Motorcycle Masterclass by Dale

Спорт

A short demonstration ride with some useful advice about starting, safety, positioning and observation - this one is only brief and there isn't time to talk about everything but I'll do some more soon - I've only just got the GoPro camera and its excellent for doing things like this.

That was a breath of fresh air. I've watched a lot of 'advanced motorcycling ' videos lately. This was clear, concise and very professional imo. I got a lot out of it. Thanks.

To theoneguy there - Hi and thanks for your message - for some reason it hasn't appeared on here ? - I can understand why you wouldn't think it would be safe to go round a bend on the crown of the road but by approaching a left hand bend in that position gives you an earlier view of any oncoming vehicles in which case of course you would give up that position for safety - it also gives other road users an earlier view of you plus it allows you to take the smoothest course through the bend which in turn, lets you keep the bike more upright and stable - hope that makes sense - Dale

Dale, I occasionally go back and watch your videos; the best videos of motorcycle safe handling on the internet. Each time I watch, I pick up a tip. With this lockdown and at this time of year, preparing to get back out on the road, the videos are an excellent respite from what's going on. Any plans to offer any new ones?

Hi Larry - it's a bit of a surreal time isn't it and unfortunate timing too - I was recently offered an opportunity to do a great new long term project which will have to wait now and Captain Dayglo and I have been talking about doing some more meet ups in Wiltshire so as soon as we're allowed out to play again, they'll be some more videos on the way - stay safe my friend and hopefully we'll all be back out there soon :-)

Hi Dale, many thanks for these videos. I began watching your stuff a couple of years ago when I was returning to biking and working through the IAM process. I’ve missed your regular updates so thought I’d come back to the start and watch them from the beginning. Looking forward to seeing new content from you whenever you’re able. All the best from Scotland where we have another couple of weeks to go before we’re allowed out and about.

Hi Mr W and welcome - glad that you have found this stuff useful - it seems a long time ago that I recorded this one so hopefully you'll find them more interesting as you go along - the first eleven are about staying safe with system and safety to get the basics right and after eleven, I met a guy called Neil (Back2TheBike) on here and did some filming for, and with him to polish his riding up to get him through his IAM test - if you thought that this one was good - you're definitely in for a treat - stay safe - Dale

Great roads down there especially the A39 - the north coast road from North Devon down to the Newquay area - I lived down there for nearly thirty years but I was born in the Forest so came home when I retired - some brilliant roads up here too and fantastic scenery and coffee stops

Yep A39 was great, a bit foggy in the early hours but then bright sunshine for the rest of the day. Made all the difference. Quite surprised how reliable and flickable my RT was (only had it for 6 months - 2014 LE)

Hi Ken, and well done for booking up for some further training, every day's a school day and you never stop learning - you'll find the first eleven films are very basic, stay alive, system and safety stuff - but it's really important to get basics right so that everything else drops into place. I've never liked the word advanced, and much as its an impressive sounding title, what the IAM teach, is system and safety at the speed limit and its the standard that everyone should be driving at. The only difference between advanced and novice is your understanding of basics and the way that you implement them. I met up with Neil, from Back2TheBike online and did the next few videos as demonstration rides for him to teach him good practice in basics and to show him the standard that the IAM would expect him to reach to be test ready. Eventually we met up in Wiltshire to do some rides together which I think were very interesting as you can see the same ride from both bikes perspective and hear our individual thought process for various road scenarios. Neil passed his IAM test with a first and has taught himself to be a really competent rider that demonstrates to a very high standard. If you haven't seen his channel, he's well worth a watch from coming back to riding after a thirty six year break to becoming the very professional rider that he is today - enjoy your bike, stay safe and keep us up to speed with how you get on with the IAM - Dale

@@seaflyfisher Thank you for the comprehensive reply. I have viewed Neil's videos and enjoyed them all very much. I have found them to be very inspiring. I have no wish to break any land speed records. I just want to be able to ride competently and confidently and be the best I can. That is the satisfaction/incentive for me.

Hello from across the big pond. I hail from Toronto and can't wait for our winter to finish at which time I will be buying a new motorcycle, my first after a considerable hiatus. I am doing a comprehensive riding skills course before I go out on my own though. In the meantime, your videos are great to get me thinking in the right way. The books I have read, including Motorcycle Roadcraft, all talk about it but it is especially effective to ride along and see it in action. Thanks and keep them coming. Cheers from Canada, John

I must say the quality of your video's in terms of audio and visual are very good. Last year I paid for an advanced instruction DVD and the content was nowhere near as good as yours. Many thanks.

Hi, and welcome to the channel - the first eleven videos are all about system and safety and most importantly getting basics right - without them, it's not easy to get everything else to drop into place - I met up with Neil from Back2TheBike online and did the next few videos to demo for him the standard that the IAM will expect from you and how to develop your basics to get there - we did some filming together and personally, I really like these because you can see the same ride from both bikes perspective - if you haven't seen his channel, he's trained himself to be a very competent rider and demonstrates to a very high standard - I hope you enjoy my videos, I'd never done anything like this before so the filming and audio was a bit experimental to start with but gets better as you go through - I don't know if you film your own rides but video is a great learning tool, you very often aren't doing what you think you're doing. You'll see as you go through that I'm a huge fan of observation and you'll also find commentary a really useful tool to talk yourself through good practice - best of luck with your IAM rides and if there's anything that either Neil or I can help you with, feel free to ask - stay safe and have fun - Dale

Approaching junction with vehicles waiting to come out with left hand off the bars when you should be prepared to give a horn warning. Another reason for defensive riding is it prevents nobs from trying to squeeze past

Hi Leigh - welcome to the channel - very pleased that you're finding the videos useful - as far as the lifesavers go - observation is really important to our safety and certainly for when you're travelling slowly the lifesavers are a must - cycling is hugely popular now and the riders of road or racing bikes are clipped in to the pedals so they don't like having to stop - consequently some of them aren't too fussed about winging past you on either side to avoid it - a lifesaver in this situation could make all the difference between you remaining in the seat or sitting in the road - safety is paramount so anything you can do to keep yourself safe is a no brainer - best of luck with the IAM and let us know how you get on - cheers Dale

Hi Nigel - thanks for your comment - its filmed on a Black Edition 3 which is superb - I got a tank mount that bolts round the filler cap from Fleabay - some of my early videos were edited and commentary put on afterwards then I got a small external mic from Amazon and was able to do live commentary on the more recent stuff - I don't know what make it is but it was reasonable bucks at about a tenner - glad you enjoyed the video - I'm editing some new stuff at the moment for some more for this summer
