This is one of the most interesting new entrants to running shoe business (along with TYR Valkrie Speedworks and Elite) this year and as a Hong Kong business, instead of just copying out other models, they seem to have put some thought to their shoe design and architecture which makes them pretty unique. I wish you had also said yes to R1, maybe it is not too late to ask them to send you a pair. R1 has a dual lacing system and they have done away much of the outsole rubber and it is not also not a maxed up shoe. Ultra athlete named Justin Montague covered 854 miles in 146 Hr and 44 mins using one pair of Mount to coast R1 (in the JOGLE ultra - from John O’Groats to Land’s End in UK) At a digestible price it is an interesting shoe to try even if you are not a ultra runner. Someone training for marathons could use R1 for long runs and racing as well. I heard that they will come up with R1R, basically a variant of R1 for trail ultra races. Before your exploded view of the shoe, I thought the zero-sag was the black piece (rubber) that is visible under the shoe. It follows the zero-sag insert in the shoe. Maybe it is a combination of both functionally. It is said to be manufactured by German BASF for MtC. I will probably going to get a pair from this company sometime. Last couple of years, I have accumulated a bit of a collection now and have to retire some shoes.

M2C has another version of the R1 coming out at some point, with a rubber outsole...I'm more curious about that, we will see. As it stands now, I have alot more time I want to put into the S1. I want to get the shoe well over 400k to do my longtern review in it.

I am now curious about the R1 after running in the S1. However, I have alot of time to put into the S1 as I want to get it over 400k so I can really come back and discuss it in detail after that time. M2C has a variant of the R1 coming out with a rubber outsole, called the R1R, I'm more curious about that one... stay tuned.

I’ve been intrigued by this one, also as a road runner. I wish one of the major U.S. retailers sold it with a better return policy in case it doesn’t work for me.

@@SagasuRunning When you said it was like a lower Superblast, my eyes just widened so much. With similar specs, how would you compare it to your beloved Supernova Rise? Also, would you purchase the same size? I’ve purchased two shoes directly because of your accolade (Adios 8 and Supernova Rise) and that makes what was already a tempting shoe even more tempting.

@elliotendures I need more time in the S1 to really compare it to the SNR…. But they do very similar things but in very different ways. I went TTS, same since US9, in the A8, SNR and S1…. No issues across the board.

Been eyeing this shoe for a while and surprised to learn its actually from HK (where I'm based) and doesn't ship here! The bumper reminds me of Tyr Speedworks (another new entry which also has very similar aesthetics), which gave me bad runner's toenails (from the toenail hitting the hardened bumper piece). Any similar experience from this one? Also, believe in the run says their R1 has clicking sound from the black patch on the outsole, does this one have the same issue?

  • @SagasuRunning

As with all new brands, establishing logistic takes time, even at home. I definitely see the aesthetics similarities to TYR, as well as some of On's recent design language. That being said the aesthetics for M2C seem to have come from the function of the shoe too, they really are well done. I'm very sensitive to toenail trauma (I have a history of it from a few shoes) and can report that these gave me no issues nor concerns. The toe bumper on this one really does work well. I noticed not odd sounds or clicking from these in the wet or dry.

When I first heard of these I immediately wondered if they'd be a good long run shoe for marathon training. Perhaps even to race in for shall we say "less than elite" runners. Seems like they could be.

Can't say had heard of these which I guess is partly why they wanted to get them out to a wider audience. Seems US only distribution at the moment though so that is going to restrict interest. Had a look at the specs and did find it a bit odd to say the "fastest" pace they are designed for is 8 min mile. It seems almost "traditional" to say a "daily trainer" can "pick up the pace"! It would appear they can't although you seem to suggest you could. Also a narrative of being designed for ultras is also an interesting if risky take IMHO. I know about as much as ultra racing as you do (i.e. none) but that I have observed is that it is actually rare for ultra runners (at least non elites) to go past an ultra in training and most of the time the training looks quite similar to a regular marathoner so wasn't overly sure what these would offer any other trainer used these days.

The paces don't surprise me that much. It makes sense given the realities of ultra training. I occasionally run with someone here in Taiwan who does backyard ultra format endurance racing. Usually something like 5-6k per hour until last man standing (the last backyard ultra I watched here in Taipei, in this format, went on for about 45 hours)... anyway....the paces he told me he typically runs are as slow as he can run to give himself about 30mins per hour of rest. So if the hourly running is 5k, thats around 6:00/km. There is also alot of 100 & 200k ultra racing here in Taiwan, most of it trail but almost all of the races have long road sections. Often for those one is running a similar pace. Road ultra is a different world....

@@SagasuRunning yeah realise very few would be going faster than 5 min/km pace (or 8 min/mile) in an actual ultra. It was more that this is about my rough easyish pace for say up to an hour. If so then I would be sort of thinking is this the shoe that for sort of easy run or not...

BYU is one 6.7km loop every hour, typically on a trail course. It sounds easy but it’s not. It becomes increasingly difficult and maybe even more of a mental than physical challenge.

@@SagasuRunning yeah I just think of that Salomon Spectur where saying a shoe is just targetted at slower runners (or slower running) not sure is a great idea marketing wise.
