I view the moment where the wife called her husband stupid and those other things as a way to convince them to go easy on him. We saw before that she's fiercely protective and didn't take well to that woman saying he can't do simple math so I don't think she actually believes those things. She says that knowing the stigma of mentally disabled people as incompetent and hoping that they'll see him as less of a threat because of that. It was the only way she could try to protect him still.

The Korean word 'ba-bo' has the same meaning as the English word 'idiot', but is used culturally with a slightly different nuance. It is often used to mean the same thing as blind love, and also includes cases where parents love their children.

Lee Gang Hoon (Class president) has a crush on Huisoo. Its confirmed by the writer and also when parents were interviwed for this drama, Bonseok's mom asks Gang Hoon's dad that does Gan hoon likes Huisoo and he said yes. Then Huisoo's dad jokingly said she took looks from her mother. She must be liked by everyone. Huisoo's dad also mentioned that the fighting scene in the water took 4 days to shoot. Shooting was done in winter only at night so staff created the whole stage and warmed up the water. Just fasten your seat belt for next episodes. It will be so much to process 😄

The kid in the sewer is not the little Bungaeman. He is the son of another merchant who sells fish.and fishtank. But he seems to possess the ablity to talk to fish like Aquaman. He went down to sewer to release and free the fish that was telling the boy that it wants get out of tank earlier. You can later see that exact fish passing by Juwon in the sewer. That was specially nice touch and paying attention to the details. The level of these film maker's and writer's attention to detail and leaving and retrieving easter eggs are just on another level.... unbelievable. I have never seen that level of complexcity in another dramas or movies before. I am sure that Aquaboy is another easter egg and we are going see more of him later. Can't wait.

In 2003, work began on the ambitious urban remodeling and restoration project of the central area of Cheonggyecheon, in the city of Seoul (capital of South Korea). This had been a project that had been planned for a long time and was executed by the Mayor of Seoul. The project consisted of tearing down the elevated highway, restoring the Cheonggyecheon River, and building a beautified area around it. The problem, among many, is that the street vendors had to be expelled, taking into account that less than 6 years before a terrible economic crisis had broken out in South Korea that impoverished many people, and although the crisis had already ended and had resumed growth, the consequences continued among the poorest, such as street vendors. And that is why the eviction for the enormous urban rehabilitation project generated protests, with some riots. The discovery of a mentally and intellectually disabled superhuman like Lee Jae-man makes the topic of the origin of superhumans more intriguing. Since when do these superhumans exist? How many generations ago did the first superhumans emerge? Are they the product of a genetic mutation? How many undiscovered can exist? Is its origin on the Korean Peninsula? In the case of Lee Jae-man, the fact that his superpower is super strength made it easier for him not to be discovered, but if his power had been the ability to fly as in the case of Kim Doo-sik and Kim Bong-seok would have been quickly discovered. Once again director Min Yong-jun's shady agenda harmed the lives of our heroes, showing the origin of his superhuman breeding program threatening the freedom and well-being of the future generation, which for him are merely expendable resources.

And here I was thinking we may have missed a significant moment in history. This street vendor rebellion once again highlights the synergy between history and fiction within the narrative. I also enjoy the conversation regarding where are the origins of these powers. What rules do they follow. Is this nature or manmade. A part of me wants these questions answered and another part of me enjoys the mystery behind it all. Thank you again for such wonderful insight.

@@pinkbloodsquad7766 Watch episode 14 again, there are lots of instance and clues that the kid(Sungwoo) will be a character for season 2. First, he sympathized with the gold fish and knew it was in distress so he let it free which we can assume he can talk to marine animals. Second, it was obviously shown that he wears a blue sandals, which we know that all the characters have their own color code. Moonsan(black), Bongseuk(yellow) etc for the kid it is blue which also signifies marine or water. Third, he is evidently the same age as Bongseuk, Huisoo and Ganghoon which means he will be part of the same batch. Lastly, the part where Juwoon just came down in the sewers, he saw the gold fish which looks like it was asking for help. All of these and just a side-character in that episode? No sir! 🙂

I’ve watched this drama already but here I’m getting emotional too 😭. I loved the protective wife making sure people don’t take advantage of her husband. Also we have now another strong female character that is protecting a physically strong character just like Huisoo’s mother. They are physically strong but emotionally and mentally they need a protector because we see both of these super dads could be taken advantage because of their abilities and they don’t get viewed as regular people who are human and have emotions. One is called the idiot and the other the monster, these names can be offensive words to attack people but both these characters accept these labels and try to just live their life, they have so many more layers than these labels that people who just look at them from the outside may see them as idiot and monster but when you actually see their story and their true selves they are more than these labels.

the fight scene was filmed over four days and the crew built the set themselves. when Ryu Seung-Ryong was under water, his feet kept floating up, so they tied a heavy piece of metal to his legs to keep them down. water kept going up his nose, so he put some cotton up them but because of the current, they ended up lodged in his throat and he had to hack them out. in the winter, the blood makeup on his face kept freezing over, and in the summer, insects would swarm onto it because the blood makeup was made out of sugar the actor who plays kanghoon's dad said the water cannon really hurt and it was really frigid. he was apprehensive about filming all the action scenes so the director showed him huisoo's fight scene and told him half-jokingly, "the kids already did it, so you should buck up and do it without complaint." go younjung who played huisoo kept slipping in the cold mud, and had to film in short sleeves and a skirt in the winter. she got so many bruises on her legs, jo insung who plays doosik, was aghast and glared at the director until he gave a meek 'sorry.' insung and lee jungha (bongseok) ended up with really bad bruises from hanging from the wires, and they didn't have time to recover as they'd have to film daily so they had to act through the pain. everyone worked really very hard on the whole show and its satisfying that their efforts are already being rightfully rewarded. cheers to more awards for this amazing drama and all who contributed to it 👏👏👏

2:42 I want to help you understand. The title of this episode is “the idiot.” There seem to be limitations in translation. I don't know English, but when I searched for it, I found a variety of words with the meaning of 'idiot'. I learned that there are words that are used as swear words, words that have a medical meaning, and words that are casual. However, in my opinion, there are fewer words for fool in Korean than in English. And the Korean word used in the title is a word that can be criticized depending on the situation, and is also a metaphor for the purity of focusing on one thing. I think this title symbolizes the various aspects of the class president's father. I am leaving a comment because I feel that the English translation of the title is slightly lacking in meaning. (The sentences may be strange due to the use of a translator)

If he only wanted to be seen then why does he not like it when huisoo revealed that bongseok was the one who cleaned his eyeglasses? Why does he only show interest in huisoo when he already saw bongseok float on that gym when huisoo broke her ankle? Why did he intentionally hit the badminton shuttlecock too hard when playing with bongseok when he saw bongseok looking at huisoo?

This episode also shows yet another example of synergy between recent Korean history and the fiction of the drama's history. In the episode, set in Cheonggyecheon in 2003, a public space created around a stream located in the center of Seoul, we learn that the mayor has announced a redevelopment plan for the area, which triggers protests from local street vendors and traders who live there. As mentioned, this is the reconstruction of a historical event that actually happened: Cheonggyecheon, to put it briefly (forgive the extreme simplification and any inaccuracies) was an artificial stream that flowed in the center of Seoul (in ancient times called Gaecheon). This stream, in ancient times, was fundamental for the development of the city. During Japanese rule (which renamed Gaecheon to Cheonggyecheon, its current name), no more structural work was done to maintain the stream, which caused the deterioration of its banks and the flow of its flow itself. After the Korean War there was a huge migration of people to Seoul to earn a living who settled in makeshift dilapidated shacks along the stream. The ensuing degradation, with rubbish, sand and waste of all kinds, created an alarming situation, a real eyesore in the heart of the city. The local administration intervened including the stream with concrete for the following twenty years, starting in 1958 and subsequently, in 1976, an elevated highway was completed to direct the ever-increasing city traffic, becoming a symbol of industrialization and modernization of the country. However, over time, the highway deteriorated, becoming a constant danger, furthermore the highway was no longer as efficient as it once was due to the economic boom of the thirty years that followed its construction, thus causing constant traffic jams, resulting in increase in air and noise pollution, as well as not connecting the two banks of the river well. To do this, Mayor Lee Myung-bak approved the project, of considerable proportions and costs, of removing the highway and restoring the Cheonggyecheon stream, both to redevelop the area and to solve the traffic problem. The protests of local street vendors and traders, represented here in the drama, were due to the fact that this threatened not only their work, but also their homes (basically, if they demolish the area, your home and business will have to disappear). The government, in response, implemented measures to help these people including financial aid, the move to a logistics complex and the relocation of street vendors to the Dongdaemun stadium (which in the following year became a flea market where the aforementioned street vendors settled in). Although many accepted the situation and the aid offered, obviously, the protests of the most die-hard local traders and the operations of the riot police squads, seen in the episode, actually occurred. Clearly, all these initiatives by the mayor to safeguard those who lived in those areas did not go very well for many, as often happens when an area left to degradation and illegal construction for years is redeveloped. Having said that, the restoration of the stream and the expansion of preferential lanes for public transport were a success, because it solved the traffic problem by encouraging public transport, consequently reducing car fuel emissions and reducing noise pollution. . Furthermore, the restoration of the stream has brought enormous benefits to the environment by acting as a natural air conditioner and increasing biodiversity, which has also led the area to be positive for tourism. However, excluding the fact that several hundred cubic meters of water must often be pumped from the Han River to keep the flow of the stream constant, which somewhat undermines the sustainability of the project. At the beginning of the episode we see a bird's eye view of Cheonggyecheon, before the restoration of the stream: that is obviously a very well done CGI reconstruction of what the area was like before the elevated highway was demolished. Coming instead to what the episode tells, I bring a small reflection on the title of the episode: the title is "the idiot" and this term was used to translate the term "babo", which actually means "idiot" and leads us to think, correctly, that it refers to Lee Jae-man, i.e. "the village idiot", as he is the protagonist of the episode. However, it could be a broader reference to both Jae-man and Ju-won: in Korean there are these phrases: “ddal babo” and “ahdeul babo” which translate to “idiot son” and “idiot daughter”, but not are to be understood literally, but rather we mean those parents who would do anything for their children because they are blinded by the love they feel for them. From this perspective, both Jae-man's and Ju-won's stories fit perfectly with this interpretation, given that they both make extreme gestures for their children. Among the characters present, Jae-man is the one who has remained the most hidden and we are finally given a background on him and, consequently, on Gang-hoon: if in the previous episodes we only had some suspicions, now we are given confirmation that Jae -man is mentally retarded, incapable of expressing himself eloquently (in fact he stutters) or of processing complex thoughts, at least apparently. I found it interesting that he doesn't hide his power in the neighborhood when we see him carrying all those packages on his back like it was nothing, so much so that everyone there knows how strong he is. We also finally understand why he is so obsessed with his son that he waits for him, at specific times, when he returns from school: he partly feels guilty when his newborn son, when Jae-man almost killed a man who attacked his wife, which caused him the arrest and years in prison, Gang-hoon risked burning to death due to a short circuit (from which we finally understand where the scar that Gang-hoon has on his elbow comes from), but above all for failing to keep the promise he made that night to return on time and with his mother. The word given matters a lot to him. However, I find it extraordinary the work that Jae-man did with Gang-hoon after being released from prison, to get closer to him having missed the first years of his life (and in fact Gang-hoon is initially cold towards him), with excellent results for other. From this episode, however, we also understand Gang-hoon's introverted character a little more: he feels equally guilty towards his father because, since that night, the government has kept him under house arrest and he feels responsible for this ( in one of the previous episodes Gang-hoon apologizes to him for no apparent reason, but now we know it's a reference to that night). The episode shows continued parallels between Jae-won and Ju-won: both considered monsters, but who do nothing but their best towards the people they love, in this case their children. Ju-won is also called an idiot (again to return to the title of the episode) as much as Jae-man for letting the latter go believing, rightly, that he would go to his son and not run away, because he is a father like him. In this whole matter the real monster is Min Yong-jun, incapable of conceiving human behavior, such as when the police stops following his orders to start looking for the child missing during the storm, who does not understand Ju-won's behavior when he says he wants to be closer to his daughter now that he is a widower; I find the expression of satisfaction when Yong-jun realizes that superhuman powers can transfer through genes disturbingly wonderful, which is counterbalanced by the shocked face of horror when Ju-won realizes that Hui-soo might end up in the clutches of he. In addition to this, Ju-won has now realized that the good of the country is not being done at the NIS, and this episode is the straw that breaks the camel's back in making the decision to flee the agency. The line he uses when Ju-won runs away in the middle of the night with Hui-soo is wonderful when he calls Hui-soo everything he has, which touches anyone's heart knowing how much he has lost in his life. The clash between Jae-man and Ju-won is certainly among the most spectacular seen so far in the series, but also the most emotionally felt, because they are two good men forced to fight by circumstances, or rather by a horrible man who does not there is no scruple. It is undoubtedly touching when we see Jae-man and Ju-won collaborate to break through the wall to save the child, with the former having just reawakened, but who immediately understands that situation and does not hesitate and collaborate with his opponent who he had just beaten him. This says a lot about him, but also about how he is underestimated just because apparently he isn't normal. Obviously the child who falls into the manhole cannot be Gye-do, the bus driver, also because if that were the case, in 2018 he would be the same age as Bong-seok and the others, instead he is an adult man in 2018 with a driver job. Bungaeman's merchandise is just a wink to the fact that he is the hero of all children, kind of like an American kid having spider-man slippers, say.

The reason why it is emphasized at the beginning of the drama that it is fiction is because the drama was created by adding fiction based on actual events. 1987 airplane terrorist attack 1990 war on crime 1994 Kim Il-sung's death 1996 North Korean infiltration incident etc.. There's a bit of mystery, like Area 51. So it doesn't matter if you don't know, but if you have knowledge of Korean history, you can enjoy it more.

Dumb is also a cute swear word in Korea...In Korea, there are many words in one word meaning, so you have to write them correctly That's why I often don't understand Korean translations when I look at English translations

That aquarium neighbor lady was so rude and snooty had the nerve to say that her husband can’t do simple math. I just wished the Wife would’ve popped off on at her and say but at least my husband and the father of my child is here and where’s your husband? , where’s the father of your child cuz I don’t see him and he’s not here to raise your kid so keep that mouth shut.

As a Korean I got a question. How on earth do all you internationals know so much in depth history of Korea?! It’s crazy. I mean it’s awesome. But I am so curious. Why would you guys know in detail about Cheonggyecheon?

Along the siries, I'm trying to establish the superpower perimeter but still confused. Apparently, the one with super strength can hit hard but is also vulnerable to getting hurt. What I don't understand, the self regenerate power can stand hits but how can he compete with strength? How could he manhandle the super strength guy? The strong guy could easily rip off his handcuffed hand

The translation of the drama's dialogue was incorrect. There are too many poor translations of Korean into foreign languages. In this episode, the police's warning was translated as "This is an illegal protest," which is clearly an error. There is no such thing as illegal protests in Korea. It is only that during protests, there may be illegal acts such as damage to public assets, infringement on other people's private land, excessive noise in residential areas, assault, and theft. Even in the drama, the police said, “You are engaged in an illegal occupation protest.” In other words, it means that occupation of public property (roads) where protests are not permitted is illegal, but it does not mean that protests are illegal.
