Otis the eastern box turtle has spent the winter indoors in the beautiful enclosure we made him and he's been doing fantastic. Now that the weather has turned for the better, he needs to spend some quality time in the sun. Watch as Otis follows us outside to check out his new habitat!

Who is Garden State Tortoise?

We are a family dedicated to adventure, conservation of wildlife, and all things nature. We are a reptile rescue and breeding facility for more than ten years, offering refuge to those who need it, and working everyday to protect the beautiful world of reptiles in any way we can. It was so cute when you were leading Otis outside and he stopped. Then your daughter came into view and he made a left turn to follow her instead!

My eyes fill with tears watching this video and remembering our red-eared slider turtle (in memorian) who also followed me around.
The little guy doesn't have a clue how he puts smiles on our face! Really appreciate you all for what you do.

Yes!!!! Otis is the man. Every Box turtle I ever had or came in contact with and got to know seemed to have a great personality, but never like Otis, he’s amazing and one of a kind. You can see it in his videos ❤️

You and your deserve to be recognized as educators and rescuers. I follow the Snake Discovery group, also. I have learned to love snakes and turtles. If I had a huge backyard, I would have a Salcata!
I know my comment is two years after the video is made but it just makes me so happy to see the bravery and confidence of this small turtle as he races to be outside.
Ottis personality is unlike any other box turtles. He likes people, and sticks his head high right up 🐢to focus on people’s faces, as if he wants to eat people’s words. He is just precious!!

I suspect the super intelligent Otis was a dog in his previous life. The way he pays absolute attention to you is amazing. Love this interesting, unique little soul.
I heart Otis. he what brought me to the channel. Even as a big pet fan, and advocate for animals having feelings, emotions etc. It amazes me to see a turtle with such characteristics. I never seen one so outgoing.
He's so energetic and curious, it's really great to see him roaming around outside. 🐢😊If you set up a couple live cameras pointed into that enclosure to stream him wandering around, people would watch that, I bet you'd be able to monetize it to help support Otis and GST.

I would love this...axolotl owners have Livestream..no doubt Otis would be a star..he already is
Sir Otis of Jersey. Not only is he the friendliest turtle around, including mine, he is also a beautiful specimen.
Otis is so cute. He is like your third child. He doesn’t want to be part away from you. I notice he likes to follow you everywhere like a cat.

There is something so special about Otis. I don't think he knows he's different from you, just smaller. He can't get out but, more importantly, can predators get in? As long as he is safe.

Nope, as we discussed in the video, his pen is fully protected just like all the others here and he’ll be coming inside at night anyway. 👍🏻

I love how Otis follows you around and then just stands there reaching his little kneck up and stares. He definitely loves his owner!! He is so adorable!! 💕💜💕

I have fallen in love with the colorful and handsome Otis! when i was a little boy some 58 years ago. we lived near a woods that was full of box turtles. me and my friend mad enclosures to keep them in during the summer and let them go around mid august. we had this one turtle that either i would hold or my friend that would eat crickets from between your fingers. There would be a long line of little boys each with a cricket.

Getting to know Otis is fun. He's such a cool dude. I have a Louisiana river cooter. I have to show him where I dropped his food at even with him looking up as it drops into his tank so I have to tap by the food on the glass of the tank to get him to realize it's in the water. He's big and dumb but smart enough to know what his good container looks like so when I take it and let him see it he gets excited but still hasn't learned after many years of my feeding him that I've poured it into the water after I measure it into the lid.

I love Otis
My dad's favorite animal, his spirit animal, was a turtle. I've always loved reptiles, amphibians, and "exotic" animals. All animals, really, but the scaly and shelled ones the most. They don't make much noise at all, but they speak volumes if you know how to listen. My grand daughter (almost 10) is an animal lover like her Gam-ma. I almost feel guilty that there are more pics on my phone of animals, bugs and plants than of my kids and grands. Almost... 😆😉
