Motorhome Mods : Gas options for travelling in Europe

We've been considering more off grid stops in Europe so will be using more gas as the fridge, hot water, cooking etc all run on gas if there is no EHU.
In this film we are showing you the options we have chosen for our first 2023 European trip for 6 weeks in our 2021 A Class Mobilvetta K-Yacht 79 - we've got some adaptors for the fitted UK pigtail in our gas locker.
It was a cost effective way to start, until we know how much gas we get through during this Summer. After that we'll look again at whether this is the most economical way to do it or whether a Gaslow, Gasit or underslung refillable gas tank would be a cheaper long term option.
If you haven't got the money to invest in those systems this provides a cheaper alternative :))
Our thanks to Hamilton gas for their advice and guidance and they can be found here:

Hi. Just wondering why you chose this solution ( I am not suggesting you are wrong with this solution) just seems more complicated than going down the refillable route. Refilling in Europe fairly easy although I know this is £7-800 option as opposed to £30 of adaptors, you will though have to buy or rent a European suppliers bottle that will cost £100-£120 euros on top of £30-£40 for the gas. Surely 2-3 seasons of travel will be more than a break even point on the initial cost of a refillable system? I ask the question as a newbie motor homer needing to make the same choice for my first European adventure this year. I certainly bow down to your extensive experience here, something I definitely do not yet claim to have and wonder am I missing something that you have and I have not taken into account. Love the channel as you are both a delight to watch and your technical upgrade videos are some if not the best to view on KZread. Hopefully you have time between adventures to reply. Thanks Paul 👍

Hi Paul, Thank you very much for your feedback which is very much appreciated 😀 Yes an interesting conundrum and you’re right re the overall refillable costs. At present, our longest trip has been about 6 weeks - in summer or warm Europe, our 13 and 6kg combination has never run out, indeed far from it, albeit I didn’t know that when we started European travel. I told myself if we ran out I’d need an option (the cheapest to start with) hence the adaptors. As we have never got close to running out I’ve left it like that!! We are planning some longer Southern Europe trips and I want to do the Scandinavian loop, both of which might need more gas! A 13 kg propane deposit on Antargaz (very common across France) is currently 45€ (about £39) so I’m still going to take the risk and save the refillable installation money. The gas price for 13kgs is about 40€ at the mo - sometimes more sometimes less depending on source. if I have to stow an empty UK one it’ll go in the moho garage 😀 Hope that sheds some more light on the decision making :)) 🚌 Thanks again Paul 👍🚌

Thanks for the vid. Interested to know how you got on in France with using the adapter to attach to a different gas bottle? Any videos of the switchover would be really helpful. thanks

Many thanks Charlotte and as yet we haven’t had to make a switch as our 11kg and 6kg haven’t run out on a trip !! If they do of course I will capture some footage. Sorry I couldn’t help further and thank you for watching 🚌😀☀️ (I did do a dry run here to just swap the fittings with out the French gas bottle and that was fine 😀)

So I see in the comments that you didn’t come close to using 19kg of gas over your 6 weeks but wondered how much you did use and what that went on; for example, daily showers, dishes, heating, cooking? I ask as I am mid conversion on a campervan and will be doing 3-5 week trips in Europe with 3 people total and need to guesstimate what size install I need to consider. Like the adapter route as I think it will ultimately be cheaper and as you say a back up. Thanks in advance for reply and for the video.

@Tombould Morning Tom, Many thanks for watching and I’d love to do a project like that now that I’ve found the moho world!! On our final episode of Wales to the Med by Motorhome -Ep. 19 I actually changed the 6kg over to the big one. So that was 2 days short of 6 weeks for that 6kg bottle. BBQ’ing, fridge and cooking when off grid (fridge on low one or two setting) and when hooked up we often used the gas burners cooking in addition to the single induction. No heating requirement for that trip. I use the Eco setting on our Truma Combi 6E for water heat which is plenty warm enough (as opposed to ‘High’). I was very surprised it lasted that long so with the 13kg as the back up that would make about 15-18 weeks worth in no heating temperatures of European Summer/early Autumn Hope that helps and as yet I haven’t needed the French/European adapters on any trip!! Good luck with the build and send a photo or two when you’re done. If you need any more just shout. 😀🚌🎉

Thanks so much for the detailed response. On this note I’ll likely install a 9-13kg system. Thinking Gaslow fill point but whether or not I go through with the rest of that install system for now will be dependant on budget at hand at that point I guess. Just seems logical at this point of the build. In terms of the keeping you posted I might have to bite the bullet and form a KZread channel; I’ll let you know 🤔. Thanks again

Problem with that is you then may have Spanish and French bottles I went down the safefill route and have a 6kg Uk one and a larger safefill with adaptors for most EU countries- I guess both your solution and mine do the job at the end of the day 😎

Yes I would potentially have one French (Antargaz) one to keep for visiting France - most years to be fair. Safe fill or similar might be plan B 😁. It’ll be interesting to see how the 19kgs total lasts for this 6 week break ☀️☀️

Will be watching your usage with interest, as we are having our first motorhome delivered in September. No idea how much gas we need. We are currently in France in our caravan but use sites with hook up, so use very little gas. I was considering a SafeFill system have you considered this? Interesting.

Hi Kevin and thanks for watching 😁 I have looked at those options but at the moment I’m going to start at the bottom with a £30 to £40 solution as I do think it will work, accepting that bottled gas ( GB or French) is probably more expensive than refillable but if this works ok then it avoids that much more significant initial investment. Antargaz is very easy to acquire in France as you may know already 😁 🤞 I’ll be posting gas progress in the films we do of the 6 weeks ! 😁

We don't have refill problems down here in W Wales for some reason - probably because we're at the end of the earth :) I wish I could fit 2 x 13 in the van but probably a bit heavy if they did fit!! :)
