It is a fact that many doctors in Germany are dissatisfied. There are various reasons for this. In August 2022, MDR reported on the poor working conditions for hospital doctors. They suffer from working hours of up to 60 hours a week, bureaucracy in the clinics, economic pressure from employers and a lack of work-life balance due to a lot of overtime and 24-hour shifts. The same applies to junior doctors, as Operation Karriere wrote in October 2022. And 55 % of doctors and psychotherapists in private practice also rate their economic situation as poor, compared to 30 % in 2019, as reported by ÄrzteZeitung on 11.09.23.
So it's no wonder that, according to aerztestellen.de, “in 2022, a total of 2,290 doctors originally working in Germany packed their bags and made their dream of a job in another country come true”. Our European neighbors were of particular interest to doctors: as in previous years, Switzerland (730), Austria (276) and Greece (73) were particularly popular destinations. A total of 911 doctors moved to other EU countries. However, countries outside Europe also attracted doctors from Germany in 2022. Unsurprisingly, the USA is the front-runner here.
