As someone who lived in a big city then moved to a sprawling suburb I absolutely agree with this whole take. Being able to walk, bike, or take a short bus ride to run your errands is MILES better than having to drive a car everywhere. I finally landed a job that lets me take the subway into the city for work and it's way more pleasant. I was gonna buy another car, the wife still needs hers, but now that public transit has eased my commute I'm going out to get my first motorcycle. A royal enfield int650

From an urban planning perspective I'm curious about using motorcycles as a stop gap between car dependent and walkable cities. Many American cities are rendered unwalkable by the size of parking lots. Stores could be closer together, except you need an 8 by 12 slab of pavement per customer and space to move between those slabs. If you could assume a significantly percentage of those people will only need 1/3-1/4 of that space you can make the parking lot smaller and fill the freed up space with stuff that adds value (stores, restaurants, apartments, parks. Whatever) meaning there is more of value within walking or biking distance of any random point in a city so people can drive less and need less parking, until you get to some better equilibrium between asphalt and useful stuff.

You just can see top notch technology on cars, not on motorbike. And the most important thing about travel/transport/commute,... is SAFE, and I think we all know which one is the winner here. You can choose something for fast, for saving money, convenience,... but it means nothing if you take higher risk of accident. When you ride a motorbike, you cover the bike, but when you drive a car, the car cover you, just think about that. My opinion, I want both, car for my family trip or when the weather is bad, motorbike for myself when i dont need to take a long ride.

MPG has a lot of factors; engine size is a small one. I get around 60mpg with my HD Street Bob on my work commute. That's a 1900cc engine and a fairly heavy ride. I ride it light on the RPMs during my commute and it has plenty of low end power to keep the MPG low. During the winter I need to drive my truck, which I need to own for numerous reasons. I only get around 25mpg in that thing while staying between 1000-1500rpm. I much prefer the bike commute for many reasons. Fuel savings is just one of them.

Finally. Im getting a bike not be "cool". Theyre just more practical. I used to work construction and had a tiny Veloster hatchback loaded with tools. So many older guys had big beefy V8s to "haul" but had less than half my work schedule and less the half my tools "hauled". It made me realise how useless cars are. Outside of work, i didnt want to keep driving in traffic. I got 33mpg thanks to being catless and no muffler (lol) which helped a lot. I wanted a bike for self transportation and WAYYYYY easier parking. Im very into cars and cornering and loud engines, but fun and practical have a very solid line and people constantly want to mix them. Bike for practicality. And maybe an older car for necessity

I was looking up different things for motorcycles and wondered about the coefficient of drag of a bike and it turns out that something like a fully farred race bike with a rider in full tuck gets worse cd than a 90s chevy boxy suv. It gets much worse than that for large cruisers with riders that are sitting upright and that have bags on them as well. It is just something interesting that I encountered.

Motorcycles take a higher amount of skill, attention, and coordination to drive. Also, it requires one to be in some kinda shape. Lastly, you have to deal with the elements. Your average unaware, uncoordinated, inattentive slob, at best, doesn't want to deal with that, and, at worst, will die because they can't manage it. I've been to South East Asia multiple times and those countries are built around motorbiking. It's magical in an utterly bat shit crazy kind of way. Lane filtering, splitting, dynamic lane shifts all happen at a much greater and chaotic level. It's very normal there, but it is very cultural and quite frankly requires everyone to attune to a far greater level of situational awareness, coordination, that is much beyond the comprehension of your typical American driver. Motorbike countries are tons of fun and very convenient, but it would require a culture shift that most Americans would resist. Quite frankly it would never happen in the US.

I do own a bicycle though and i use that for when i dont need to travel that far. specially within the city . motor cycles aren't really the solution , they cant be used all the time not to mention when you have some stuff to bring with you EV cars are probably the best choice for now once the infrastructure are as good as the petrol stations and the chargers and batteries are better. after that its just a question of how clean can power plants get ideal future would be clean power plants - self sustaining or semi self sustaining houses in regards to electricity . and way better public transport. that way people would just use public transport or bicycles within the city. and only use Cars preferably EV when going out of city.

@@Greasy__Bear thank you sir. I think 80% of new cars are just dumb… unless you LS swap it 🤪 (also, your bike is twice as fast as my elky lol. Sub 5 seconds is something that I’ll need a lot more power and better gearing to do… plus I need a lot more weight on the back, my car is much better at burnouts and sliding around corners than 0-60 runs 😂)

I got my motorcycle license and i already own a car, i was about to sell it and buy myself a motorcycle, but here are the reasons why i didn't: I do surfing and it's pretty difficult to move my surfing board and all the necessary materials using a motorcycle, not to talk about my dogs. A car is pretty good to move around with the gang(my friends), lol and for dating hhhh 😂u know what i mean right?. And to be honest it's kinda dangerous to move around on a motorcycle, after a long enjoyable night, coming out on the middle of the night using a motorcycle is not that good of an idea, even parking a motorcycle cannot be safe, it can easily get stolen in ly country. In general, have both, im gonna buy a motorcycle to play around, but for now im thinking of upgrading my car. 🏄 That's it.

@yammienoob I quit driving bikes because of the dangerous factor, but let me finish. I quit because it was too dangerous and I thought that having a C8 corvette would source my needs for speed after I sold my 2019kX6R and 2017 GSXR. I wasnt even that much about the speed, I just want the acceleration... but now i have realized that... Cars are CLOSE to boring... i Love my C8 corvette not even tryin to cope in the slighetest... but driving any sport car will never par to a motorcycle to any degree.... (when that song/piece turns on, i'm a monster, thought i do it safely)... It has 1/10th the effect if you drive a car.

Right ahead of you, Yammie, with the bicycle view on things. In this age of environment and health -consciousness, over-congested cities (at least where I'm from) and increasingly ludicrously expensive gas, I'm that cyclist looking at the motorcycle as a possible solution to my longer distance interests. Well and a long held dream too, of course - that's gotta be at least part of it for one to get on one of those purported death machines. But I'm sure not planning on replacing my bicycle for around town business. Pretty sure this is gonna be a growing segment of the market with the economy and tastes for cycling going the way they seem to be at the moment (again - at least out here where I'm from).

I have been riding for 10yrs in all weathers and conditions however we are all fooled owing a motorcycle is actually more expensive if you consider that you will have to spend 2k - 3k on clothing, service intervals are a lot shorter compared to a car and regular chain maintenance which chain cleaner plus lube per a can is not cheaper. So....£5,000 for a motorcycle plus £2,000 - £5,000 for goretex textiles, leathers, goretex boots, goretex gloves, jeans, boots, summer gloves, summer boots, summer textiles and a helmet etc. Parking is free, no tolls and fuel economy us great and no waiting in traffic but.....having a driving licence will give you more job opportunities. Car is just cheaper to own.

Wanna downshift? Pull the clutch, press the gear lever down. Wanna upshift? Pull the clutch and tap the gear lever upwards. Lower gears will give you less speed at higher revs and therefore, more torque. The higher gears will give you more speed at lower revs and therefore less torque. Wanna accelerate? Get more torque. Wanna cruise? Get more speed at lower revs.

search for "preloading the shifter" tutorials, will make shifting way smoother, when you get multiple kilometers on your first bike then you can try blipping the throttle on downshifts, but on the meantime do't worry about it, just drop the revs enough so it doesn't yank the bike when you downshift
