Motorola TLKR T80 Extreme - 10km Range Test

A line of sight signal test of the Motorola PMR446 walkie talkies. Do they work at the maximum 10km range stated in the specs?
• Buy T92 on Amazon: geni.us/motot92
• Buy T82 on Amazon: geni.us/motot82
We filmed this test up on the Wirral Peninsula in North West UK and performed the test across the River Dee to Holywell in North Wales...a distance of almost precisely 10km.
The T80 Extreme devices were running on fully charged Ni-MH batteries and are unmodified in any way so were outputting 0.5 watts which is the maximum allowed unlicensed for this type of radio under UK law.
Thanks for watching and please let us know if you enjoyed the video.

Would you say they work for around 6km from a Village to the edge of a City? I thought about ordering 4 of these just cuz shits n giggles. Also, can 4 of them work on the same channel at once?

Use a tool like this kzread.info/dash/bejne/m3-n0cqHZ73YaaQ.html to check if you have a clear line of sight. If you do, you should be OK. If there's anything in the way, you'll be unlikely to achieve 6km. Yes, they can all use the same channel but obviously, only one person can be transmitting at once in this type of simplex arrangement. Appreciate this comment is a month old so let us know how it goes or went.

Great review. I just purchased the Motorola T600. Prior to that, I had the Motorola MS350R. Which by the way still work great. Motorola two way radios have never let me down. And.... you just reassured me of the range aspects. Ty for going to these lengths to test the range.

Amazing. I’ve bought two Baofengs 3(!) watt walkietalkies and they stop receiving when farther than about one kilometer. Now I’ve got a hold on a Quad Pack of these T80’s hoping they would perform better. Thanks for showing that these Motorolas actually do their job better with only one sixth of the power! 😎

I so greatly appreciate this video, and it's a point I so often try making about these fabulous little radios. They're marvelous when used within their limits and properly. People often expect too much, like the 16 mile (or more) range in an urban environment. We done sir. And for the record, as a boy I lived on Church Street in the village Meysey Hampton in the early 1960's when my father was stationed at RAF Fairford while serving in the US Air Force. Loved my time there and the English Countryside. The scenes in your videos brings me back. Best wishes, and be safe.

Thanks Thomas. Yes, the range is greatly reduced but in my general use and experience of these, I continue to be impressed at how well they do. If I had to estimate (though it's impossible to say) I would say... BUILT UP / URBAN - 1km OPEN TERRAIN / WALKING - 5km LINE OF SIGHT - 10km+ We're planning to do a 17km test soon...just for fun :-)

Hello. I have a pair of these which I bought last year after, among other sources of information, watching the previous video mentioned at the start of this one, and if I were to buy now I would go with the more recent Motorola T82, as those follow the more recent 16 channel plan for PMR446 analog and also have USB charging. But that is with the expectation that they are about the same quality and performance as the older T80's I've got. Whatever you buy have fun with them.

Personally with that device I have a DX record of over 120 Km from Monte Musinè (Turin, Italy) to Punta di Mezzo (Varese, Italy) in optical range. On the Alps (especially Monte Rosa group of mountains) it's quite usual for me to connect people in the Pianura Padana, more than 50 Km away. And the modulation of T80 is one of the best of PMR devices, in my experience.

  • @tdcattech

Nothing specific. We used PMR CH01 and a Motorola 'sub-channel' of 47 which in normal radio terms is a digital-coded squelch (DCS) of 054. In reality, we probably should have chosen something like CH06 or CH07 as these are generally less used than lower channel numbers.

It is an odd design choice but when using them, they are always on the clip on my belt, pocket etc. so I don't really notice this problem in reality. I swapped out the NiMH packs and put in high capacity cells. It's a pain because you lose the ability to easily charge but the life of batteries is vastly better. Swings and roundabouts I guess. Enjoy!

Very good sensitivity and demodulation, super super cheap, very durable, good housing. However, such a great range and height is the result of height. In a straight line, close to the ground, even with direct visibility, it would not succeed. Because the earth absorbs electromagnetic waves and the wave also propagates vertically and the part absorbed by the earth is re-reproduced from the horizontal beam which quickly exhausts. UHF is a very good band for the maximum range, for VHF or HF the results would be worse, eg the 27 Mhz band has many times higher grounding attenuation because the main (horizontal) wave is radiated too close to the ground in relation to its geometric size and is almost immediately absorbed in its entirety.

These look like a nice option which I'd love to try for a few reasons. 1. The antenna looks a more appropriate length which may mean slightly better gain / performance...though the stated power of Motorola devices is the ERP so it may only lead to longer battery life. 2. Batteries are AA not AAA as the T80!! Much much better in every way! They're still only 500mW from what I can see which makes the 35 miles quite a claim. Let us all know how you get on.

Thank you for an excellent report. You can do much more than this. A few years ago, Greater Manchester RAYNET members on Winter Hill linked up with Derbyshire RAYNET in the Peak District, using Icom PMR 446 sets, a distance of just over 30 miles, or about 48km. Signals were very clear both ways. I believe the Yanks have done about 75 miles, or 120km, in the Rockies no doubt. It's amazing how far this frequency will propagate, given a clear line of sight. It's much reduced in the urban environment of course. If there's a tropospheric "lift" on, and you're in the boundary layer, you might hear Ireland or Scotland. Just below the peak of a slope is the best place to be. Vy 73 from G4FSN

@@tdcattech Hi there. This video from Knoxieman explains it, but all he says is that 330 miles is "a record" and that it was attained handset to handset. No mention of WHICH handset, or freak weather conditions which can extend the range considerably. Ham radio users used to run a "million miles per watt" club to see how far they could get on one Watt. If I remember right a transatlantic convo was noted from Britain. On CB I noted several "openings" where users in the N. of England and Scotland were actually stronger than locals here in Somerset. "Tropospheric Ducting" often the main cause of extreme long range. inconclusive test. Normal everyday test around Town is needed. Alot of Walkie Talkie's will go the full distance advertised as long as you have clear line of sight. Do a every day test in a built up area then we will really see how good they are.

PMR with such power is capable to make 100Km easily but with direct sight line without any hills/summit...its not suprising that it works on that flat area above the sea level... Last time i was on hiking trip i made 80km from summit to summit ... but of course motorola is much more better solution then any baofengs.

Do you mean 50km or 10km? Even with a great take off / view like this, I'd be surprised if they would achieve 50km. Urban coverage is a different story. In my experience it's about 1km...maybe a little more. We may try that out in the future.

Welcome to the world of RF :-) ... we were testing a line of sight scenario here with an elevated take off location to see if the quoted 10km was possible...which it is. Unfortunately, this unit is only 0.5W through a basic antenna. Walk 50m with a few solid buildings and you could struggle. These usually work great in open outdoors and in medium business environments.

Not legally. It's much easier with brands like Retevis as they offer a 'High Power' option in their programming software (2W). This is, of course, illegal to use and will eat your battery but it might improve things a bit. In reality though, unless you can get a line of sight, you're stuck.

Hight is might and nothing in the way. Had original Motorola TA200. early PMR. 1999. £167 or so for a pair, Not rechargable, drop in charger, Just 3 x AA a piece. I know it would work. Now Superman could have done it in 10km 😀 My radios on a profile linked in banner photo or "about". The old motorola ones are in there. Aston Rowant nature reserve. photo in radio profile.

As a plumber, it saves a whole lot of shouting such meaningful phrases as "turn it OFF, OFF, FFS" from the loft space, or words to that effect to my colleague at the outside stop-tap, or to check which radiators are heating up in large property, not used the earpieces that came with them in the box (voice operated?) . Pleased with them for the price, the max range I have tried them at is just 0.5km with plenty of tree and buildings in the way, and words were audible , (I'm from Norfolk, so struggle with english....)

The test should be done somewhere in mountain or even forest. Open front and having water between is not really accurate from my point of view. Anyway great job guys, appreciate effort !
