The sound is not the best but the tips are excellent! I will keep them in mind for my trip in the Himalayas in March! I was instinctively going to bring 1 wide fast prime and a telephoto.

Great advice about using a telephoto lens. Most people roll their eyes or ignore me when asking "what lens should I bring".

I've been hiking all over Australia, France and travelled to Scandinavia, Canada & the US. Granted, I only do day hikes, some quite serious (8-9h, 1500 m elevation gain) but I carry only 1 of the 10 "essentials" on that list (food/water). A GPS on my phone is enough, the rest is my camera, a jacket, and essentials for the mountain that aren't even on this list : crampons, hiking poles, waterproof jacket, gloves, beanie, anti-chafing cream. I'd bring those Rei 10 essentials on an off track hike in Alaska for example, but for a day hike in Yosemite, the French Alps, Tasmania, or New Zealand ? Not really. The knife is good for salami cutting, useless in a fight against wildlife, where your hiking poles are more useful (especially for snakes). I agree with your tips though. In the Alps, good light on a peak may not happen until 10 am. In winter, it may not happen at all, especially on glaciers, which are often on areas in full shade in winter. For the accessible gear, I'm an amateur so I just have a bridge camera (Panasonic FZ200) which I always have around my neck when hiking. And yeah I fully agree, don't be afraid to include humans, tents and walking tracks to your images. Just a picture of a peak is boring. You need good foreground, a subject, good light... There is a difference between a real photo and just a travel memento.

Lovely video . I frequently go for hikes and carrying a DSLR is too cumbersome. In August I ll be going for one with my newly bought DSLR. Please guide me how to safely carry it for a 8day long hike with a bag pack ~8…10kilos on the Himalayas I have Nikon D5600 with 18-55 and 70-300 mm lens. Thank you

Thanks, Cathryn, and welcome to the wonderful world that is landscape photography! The Rockies share many of the same conditions with the Cascades so I'm glad it could help. Hope to have some more videos up soon. Something else that I spend a lot of time thinking about is how to turn personal inspiration and perspective into successful and creative compositions. If that's something you think you would like to learn more about, I just wrote an article here: jameslorentson.com/journal/2017/10/24/creative-composition-in-landscape-photography-seeing-photographically-part-3 Happy shooting!

Thanks for some good tips! What's your pack list like/what do you use to pack all your gear lightly? Also, what harness are you using to attach the camera to your chest? Maybe a separate video to show this would be helpful :)

Great questions, I do plan to share a video with some information on how I pack and carry gear efficiently. The chest harness is made by Cotton Carrier: amzn.to/2iIjWYu It distributes the weigh nicely.

Great info. I'm hauling off to an Everest Base Camp Trek shortly. I generally do not have a focus on landscapes during my travels but in this case I want to be more prepared. I am seriously weight conscious since its my back carrying the weight for the 17 day trek. If you were to take one wide angle lens with you -- which would it be? 16-35 f4, 16-35 f2.8, 12-24 F4 or other? I have a Sony A7RIII. Last, and I know this is a nutty question, but if you looked at your Lightroom stats, which focal length do you think you use most when in mountains?

  • @JamesLPhoto

That sounds amazing! I would take the 16-35 f4. Sure, there may be times when you want wider, but those are also times when you would use a tripod to get closer, which you probably won't be doing a lot of since you'll be moving through the landscape so much. I'm on Nikon and if I was doing that trek I would take 16-35 f4 and 28-300.

#3 is not always a good idea, I usually have my camera accessible, unless I'm hiking. I fell down the side of a mountain a few weeks back, luckily, except for my tripod everything was inside my rucksack for a change and did not get damaged. If I' would have had it on my chest, I'd be looking into buying a new camera and lens right about now.

That depends on the nature of the hike indeed. Other than that, great hints - I'm a beginner, and I never knew about photo ephemeris (it's awesome :D)
