen Braga as our future home (thanks to you) However when we check idealista, it seems like there is no house to rent in Braga, literally none! Is it correct? I am a bit upset now and reconsidering our decision, do you think we need to consider Porto? Of course Porto is more expensive but at least, it seems there are many options...

Very useful! I have been wondering about the noise and activity level in the central area especially because there seems to be a fair every other day throughout the summer. A question for you on buying apartments: Who's responsible for the common areas, and is there a monthly fee to maintain them? I'm especially concerned about apartments in smaller historic remodeled buildings of 3-4 stories.

Imho, unfortunately PT along with a good chunk of southern Europe in general is not ideal for an individual who is looking for work in the location based where they will be living. Maybe there are exceptions but as a generalization this would be my opinion…

Decent in comparison to many places I’ve been, it’s a somewhat smaller comunity with a monthly meetup that can be from 20-60 people, but one of the kindest and most welcoming expat communities I’ve experienced. A large portion of the comunity are retirees but there’s a growing younger segment of the comunity as well.

Tiffany, there is a small but growing English-speaking expat community in Braga, who are very friendly, as Rafael stated. However, unlike expat communities near Lisbon or in the Algarve, they are not concentrated in any neighborhood or specific area. Most are scattered across and around Braga. While get togethers are held monthly in the city center and are well attended, you won't find a concentration of English speaking expats in any particular neighborhood or area.
