Motorcyclist chases scooter thieves in London

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I'll leave all comments from now on. partly because I wasn't sure why I was reporting them. There's a community, and guidelines, but I'm not here to snitch. Plus is against my worldview. I guess I just felt leaving them was condoning them.
Plus, I realised, they're snitching on themselves. And it will bee easy, years hence, for their grandchildren to link their accounts, via usernames or login times or common misspellings and phrases. Hoping to find an interesting story, that they were a hacker or started the rebellion, or was shagging around on gramma "oh, nope, gramps was just a weird angry racist who couldn't spell for shit".
Responses to your most common comments:
-Yes, the guy on the bicycles was with him. That's what tipped me off. We're both very perceptive aren't we.
-No, you cannot perform a citizens arrest on someone for riding two bicycles. Even if you're pretty sure someone near them is committing a crime.
-Yes, I could've knocked him off and risked my own safety, risked losing my brand new GS 1200 (as I'd then be outnumbered and standing next to a £10,000 motorcycle with its keys in it), and potentially a criminal charge if I was wrong and he was legally in possession of it just riding it like a dickwad.
-"I would've done X" Wow. I believe you. That's impressive. Aren't you tough. Here's a cookie. I hope you have a good lawyer.
-"Oh look he's Muslim/Non-white." Oh look you're a fucking idiot.
Still not sure if I was silly or a sissy. Definitely something that started with si and ended in y. Figured that with a bit of footage of the chap's face the police might be able to do something.
And again. I'm really sorry about the awful sound.

In Germany we have laws that allows people to break the law in order to protect someones property or to stop someone doing illegal things. For example you catch someone spraying and you hold him while that you break his jacket, he won't be able to press charges for the jacket, also you can run a red light but if an accident occurs you'll be fully liable

Yeah and I believe there's proportionality. You can hold him and tear his jacket, but you're not allowed to tear off his ear. I was more thinking what happens if they crash and die.

my opinion is: Is it your fault that they stole the scooter and are shitty drivers? You just try to protect a citizen's property which someoneelse is not respecting (the property of other people)

My opinion is that these kids need help. They need to be able to conceive of success beyond a stolen scooter, and the inevitability of becoming a thug. Some way they can reliably make something of themselves - with hard work, and the scooter-stealing will become a thing of the past. It's a cost benefit analysis. The benefit is that it's fun as hell (I imagine), pays out cash kudos, and most importantly: It's unlikely they'll get caught and punished. So it's attractive. The cost, is getting caught, or crashing. As a motorcyclist I can tell you we don't do this to not crash. So the cost of getting caught needs to be scary. But if many of your friends have criminal records, and everyone you know does shitty, dead end, minimum wage jobs... Why not nick a scooter? But if you wanted to become a lawyer, and that was possible, and it was more likely you'd get caught and precluded from practising law. Do not nick a scooter. We need to attack it both ways - address the societal forces that make kids nick scooters in the UK, and more reliably catch and punish them when they do. And see to it that punishment doesn't further disadvantage them. This way we address both the cost and the benefit.

That's the same prick in Royal Jordanian's video. And in one submitted by Stephen Lovegrove. Come on Met Police. I'm in Australia and even from here I can identify the guy. Good clear picture of his face in this vid. May even be riding the same scooter without plates which I'm astonished he's flying under the radar.

  • @zak0321

"Even from here I can identify the guy", okay, I'm not having a go, just having a discussion: You have only seen his face but you haven't identified him, I bet more details than his face will be needed to build a case and file an arrest warrant against him. It's (sometimes unfortunately) not the wild west but a bureaucracy where everything has a million-and-one sheets of paper to go with it. That all takes time, time is money and no one has the money. Do they focus those resources on a couple of guys trying their luck on a scooter? The police have some tough decisions to make but someone has to make them. Again, not trying to shit on you or start an argument; I just want to say in defence of the Police, and especially frontline Constables, that it's not always up to them who they can go after, which really sucks for the average joe who just got their new scooter stolen. There's not much the police can do when it comes to people breaking locks and taking bikes. What else can they do to prevent this? The only thing I can think of is improve school systems to teach kids some manners and hopefully it would have some effect on poverty levels which would probably reduce crime like this. :(

Daniel J, that is a stupid and idealist, real life isn't like a movie. The rider did all he could. What use would there have been to going to jail for assault or going up against the two guys in the video? His life is more important than a scooter.

Daniel J I think that still counts as assault, you know what it's like over here. It's a shame this happened but he would be putting his own bike in jeopardy as well as breaking other laws (ie if he went on the pavement on his bike to take the guy down)

I really hope those douchebags were caught and the owner of the scooter had it returned to them.

Yes, definitely. Both of you. Except now you'd be standing in a street, next to your favourite possession, an expensive R1200GS motorcycle, holding a criminal by the throat. A criminal with a mate nearby. Criminals who specialize in bike theft. And I'm going to hold one of them and wait patiently for the police to arrive.

Good work, especially getting the good quality face photo. As motorcyclists, these scumbags are tainting what we love doing, normal people see these idiots riding like they do and assume they are the same as normal riders. Keep aware of this happening, always be aware of youngsters riding two up on a moped or several in convoy and apparently paying attention to parked cars and bikes.

+Bike Rambler (TheBabblingBiker) Don't have to :) I've got one of the cheap Bluetooth kit from eBay and there's an option if you press and hold the dial button for 3 seconds it dials the last number you've called. Before every ride dial emergency number and quickly disconnect, so it stays in device memory. Next time you see situation like this just hold the button and it connects you stright with cops ;-) BTW if that would be USA you've could just kick him off thescooter lol (just kidding) there's a clip on KZread with situation like that :P 'what happens when you steal homies bike' or something like that.

Saw a video of a biker going to a nearby police car on duty about a bike theft in progress and the police were like "meh" cause they can't really do much about it. No wonder the bike theft in London is getting worst cause the police don't give a flying fuck. It just boils my blood when I see this thieves getting their way and steal bikes even in broad daylight.
