"Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" is a song written and recorded by Billy Joel. The track details the singer's disgust with the upwardly mobile aspirations of working and lower-middle-class New Yorkers who take pride in working long hours to afford the outward signs of having "made it". Characters have stereotypically ethnic names (Anthony, Mama Leone, Sergeant O'Leary, Mr. Cacciatore) and blue-collar jobs. Joel considers their rejection of their working-class roots (trading a Chevy for a Cadillac and buying a house in Hackensack, New Jersey) ultimately futile. Near the end of the recording is the sound of a car starting up and driving away; the bass player Doug Stegmeyer's 1960s Corvette was used.
According to Joel, Anthony is not a real person, but rather "every Irish, Polish, and Italian kid trying to make a living in the U.S."
"Movin' Out" originally appeared on Joel's 1977 album The Stranger.

Gotta respect Billy Joel. Excellent musician and performer. Big Shot is really good. My favorite is probably "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant." You're in? I'm "Movin' Out"!

Perfect! You must be in Billy’s band! That intro … is it duplicated by the bass player? It is very bass like.

Thanks! Much of it is duplicated and/or in unison with the bassist.
I really really need to know what the key change is at the end!

Why did you go to drop tuning cant you play all the same notes on standard tuning? i feel it would be easier due to the notes being closer on the fret board?
@MarkZabel

Hi Christoper. I used drop D tuning, because that's what is used in the song. The main riff requires a D note below E. So tuning the E string down to D is the only way to do it unless you've got a 7-string guitar. If you want to transpose the song into another key, such as E, it can be done without re-tuning. I find most people want to learn the song in the original key (here D) to play along with the record.
