+Ji Fay Jeep Renegade is actually considered a "sub-compact" They compete with the Chevy Trax/ Buick Encore, Subaru XV Crosstek, and Nissan Juke. The newly redesigned Hyundai Tucson had not come out yet. Kia Sportage will get their redesign for the 2017 model year.

The reason why the Forester's ride quality is terrible is because of the OEM Yokohama Geolandar G91F tires are hard. For 17" Forester rims, the Yokohama AT-S tires do a better job on-road and off-road than the OEMs.

Here's how I think it should have been Cr-v: great at everything except a few interior plastics Equinox- very outdated but still wonderful at Bluetooth connectivity and ride RAV4 -reliable with lots of room and space, quiet ride, but styling not stunning to look at Forester: great off-road, lots of room, awd, but materials a step behind everyone else, especially the radio controls Rouge: lots of equipment for the least expensive car of the lot, but very noisy cvt transmission, and not fun to drive Cx5: zoom zoom fun, very comfortable interior, but the ride is a tad firm and rough Terrain: very usable back seat which slides, but is outdated like Equinox, and I'd like to see it like an Acadia exterior style and not truckish like the old Honda Pilot was.

manthony225 You'd think Ford would have the Escape for comparison. And the Tucson and Sportage would be in the competition. But maybe it didn't meet MotorWeek's and Cars.com's price platform. In regards of the Equinox and Terrain, the tech is there, but the exteriors seems a little dated (thus, a refresh for next model year). You'd think Subaru's Forester would do well, but the knock on it --> their infotainment system is less to be desired, but the new Starlink infotainment system that's in the Outback and Legacy will come in next model year (oh, it's also in its compact Impreza and XV Crosstrek). Remember, this is a unique comparison test. Still, if you're in the market for any of these vehicles, test drive them all! You may think the Mazda CX-5 maybe better than the Honda CR-V. Also, don't just think about the driver, think about the passengers as well.

manthony225 They were testing the cheaper 2.0 version of the Mazda. The 2.5 liter engine makes a world of difference and comes with a lot more features (nav, leather, auto A/C, auto wipers and headlights etc.).

John Edmond The CX-5 rides horribly. The Forester is a great choice, its a shame that this review seems so biased against it. Subaru's AWD system is eons above everyone else and it's standard across the board.

  • @BicycleCrossroads

What good is the infotainment system to an SUV if you're stuck in snow without AWD? Stupid comparison. Bang for the buck, the Forester would win. Buying AWD as an option for any of these cars would result in a car way over the $29k threshold. Dumb comparison.

Not exactly a fair comparison if only two have AWD. If you wanted the same dollar amount value all should have been compared with their AWD/4WD models. In my opinion any SUV without AWD is just an overglorified raised Station Wagon. Right? Where is the U in Utility when your SUV is stuck in the snow? Stupid test of SUVs. Test all models AGAIN in snow and see which one you pick then for $29k. Extremely disappointed in Motorweek for lowering standards to see which SUV is the best raised station wagon rather than which SUV has the best U in Utility. Shame on you guys.

Lol at all you ignorants talking about GM must have paid them lots of money to get the Nox and Terrain up there. Get real guys! If it's like that, then I can say Honda must of paid them millions in order to get the CR-V first place since CR-V isn't that great either.

This test is a joke and so is cars.com! How did the Chevrolet and GMC score that high? Horrible engines and transmissions that can hardly get them out of their own way, poor mpg, cheap dated interiors. The Subaru and Mazda, both which either win or score at the top of everyone else's tests score in last place. While the Chevrolet and GMC which usually finish near the bottom in everyone else's test score near the top. Please!

This is clearly the gathering of the only press vehicles available at the time of shooting. Ford or Hyundai/Kia no where to be seen. Either get true comparison models across the board or don't shoot the piece. Poor journalism. GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox are in the top 3? Not by any other professional tester/reviewer I've read or viewed. These GM platforms are quite dated when compared to the rest in this group. Truly an awful review.
