Motorcycle Trail Tools: Beginner's Guide

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I go through all the tools I take with me on a dual sport or adventure rides, on the back of the Yamaha WR250R. It is a bit of a process coming up with what is worth taking and what is just useless weight. Hopefully this will help you put together your own trail tool kit. Whether you take the whole kitchen sink or just two tire irons, it is about what you comfortable riding with. Enjoy the adventure,
COS

    One tool I always take is a pair of medium size vice grips normally needle nose. I have used them for brake levers, shift levers even a throttle cable once. The throttle cable broke about two inches from the twist grip and I used the vice grips to hold the two pieces together, got me home.

    You have to bring what makes you feel safe enough to enjoy the ride. Thats going to be an individual preference. You seem to have a pretty good setup. I've been looking for a good tool roll myself and I really like that saw. Cheers.

    I can vouch for the metal epoxy and gaffer tape. Also, Luzianna is right on the money with vice grips! I never go anywhere without a small and medium pair - they are definitely worth their weight with many tricky problems. A couple of extra large cable ties can be lifesavers too and weigh nothing.

    Great video. I'm just building out my tool kit for the WR now too. Whilst not exactly tools, I carry spare gear and rear brake levers. Figure the barkbusters will save the others. How did you secure the pelican case to your rack? Just drill straight through or mount a plate on the inside? Keep the video coming!

  • @chroniclesofsolid

    @chroniclesofsolid

    7 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, Yer I just drilled straight through the case twice and mounted it directly to the threaded holes in the top rack that were already there for a Rotax mounting system. Used washers and lock nuts to keep it tight and water proof and put some foam between the rack and top rack to reduce vibes. Sounds a bit dinky but it has been rock solid through all my crashes and drops :)

    Which Pelican case did you attach to your rear rack? I like its low profile and large capacity. Do you think a 1 gallon roto-pax could fit on top?

  • @chroniclesofsolid

    Have you considered adding a compact chain breaker and a spare master link to your kit ? Or do you think the chance of breaking a chain or losing a master link clip, very unlikely ? I carry a very small Ballard chain breaker. To date I have never used it, but it does make me feel more comfortable, knowing it's there. I also carry a hack saw blade. I can wrap a bit of tape around one end for a handle or add one of those cheap plastic handles to one end of the blade. The bade can be shortened if it's a little to long to fit into a tool kit. Plenty of people ride without tools or enough tools. Some see them as a hassle to carry. Yet when problem's arise in the middle of nowhere, that can leave us stranded, I feel so grateful that I have the tools onboard to get me mobile again. More often, I seem to be saving they guys that don't carry tools.

    Hi Kevin, I do have a chain breaker (motion pro) but it is a heavy little bugger. So I generally only take it on adventure trips where we are too far away for a tow. But perhaps I should consider taking it on every ride. Hack saw blade is a good idea. Between my wire saw and the small saw on my Leatherman I don't need one, but that is a good and cheap lightweight option. Yer it is funny when someone will laugh at all the tools you carry, then 2hrs later when your tool saves their bacon they are your best friend :-P

  • @yorkchris10

    My kit is basically the same. I carry heavier guage 'hay' wire for exhaust repair. More from car experience scraping. Is that Motion Pro for tubeless? I carry at least one tubeless appropriate iron. On longer trips I carry two ratcheted tie-downs and anything extra to do a maintenance interval.

  • @chroniclesofsolid

    Heavier gauge wire is a good idea, might try and squeeze some in. I am not certain if it is specifically for tubeless setups, its the Motion Pro T-6 www.adventuremoto.com.au/mp08-0284-motion-pro-t-6-combo-lever-12-13mm and it is just easier to work with than the DRC ones.
