Motorcycle Seat Amnesia: Memory Foam Fail !

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When it comes to using memory foam, especially in motorcycle seats, there's a few things to consider when having a seat built by an upholsterer.
If you have an upholstery need, visit me at TridentCustomDesign.com
I serve the Tampa Bay area from Sarasota to Crystal River and accept motorcycle seat projects nationwide.

James knows seats. Gave me a free lesson by phone on what to use on my new Chinese ebike seat. The seats on these Chinese ebikes are like bricks. Even a seat supposedly made in Canada or the U.S. is made in China. Listen to this ebike review and you will learn something about the seat you get and what you really need. Even the glue is important. The light tack glue is important rather than what you would use to put two pieces of wood together. Glad I talked to him before I got the foam for my seat. Helpful guy. Thanks James.

  • @JamesBarnhart

The point of the information is that you only have a limited range of foam densities to work with, and memory foam does nothing to deal with energy absorption nomatter what weight is seated on the memory foam. Since a motorcycle seat is only 2-3 inches thick, you'll obviously be limited compared to what is available in automotive seats where the seat bottom foam can be 4-7 inches thick, allowing much more latitude in foam selection. I'm 220lbs and use 1 inch of #95 density, 1 inch of #55 density, and 1/2" of #30 density with a slot down the middle of the 30 for tailbone relief. If you're 250 lbs, you're going to be limited to trying 2 inches of #95 and 1 inch of 55 or 65, or some other combination of multi-density foam lamination. A full seat of memory foam is equivalent to a solid #100 + density top to bottom. The heavier you are, the less options you have for seat comfort when speaking of energy absorption. So that may explain why the information doesn't ring true for you. However, for those that are in the weight range that can be built to, using current foam technology, the results have been very positive.
