This is so interesting to me because I live in Finland and here we have specific apartments for students with way lower rents than normal ones (and they are "real" apartments and not like dorms etc) and we get monthly financial support from our government to cover the costs of living and studying. Most students do still take student loan but the loan rate is quite low and the overall loan amount is not as massive as in the US

I don't understand why there is this stigma on kids who live with their parents longer than has been deemed "an appropriate amount of time." I mean, everyone's situation is different. Don't judge something until you know the circumstances around said individual. I myself finally moved out (officially and more permanently) from my dads place only 6 months ago. I just turned 29. Did I feel like less of an adult the 9 years I stayed with him? YES! Because everyone I knew had their shit together before I did. Did I let it demoralize me and beat me down? Eh... sometimes. Mostly when reconnecting with a friend and eventually they'd make the "You still live with your dad?" comment. Ugh. All in all I'm glad for how everything worked out and I'm grateful for my experiences this past decade. It helped me get to where I am today and made me smarter about it because I had the chance to breathe and plan and save. I believe if I had moved out at 18 or 20, I would have made a lot more stupid mistakes. :)

I have a perfectly valid reason for not moving out (I'm 20 now..) Mental problems. I can't answer phones or doors, without an anxiety attack. The only friend I have lives across the country from me. Plus letting someone who is a danger to themselves, live alone, is very irresponsible.

Same, I don't understand but also...I don't give a shit LOL I'm saving rent money, I don't give a crap whatever people think about me. Actually, my mom said to me I should just live here all my life and build another floor to the already pre-existing 3 that my grandpa built. I have everything conveniently near: subway (metro), stores, markets, cinemas, malls, etc. Also, I own a shit ton of money to my university. I ain't spending that on rent, I want to travel.

What does it take? I will move out again with 30. I moved for uni with 19. But moved in after school was over. Then I moved to Canada and lived through some 5 airbnbs, until coming back. Then I had a crazy landlady with 29, where I lived for a while recently, until voiding the contracts, because the situation became too toxic. Actually, 30 is just a number, I have experience of being 30 for over 2 months now. Don't rush yourself.

I remember when I was in fourth grade, my mom and dad had told me this: "Once you're 18 and out to college, it's up to you to get a place, get a job, and start your life. We're okay with supporting you, but you need to do things without us." But after several health and financial complications on my end, my parents divorcing, and mom tearing her left meniscus *very badly,* here I am at age 26 living with my mom and her new husband. I'm allowed to live at the house, I currently have a stable job at my local grocery store, I take care of the house when my folks aren't around and help them with any heavy lifting things, and I put at least 20-25% minimum of what I make towards the family's bills/things they need to pay/save for. It's interesting to hear stories about people moving out, because not only is it hard for me to since I have health issues and a tendency to panic when left on my own... but perhaps it'll help me in the long run when it *is* time for me to go solo.

MrAwesome Matty, Please explain this to me (not doubting you or anything, I just wanna know) Do you just panic when you’re alone because a mental issue or just how you feel about being alone, you don’t have to answer, I’m just interested, because I’ve never heard of any mental disorder that gives anxiety/causes panic when you’re alone.

  • @mrawesomematty4584

I'm not sure it's a mental disorder, and I can do fine on my own for like a week or so, but... I just don't have confidence in myself to where I can do things without help and I panic if I mess up and there's no one to help me. I think it stems from having a very verbally abusive boss, my best friend's death affecting me mentally, and various other things, but.... I don't know it's hard to describe, really.

Yeah. I know what its like to have a sick mother... moving out is an experience, at first it will be hard and lonely, and you may be scared, but you will soon realose that having yoir own space is the best thing in the world. You dont have to move out far from your mother's, but I do believe you should... your stepdad and mum need their alone time too you know, and you can visit as much as you want. Good luck on your decision. Everything in a life takes a little courage and decision

I would say that it was because being cheap was in his blood but, Nigerians are way cheaper, for my father, somehow, a 15 dollar 2 pizza box, of pizza is expensive. *facepalms* and once, there was a huge sale on these cocoa packets so a box of 16 was $0.99 and he bought like, twenty boxes.

I never knew such cheap apartments existed, the only ones I've ever lived in were 1700-3000 a month. And so I kinda got this mindset where every apartment is overpriced as hell and full of roaches and there's nothing you can do about it.

After high school I was partying, dating around, and gaming. Working shit dead end jobs to pay for my phone, car, and video games. I ended up getting over that life and I went to college "late" for comp sci at 23. I'm 27 now and just about to graduate with my BS and still living with my parents. However, due to working the whole time I was in college I can pay off all my student loans day 1.
