    "Don't change things before a concert or something important" I have a funny story about that. When I was in high school, the 1st chair trombone player got his tongue pierced the night before concert competition for UIL in Corpus Christi. I'm a euphonium player who just used the mouthpiece I was given, i've been playing for over 20 years.. and for over half that time I've been using a Bach 1 1/2G.. which I just found out is a good bass trombone mouthpiece. If I switch to a euphonium mouthpiece like a Denis Wicks SM4, would that improve my tone and range just from using a proper mouthpiece? I never thought about it before because I could still get up to a high Bb with ease..

    Wow!! Such GREAT information and advice! I have a 13 yr old son and he needs a new mouthpiece for his tuba and I thought we should be informed before we buy as I noticed there are a ton of options. So he said he has a problem with slurring. He feels like its the mouthpiece that interrupts the slurring-or perhaps he isn't doing something right.? Right now he has a Helleberg (couldnt tell you the specs of it). I was hoping you could offer some advice perhaps specific to slurring.

    Lily Our Adorable Miniature Schnauzer hey! Glad you enjoyed the video. I have MANY students on that mouthpiece, and what I can tell you is that it is very greedy with air. He should make sure he is using a very focused column of air while attempting the slurs. Slurs can also be affected by the players strength of embouchure and will get better over time.

    I am a senior who joined a local band about a year ago after 30 years of not playing my instrument. I am trying to improve my skills, am taking lessons and our band rehearses twice a week. I use a Bach 7C mouthpiece, the one which cam with my student trombone 30 + years ago, on a Bach 36G Gold Brass trombone, which I recently upgraded to. I find that after an hour or so, particularly in the higher tones, my lips are fatigued. Would I perhaps benefit from a new mouthpiece? Any suggestions?

  • @Geoff_Tuba_UK
    @Geoff_Tuba_UK9 ай бұрын

    I played on the same mouthpiece for 20 years. Never saw any reason to switch. If it's not broken then why try to fix it? But a few years back (getting older) I noticed it failing me, so I started looking. More than a dozen purchases later I've settled on a new baby, but it was a costly search. What did I learn? (1) Only switch if you must (2) What is the configuration of your current (throat, diameter, rim width & shape etc) and what is it you want to improve in your playing? Vincent Bach literature lays out some simple pros/cons in mouthpiece configuration, eg. narrow rim improves flexibility, but fatigue increases. By using this, look at mp options that may help you then contact the mp maker and get some free advice. Talk to people you trust. But don't buy unless you've done this research. You may find some mp makers offer a try-return scheme. Best of luck.

    Well, for me, I just pushed it. I started in what was comfortable for me, then tried to push for higher and still maintain a relatively good tone. I don't know if this is good advice, but that's what I did. I started on the Bb that's an octave above the staff (treble clef C above staff) and then tried to push it without destroying my face and built my way up to the highest note I could squeeze and then made my way down to where I was comfortable again. Eventually, I made it all the way to F (TC G) in about ~2 months. If the center of your lips hurt, you're doing it wrong. You want the corner of your lips to feel sore. (Take huge breaths to support your sound)

  • @AKCEuph

    @AKCEuph

    Hey! That "Red Ring of Death" is cause by too much pressure being put on your face as you play. This occurs a lot of times with players who are either very tense as they play, or who use shoving the mouthpiece into their face to create higher notes. What I would suggest, use your air to create the sounds and notes you're trying to make. There should only be enough pressure to create a good seal between your face and your mouthpiece. Routines like long tones and lips slurs, if done with good air and a relaxed player, should help you ease up on your face a bit while you play. Hope this helps!!

    It sounds like your fingers are becoming weaker when you play technical pieces. If that’s the case, then you should probably try some finger exercises, maybe try playing up and down the scales at a comfortably fast tempo to exercise your fingers and become accustomed to playing faster. I don’t really know how much as I am still a rather amateur euph player, but I do wish the best of luck to you.

    Derpasaurus Recks hey man! In terms of mouthpiece if you want louder you would have to go smaller but your sound would take a huge hit. I would suggest really working on extending your inhale, and focusing your exhale. Also, lip slurs and long tones can really help build the muscles to help us play louder and sound fantastic doing it. Just a thought :)

    Gustavo Salvini so it would be hard to tell without knowing you and your playing a little more. A lot of people have a lot of success with the Helleberg, I however can never get myself to sound good with one. In general if you want to go higher a sharper smaller rim and a less deep cup will help with that BUT I will say what you’re playing on now is one of the sharpest rims I have ever played on. Generally for tuba MPs brands I like the PT series and the Denis Wick Ultra series mouthpieces. Hope this helps 😊

    Yeah I have never liked Helleberg either. I started High school with a PT (Perantucci) 90. However, I'd Recommend a PT-50 if you want to switch. Honestly any PT's are good to switch to (not much the 80's and above though). As of now I have found Giddings really really good and helpful for me, but theyre much more expensive. It all just comes down to how you practice and how often you practice. Of course switching mouthpieces, even if you have the best mouthpiece in the world, it will take some time to get fully adjusted. Hope I helped a little! Keep practicing!
