Motorcycle Hammock Wild Camping, Galloway Forest, Scotland, Firebox Stove Steak & Cold Beer

Trying to make the most of the rapidly fading summer, I head out in uncertain weather for a quick overnighter in the Galloway Forest Park. I use the Firebox stove to grill a steak and bed down in the DD Hammock, it gets a bit cold during the night but otherwise it was good to get out on the bike and enjoy some easy gravel roads.

I went up the exact same track as you only two weeks ago and thought the same that it wasn’t worth setting up and ended up overnighting in the small car park at the end of the raiders road. Small world and exciting to see that someone has been exactly where I have it’s a wonderful place to spend a night.

Hi, I looked at camping in the car park as well, if I was in my truck that's where I would've stayed I reckon. I think the Carrick Forest Drive has better options for camping, but you're right, it's such a great place!
well done! I do the same thing in the USA with my firebox, motorcycle and hammock!

My dad used to say “the wise man takes his great coat”
Never slept in a hammock. I dont like to feel restricted and I roll from side to side in bed. Obviously I dont know if this would be an issue. I have been tempted by the hoop bivi and a tarp. Very impressed with the Firebox and how it cooked that steak, probably the knack is waiting for the coals to be right. Smashing short video thank you for sharing.

Cheers Graham! Hammock camping is definitely an acquired taste, Tris hates it pretty much for the same reasons you mentioned so she's not interested in coming with me anymore. I guess a bivi and tarp setup is probably more comfortable and versatile for most people. Yeah the Firebox is great 👍.
Just stumbled on this vid. Thanks! It’s great! By the way, if you ever get caught without an underquilt again, pull your gear sling up against the bottom of your hammock and stick your jacket/spare clothing inside that instead of compressing it under your body in the hammock; it sometimes works. I’m in the tropics, but it still gets ‘cold’ in the wee hours over here (by cold, I mean a chilly 20 degrees Centigrade: which IS chilly after you’ve acclimatized!). Another tip I’ve heard of but not tried, is to lower the tarp edges almost to the ground (to trap more heat/stop underdrafts) and lay hot rocks, heated in the fire, on the ground under your hammock. Signing up to your channel.

Stumbled across your channel on the 3rd hammock episode and was fascinated, thought ‘Man after my own heart’ so subbed, now I find your a bike man as well, 👍 have always been camping, but all my stuff has been geared to fit motorcycles, am only now seeing the benefit of wild camping, hence looking into a DD Tarp, like the easy attitude, so must start playing catch-up on your vids, take care, stay safe, 😃👍

Cheers Cliff! Wild camping is definitely the way to go, especially if you're looking for real tranquility. The DD tarps are also great, you do lose some of the comfort of a tent but it's a much better experience 👍 Ride safe mate.
Same thing happened to me on my first ever overnight camp in France under a tarp. I just totally underestimated how cold it would feel and it was 55 degrees at night! Great video though.

Cheers! Yeah it's heat loss from underneath that gets you, I've slept in the hammock in February with the under blanket and a DD 4 season sleeping bag, I was so warm I didn't need to zip the bag up! On this trip it was 15 degrees at night but I could really feel the cold 😕.

Cheers Mattias! Yeah I really needed the hammock under blanket, it's amazing how much heat escapes from underneath. I think sleeping on the ground would've been warmer. I used an Icelandic sheepskin during last winter in the hammock......sooooo warm 👍

Ah man, that's such bad luck, If I had a pound thinking its so warm in the day time, forgetting how the temperatures can drop at night out in the wild. I now have both the DD under quilt and SnugPak. The the SnugPak is excellent value. You can easily mix and match with them. When using both together in in the coldest nights, I was well toasty :) look forward to more vids
@Adventure-Outdoors

Cheers Gary! yeah I get frustrated at myself, every summer I wake up shivering but never seem to learn the lesson! The SnugPak quilt looks good, I currently have the DD Jura II sleeping bag which has worked well in the winter but it's still a hassle to get in and out even with the centre zip. 👍
Only just come across your channel. Great lifestyle you and your mrs live. One tip you might not have thought about is survival bivvy bag and foil blanket takes up no space in your bike but will make your ass a lot warmer without your underquilt. Looking forward to more viewing 👍🏼

Overland and Outdoors I don’t ride but know a lad from down in Newcastle who does it was him who said to me about the blizzard bag bivvy as a form of keeping cosy with practically no room taken up. Worth a wee go. Happy hammocking 👍🏼
You ALWAYS want to have something to insulate the hammock from below, best would be a proper down underquilt. 3 big luggage boxes for an overnight camp - thats lots of space to not take proper insulation. If its too warm you can always vent, if its too cold you will always be miserable.

Cheers! I'm English, where wild camping is also prohibited! I always tend to head to Scotland these days as it's not too far from me and the Galloway area avoids the mass tourism in summer. It would be worth a trip out on the ferry from Belfast to do some camping in the area 👍

Like the vid but think I'm maybe getting a bit old for a hammock, on another note where did you get your fantastic plates and bowls from ?
@Adventure-Outdoors

Cheers David! The bowls are made by 'Kupilka', I bought them from the bushcraft store - www.thebushcraftstore.co.uk/kupilka-675-c.asp. They're fairly expensive and not very lightweight but they're excellent quality and should last years, they also add a bit of a Scandinavian edge to proceedings which is always a good thing 👍.

Cheers Neil, the jacket is a special edition Steve McQueen six day trials jacket. I managed to buy it from the triumph outlet store in 2015 for about £65. They seem to sell for around £200 second hand on eBay though 😳. It’s a great jacket though, although it’s getting a bit tight for me these days.

Love this, dont suppose you have a grid reference of were you camped? To get to the forest do you have to come anti clockwise round loch doon or is there a way south of loch Doon? Thanks, love this.
@Adventure-Outdoors
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, I was on the Raiders Road here. There are two ways to get on to it; from the north the road starts at the bottom of Loch Bradan just where the river dee leaves the loch on the A712. You can also get onto the road just north of Mossdale on the A762 at the other end. I camped on the edge of Stroan Loch. The Carrick Forest Drive heads south from the end Loch Doon which is another great road, they can both be linked up with a run on the tarmac via Newton Stewart. 👍

@Adventure-Outdoors

@@oceansoverland You can get onto it from the A762, next to Bennan Cottage, it's £2 for a parking ticket. The main car park is at Otters Pool along the route but there are 'no overnight parking' signs there, but there's plenty of small lay-by's as Mark says with no signs. I think the better route is the Carrick Forest Drive, if you put 'Stinchar Bridge' into google maps you'll see the start of the route heading east, the road takes you to Loch Doon which in my experience has always been rammed full of wild campers on summer weekends, but I've camped on the forest drive with the Hilux before with no problems.
Hi fella, just discovered this film... nice work 👍 Tell me... what bike jacket and waterproof is that?
@Adventure-Outdoors

Cheers mate! The bike jacket is Triumph Steve McQueen international six day trials special edition and the waterproof is just a £20 Regatta job from Go Outdoors or somewhere. Just had a quick look on eBay for the Triumph jacket, some one is selling it for £130 used, I bought mine new for £70, although that was in 2012 👍. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRIUMPH-STEVE-MCQUEEN-INTERNATIONAL-SIX-DAYS-TRAIL-MOTORCYCLE-JACKET-SIZE-UK-42/274252475634?hash=item3fdab8acf2:g:v9AAAOSwGBpd5m9e
