One thing I've not seen or read is that the door chime on these cars had another option, yes you can change the door chime. If you have one of these cars and don't know about it. Look under the drivers seat. There's a small metal box with a switch, the switch has 2 positions.

I was 11 yrs old and very much into cars when My parents brought home a candy apple red 83 starion. First one in our small rural ATL suburb. My brothers and I were awe struck. I had forgotten the door jingle until I saw this. Wow blast from the past. The car stayed with us for years being very reliable. It then became my oldest brothers car when he graduated high school in 1988 it got him thru all 4 yrs at UGA but then was totaled in about 1993 when a lady ran a red in ATL and he t boned her. No serious injuries. But that was the end of the starion. I bet it would be worth some serious coin today if still in good condition. Thx MW for this one!

I remember the first time (and possibly the only time) I saw one of these in person. I was looking for a first car with my dad and we stopped at a gas station in the car we were test driving to switch drivers (we both test drove every automatic we looked at, I couldn't drive stick back then) and parked next to one. It was a red one, and it was beautiful. Definitely a car I'd buy one day if I could find one.

I was riding in my friend's '79 Z28 sometime around 1988. It was late at night and there was hardly anyone else on the highway. A Starion flew by us. My friend and I freaked because it came out of nowhere. He nailed the gas and I thought for sure we would catch him. The tail lights disappeared around a gentle bend in the highway never to be seen again. The top speed of a 1987 Starion was around 125. Salt n Peppa never pushed it so hard.

Wow. I do not even remember seeing many of these in the 1980s which is too bad. Looks like one of the nicest vehicles they have ever made. Also never knew they had ABS brakes. That was a year before Mercedes offered them. Early 70s Lincolns, Cadillacs and Imperials had them, but was gone by the late 70s for some reason, only coming back around 1990 on those.

Right, it wasn't THE fastest car off the line, but going from 30 to 70 mph was quick because that turbo boost had a chance to kick in. I had the 1985 model. I'd keep it in 2nd gear from about 30-50, then quickly switch to 3rd and it was at 70 mph in no time. I don't recall actually timing it, but it sure felt fast. I once took mine to 134 mph on a remote stretch of I-25 in New Mexico, and the only thing that really scared me was the prospect of jail time. It was a nice stable ride.

Mine was a prototype and after putting Splitfire plugs in it it was way faster than that car. 0 to 70 in 7 seconds. In Florida the dealer had to make the turbo bearing both water cooled and oil cooled. That might have affected the spooling of the turbo in a favourable way. The dealer described those engines as a race ready caravan motor.

Starion is just Stallion, but with the L replaced with R since Japanese language doesn't have R, and they translated words with L in it to Rs.

I never see them anymore. They probably rusted away like most 80's cars. They were pretty cool.

+Burt Sampson There's a few here and there, but aqua's pretty much right. Most are either rusted and burnt out, or worse...riced out. Any that are relatively original and in good shape cost big $$$.

+Burt Sampson Not many. They were very susceptible to rust. I had a 1989 Conquest, and by 1997 the rocker panels were already rusted all the way through. I looked around for one in 2005 or so just out of curiosity, and a good clean specimen was very difficult to find. Most of the ones for sale were advertised as rollers and/or donor cars to keep the few decently running ones on the road. If you want one today, you'll just about need to buy 'em two or three at a time to cobble one decent one together out of the two or three. The good news is nobody considers them "desirable collector cars" or whatever so they're still fairly cheap.

Starion didn't have a rack and pinion as far as I know. Our 89 Conquest TSI still has a steering box.

This was a great looking car and got even better in 1986. What as that gibberish about the name being computer generated? Mitsubishi says "Starion" is a contraction of "Star of Arion" - and refers to both a star and the mythical horse, Arion.

Very Datsun Z car looking..I think Japanese people really do make their l's sound like r's ..so rumor has it that it was supposed to have been called stallion , and the mustang and other American pony cars may have been the influence for the name

MafiosoItaliano458 It was named after a mythical horse called Arion, like other Mitsubishi's at the time, but using a play on words "Star of Orion". You were close!!

Really?? Wow!! ''Star of Orion''! Very cool! :-D Also, I should've imagined the names you said! ''Arion'' and ''Star of Orion''! Because I come from their country of origin! Haha! ;-P But I can't recall Mitsubishi names from greek mythology!! I remember many Mitsubishi cars being named after space or aircrafts! ''Lancer'', ''Space Wagon'', ''Mirage'', ''Stealth'' (Dodge, yeah, but with Mitsubishi tech!), ''Laser'' (again, despite being a Plymouth!) and ''Eclipse'', which, now that I rethink of it, combines both themes!
