Mounting & Balancing Tires On $16,000 Worth Of Wheels!

Yes you read that right! This client came in with his 60th Anniversary Lingenfelter Cunningham Corvette and wanted us to swap out the wheels for him. He told us they were carbon fiber and we knew that meant lots of money. We knew it was a ton of liability to take on this job. So what did we do? We took it in knowing we had the proper equipment and the perfect man for the job, Clayton. He knew the responsibility he was taking on but he performed well under the pressure and made it happen. This should help you with some tips and tricks on how to take care of those wheels and tires that you’re worried about damaging when they come to the shop. Please make sure you have the right equipment and experience before taking on such a liability. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

I wish Discount Tire had been 10% as careful with my Niche wheels. But no, they savage my wheels, initially offered to pay for the fix, then declined when they got the estimate. So much for being a loyal customer for well over a decade.

Great stuff! Personally I stay away from anything below a 40 series for obvious reasons. Great to see how other people also take such good care of their customers, although I usually check the "fine-tuning" after I balance the wheel initially.

The shop i work at before relocating, our old tire machines would almost always leave some type of marks or scratches on the wheels. So anytime I got a vehicle with very nice/expensive wheels that needed the use of one of the machines, I simply told them I wouldn't do it because it will definitely damage the paint on the wheels. Luckily we got new machines now.

I worked for Ford and refused to do tires because our machines were so poorly maintained and damaged that they would invetivably cause damage to either the rim or tire but often times both

I have visited hundreds, probably thousands of garages in the UK over 32 years supplying and training on high end Oscilliscope, Diag, 3D Geometry, Tyre equipment, AC etc, I've only met a very small few that are near to your standard. Awesome work guys and keep up the fantastic content! Do you ever use the tyre matching/optimisation program on that hunter machine? (not saying it was justified here for such small weight but a really useful program to eliminate weights on premium jobs)

Thanks! Yes, use it when necessary but we do charge for that since it takes extra time to move the tire and recheck.

Haha that tire machine brings back memories for me. Guys would set a block of steel on the foot pedal and have it change the tire automatically while they work on the 2nd tire on another machine. I'd say there's about a 5% chance the machine will get stuck and possibly rip off a sensor.

great vid! always so curious about how this process works. it's just the air going in that seats the bead? seems crazy to me. and holy guacamole, $4k a wheel, four times as much as I paid for my four wheels lol and those wheels definitely have a unique style

That hunter tire changer is killer I fought my shop to get one (tooth and nail), threatened to leave if I didn’t get one. It a must have for all these low profile tire and rim setups. After showering my the boss how much money was lost from scratching rims with the old chop stick machine he understood the reason. Yes it’s expensive, but rim repair is more expensive. Techs do need extra training and understanding to operate it because you cannot force the machine like the old style. I still like the old machine for economy tires. This one is bullet proof and worth the investment.
