So many people say “MMI is a waste of time and money” but despite the bad reviews and everything I applied and I LOVE it!! Everyone saying that no ones hiring techs obviously haven’t been looking good enough, so many dealers are looking for MMI graduates and paying them 3000+ just to move and work for them. You can make so many friends from all over the country, I strongly recommend looking into it

To the 21 y.o. guy in Nursing school with two years 'till graduation.....STAY in nursing school! The medical field pays great money, you'll always have a job and MMI later on can easily be financed by a nursing career. Imagine this......you're six years out of nursing school, you are an experienced R.N., you relocate to Orlando and easily find a part time, VERY well paying R.N. job and begin school at MMI......Good luck my friend.

I would add, it looks so much better for future employers and schools/colleges if you have finished a course already, particularly a nursing course. Plus you can always return to nursing way down the line if you wish.

Agree with John here finish your nursing school get to work and then you can decide from there if it is really what you want to do. The biggest part of success is not the money you make(thats nice)but its going to work everyday loving what you do. Nothing is worse than getting up every day going to a job you hate.

@@jetdoctn exactly what I told my kids, my son is a lead mechanical engineer at his job overseeing 32 other engineers, he was designing n building things since out of diapers maybe before he is a natural at what he does, my daughter is a liscensed social worker n loves helping people. I would be just as proud if they worked in any skilled trades they had a passion in, or any other carreer I told them as kids to pick a job doing something u love and you will succeed, not about money, if you love what u do that stuff is priceless solid advice

I’ve been watching you and blockhead lately and I’ve been really thinking about going to mmi for the last 8 months and I was just wondering if the 42 weeks is enough time for one who may know absolutely nothing about bikes and a tiny bit about tools to learn and pass the the course? Hey John, question. I have to store my 2008 Dyna superglide for a year. It will be crated up and in a storage facility. My job takes me else where and I have no choice to store it. If I could I’d store it a harley dealer in Tampa or where my wife will be while I’m gone. So what should I do to the bike? Drain the fuel, engine oil completely? Disconnect/remove the battery? Drain the brake fluid? Any help would be greatly appreciated. You rock brother keep it up!

My exposure to MMI (Orlando) is visiting a few times and paying for half the Harley course. Seems like that should get me some sort of MMI honorary status. Or one of those bumper stickers.. "My Son and My Money Went To MMI". It gave him a career though so.. no complaints.

"Well, I knew they had 2 wheels HA HAA!" I can fully agree with your statement about know-it-all's. The one thing I have noticed working with people from schools like wyotech and UTI is that they do tend to be overly confident and not ask questions. I've seen guys turned down from jobs because they ask too much pay with very little real world experience. Pro tip, just start working after school and take a little less to begin with. When your work shows your worth, most employers see that and will give you that better pay. If they dont, you have tangible job history and a tech degree to go somewhere that will treat you better.

Talking about MMI...it changed my life. I went to Phoenix when I 18 on my 1992 1200 Sporty. Went to MMI on Deer Valley Road Phoenix AZ...I ended up marrying my Harley Instuctors daughter(he taught late model which was the Evo at the time.) So yeah I can honestly say MMI changed my life. I got to see the first fuel injected Electra Glide in 1995. Yeah started out in Theory then went the 7 clinics where they wont let you get close to an H-D. I was youngest in my class. Phoenix was hot but awesome. Kickstand sunk thru the hot asphalt first summer i was there it hit 123. Never left Arizona went to Arrowhead H-D but got into sales. Made better money and no grease under my nails. All and all MMI was good. I do think alot of people enroll that have no mechanical aptitude and MMI is wasted on them. Some things cant be taught. Anyways I enjoy your vids and as a fellow MMI alumni . you are a MMI success story . did you have the blue shirts when you went?

I attend MMI in Phoenix right now and it is gorgeous riding here all year. The campus is great! I would recommend coming to Phoenix. It is not hard to get accepted, and if you don’t mind sharing an apartment CHS housing is good. A lot of people do not like it, but it’s cheap.

Hi John, love your videos. I went to MMI Orlando a few years ago. Took Honda and HD. For your US veteran viewers, the Post 9/11 bill is the way to go. 100% tuition paided along with monthly BAH and a stipend. For anyone looking for housing...you DON'T have to stay in Orlando. I lived about 35 mins away in Clermont. Easy on and off the turnpike to get to and from school. Other than I only wish I would have taken another elective or two... I have no regrets. Keep up the great videos.

little late on this but one of my instructors gave me this advice on tools. buy a set of torque wrenches with the snap on voucher when you graduate. then go buy a "starter set" of tools and a box from craftsman or another mid grade brand. buy the higher grade tools like snap on as you need them in the field. there's no need to drop shit loads of money on tools straight out of school since most of us might already have a nice chunk of student loan debt lol. thats what i plan to do anyway

Hi Mr. John Maxwell. I love your channel since I have learned a lot. Keeping good works! I’m a Harley rider in Macau, China.(Just near Hong Kong, if you haven't heard my city.) Since we don't have dealerships here before2018, I need to do works on my Harley by myself. At first, I was known nothing. But,I just keep searching from the Internet(that's how I find you) and contacting with Harley mechanics in Hong Kong Dealer shop when I got stuck on bike works(I also purchase OEM parts from them.). My friends who ride Harley also let me do service and customs work on their bikes. Since I am really into mechanic jobs, specially in Harley, I am thinking to apply for MMI in the USA. What do you think about a foreigner studying in MMI? Do you know peoples who is foreigner learning in MMI in you time there? Many thanks and best wishes. Regards. Joe Chan

i realize this is an older video, but for people just watching it and as a retired Harley dealer service manager if you are an MMI grad, expect your 1st year at a dealer to be a gopher, oil changes and tires, and a good service manager will have you on the computer a lot going thru your PHDs MMI is great, but it's NOT dealer life, you'll have to learn that with time on the job.

Ok... Let me put my 2 cents to this from my time in MMI in Orlando: I did 2 years there because I did Marine first and then the heavy duty Diesel program at the auto side. UTI has some programs that DO get you the "certified" mechanic title, but only on those that the school has a direct and way bigger partnership with certain brands... Like Harley, but this is NOT true for all of the UTI programs, in the case of Harley, the manufacturer itself is involved in what and what not gets teach about Harley at UTI and I'm willing to bet that the Harley instructors at UTI are Harley factory trained and the hole 9 yards... And that's how you can actually walk out of MMI with a Harley tech. Certificate...(and until 2016, that I was there, this was true for Mercedes Benz/mini and BMW, that I know, but the school should be able to tell you more if you ask the right questions).. BUT... UTI doesn't work like that for the Marine program or the Diesel... Even though the school does have some level of partnership with some of the Marine brands, it's not an involved enough partnership to get you certified , for many reasons I guess, like the Harley program is that... A Harley program... On the Marine side there is NOT a one brand thing... You have Yamahas, mercury, mercruisers, Volvo penta, honda, yanmars... And on and on, it would it take a 5 years or more to go deep enough on each brand to get you certified on it on all of them, (WHY DID I TOOK THOSE 2 THEN?) well, 1:I used my GI Bill (I did not had to get on debt or out of pocket) 2: Cuz in my case, if I walked out of that school knowing 10 more things that I didn't knew when I got in... Then I was happy with that, and I did, I learned more that 10. 3: The school is only as good for you has you make it, and it's no matter in what program you are looking at, the first step you need to take to get you in the door. NOW: my advice for.what it's worth: stay away from the school housing (the one you end with roommates, you will be better if you and those same possible roommates go together Southside the housing system of the school and rent a place all together... You will retreat it if you dont. Employment help from the school is bullshit, all they do is give u a print out with a list of places where to look at (you can do the exact same on internet) they don't set appointment for you, they don't talk on your behalf, they don't give you references, nada... None,... But they will take credit (in paper, at the time to say " x% of our students get placed at work while in school.. and bla bla bla") ... In the Marine case, only the manufacturer itself can "certified you" and only the dealers get seats to send their employees to manufacturer training. But again, having UTI in your resume will get you in the place you want better than someone else with no UTI ... UTI is that... Is the bases, the foundation you need by no means you are good enough to be cut loose at a shop right after UTI... You still have lots to learn.... But yes... It's a very expensive "first step" yeap.. I know, and without the GI Bill I probably won't do it ... Hell... The Diesel program alone was like 40k and the Marine in the high 20s if I remember correctly. But again, with the GI Bill, Did I learned? Yes I did...... And I won't be working where I'm today if I didn't had my UTI piece of paper (well, it also helped been student of the course several times, perfect attendance (attendance if the first one and employee will look at your records) and directors list couple of time... Not bragging... I'm military... If you are too, you understand what SQUARE AWAY means... Not fucking off at school or anything you do... Cuz it's a reflection of yourself.

Something people need to know about MMI (ORL). As with most things, you will get out of something what you're willing to put into it. The instructors are top notch. Most of them genuinely care, and they're all very competent. As for the admin/office side of the school... well, that side of the house is a dumpster fire. If the admin side can screw it up, they will and none of them will accept responsibility. They'll point fingers at someone else, and even force the student into taking refresher courses and LOA's after they screw up and create scheduling conflicts. I've seen it DOZENS of times (it happened to me as well). It can be even worse if you're a student using the GI Bill or Voc rehab, especially right now. The school is 100% pointing the finger at the VA with the problems right now, but the reality is both of them are complicit in the issues. I've never seen the issues with VA / GI Bill at other schools like I routinely see at MMI. People have to know it's a for profit school. Yes, the instructors care. Yes, the admin side will overbook classes and pack people in like sardines (which contributes to 90% of the problems you'll encounter.) Basically, it's a puppy mill for techs and they're getting ready to consolidate some of the courses, like Moto-3 and 4 into one course to push people through faster. Personally, for what students are paying I believe many aren't getting the education they deserve with the rate they're being pushed through. Anyways, I digress. TL;DR Instructors are top notch. Admin side blows. Apply yourself, ask questions, and you'll succeed. Hell, the way it's structured you can bomb most of the actual material but if you at least SHOW UP you'll get through. Don't be that guy though. Again, you get out of it what you invest into it. Be a sponge, talk to your instructors, interact. Pay freaking attention. Instructors talk. Your work ethic (or lack thereof) will be noticed.

I went to MMI and enjoyed the experience until my grandfather passed away and they attendance failed me for days missed while going to his funeral after that I would have had to pay another set of enrollment fees so I lost any respect I had for them at that point. Also be aware about their housing service your better off to find your own apartment.

That Marine won't have time to work on anything but C-130s and he'd be taking a HUGE step down in potential salary by switching to motorcycles. After he gets out he can go to MMI while working as a civilian on airliners making BIG$$$ and do bikes for fun.

I'm a Houston UTI grad from '85-'86. If you are debating cars or motorcycles, go bikes all the way. You'll get tired of working on soccer mom vans with dead burritos and donuts ground into the carpet and crumbs on the seats pretty quick...and you'll never forget the smell...and it's real common:/

No you're not too old. You'll breeze through the electrical stuff and I think the rest of the stuff won't be too complicated either. Cost might be the biggest thing. Just don't be a dick afterwards when you're in a shop going "Well, back in the air force we always did..." 75 times a day. ;-)

I love mechanical stuff, do a lot of my own motorcycle and car maintenance, have a lot of the standard tools. I would love to have a part time job working on bikes. I was thinking of getting a part time sales job, love meeting people and talking bikes
