Motorcycle Chain Maintenance - What Should I do?

The Essential Guide to Any Motorcycle Traveler - Online Course: rtw-adventures.com/online-cou...
How often I have lube my chain?
In this video I will talk about motorcycle chain maintenance. There are so many, very informative videos in KZread and actually you don’t need another one. I am not going to teach you how to do it, because it is very simple procedure and everybody could do it, even your kids. What I will do, is to show you a different point of view. To push you to see the full picture instead of watching one very small point and spending so much energy and money on it.
The reason to make this video is a commend from one of my subscribers:
Seriously underrated channel. You make great and enjoyable video contents which helps me a lot as a new-ish rider. Thank you my friend! I am glad that you find it useful! If you are willing and able, perhaps you can make a video on cleaning the chain? I've seen many videos/posts online but they contradict each other. Some say use WD 40 to clean the chain and some say don't, etc. Since you are quite experienced, maybe you can provide a better explanation about it.
Thank you very much for this commend. Yes, I will try to give you a better explanation. As I promised I will show you a different prospective, a different way to see the full picture.
I will start with the most obvious, the chain need to be lubricated. That’s correct, but with what and how often is the question everybody ask!
There are actually three ways to do it:
1. Use engine oil or some kind of grease.
I will never recommend to do it, because the engine oil and the grease collect a lot of dust and sand and the chain become like a sand paper. Especially if you ride off road. Yes, it might be very cheap, but as a result you will wear your sprockets and chain itself much faster. It will last longer if you just leave it without any care.
2. Use a proper chain lubricant, once per 500km and cleaned with chain cleaner once per 3,000 or more km.
I like this method and I think that this is more than enough, but will talk about it later on. About the WD 40 to use or no, I can’t really tell you because I don’t have personal experience with it. It will be useful to checks the substances it’s made from and see if they can or can’t harm the O rings of your chain.
3. It is the oiler.
Many of you love it, because, once you install it you don’t need to do anything. It is not exactly like that, but will discuss it later.

Thank you for the video. To clean my chain I remove it and place it in an oil drain pan with enough diesel fuel to cover the the chain. I then scrub it with a stiff nylon brush. Next I clean it in warm soapy water and rinse it off well with clean water. I then hang it and let it dry. I lube the chain with Dupont Chain Saver (yellow can). It is a wax based lube with Teflon and in my opinion is the best out there.

  • @SteelJM1
    @SteelJM17 жыл бұрын

I'm with him on this. I learned quickly riding in the dusty dirty Arizona conditions that any type of wet lube would just have dust stick to it and turn into a grinding paste. So I switched to hosing off the chain with low pressure water, WD-40 to displace the water (afterall that's what it's made for) and then teflon dry lube after drying the WD40 off. Much more often on the dirtbike than the streetbike, of course.

Thank you for mentioning oilers.... Chain drive is a bane for high-mileage trips, but that's what most bikes have. The need for constant cleaning and lubing, and probably not done frequently enough. After I cooked a chain and sprocket after a 9,000+ mile (US) trip, I bought a Pro-Oiler automated oiling system. BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT. It paid for itself when I went twice as long without needing to replace the chain and sprockets...and at THREE times the distance, it was still good. I could now enjoy the ride without worrying about the chain was running dry during the day. Many don't realize that HEAT that kills o-ring chains. You lube the chain to moisturize the o-rings. Most spray on lubes wear off after 50 miles. No big deal on single day rides, but bad news if you are going cross-country. A few drops of SAE 30 weight oil every 3 miles or so on the chain keeps everything good.

Thank you for the nice video. One or two notice if i may: The wear of the chain and sprockets depend, between others, on the type of the engine.A V twin for example will chew the chain much faster than an I4 because of the way the two engines distribute their power. Also i dont agree about what you say the chain needs to be changed as it gets older.I own a Hayabusa 2008 mont with 50.000 km on it with the OEM chain.Hard kms with 2 persons and side cases on trips over Europe.Never changed it.I have cleaned it twice,I lub it every 500 km or after every ride with rain or wash.It even never needed to be adjusted until now!Of couse chain and sprockets cost about 250 euros...Thanx again, keep on!

I tried the same approach , bought my motorcycle new and lubed the chain every 300km and I got 15000 km with original factory fitted chain and sprockets.......dismal results. Here in south Africa, Cape town, chains and sprockets are not cheep items. So, I tried the dry approach and roughly the same result. I was using the motorcycle for commuting and off road touring through the Karoo, with pillion .

When I was using my bikes for commuting (especially in winter/salt conditions) I used a manual chain oiler (Osco Oiler, so not an automatic (scott)oiler). That works amazing because I just never came around to spraying my chain : left home in the dark...worked all day and came home after dark. Cold and wet, bike was outside...."maybe tomorrow I will do the chain"....until the chain is rusted and gone. The oiler...just pull the tab at a traffic light and drive away, oiled&done. In snow, rain, dark whatever. I just oiled every time I started to hear the chain, and every time I stopped for gas. For casual riding in good weather, it's not really that important...I just use a spray now and again.

When it comes to WD 40, i use it for many - many years to clean the chain... and NEVER had the slightest problem with my chain. I spary WD 40 on a cloth, wipe the chain and so spray the chain with a lubricant! Everithing feels smooth right after this. I Use D.I.D Oring chain and they last about 35000 klm on my XRV 750!

I agree, when x-ring or o-ring type chain loose its grease in links, it will be worn out very quickly. Thing is , mostly main reason for grease lost is worn out x or o-rings since their main role is to keep grease there. Problem is when those rings are worn out. Thats where good lubrication come, to keep those rings wet and reduce friction and weather effect on them.

Greetings from Bulgaria. I am mostly bicyclist and a casual biker, but i started using for all my chains a homemade paraffine wax mixture. For me it is perfect for chains without O-ring. When mixing the wax it normaly contains 3/4 of candle wax and 1/4 some lubricating agent to make the paraffine more pliable. the candle wax can be mixed wit oils and greases containing PTEF, molybdenum, graphite, fullerene and so on. When i melt and wax a chain it usually perform good for about 2 months of daily use. This is based mostly on bicycle use. I also i prefer waxing because there is no need for cleaning the chain. Only thing is that you need to takeoff the chain from the motorcycle and it is not suitable with O-ring because if the melting temperature of paraffine. I guess it would be more suitable for small bikes that used a chain split link, like mine 125cc.

Greeting from Bangkok Thailand!!! ya you are right. If you cannot effort the lube, go with bicycle!! haha I love this statement. But anyway, I lube my chain just when I want to and considering only when it's dirty(around once a month). Because I ride on normal road and use it for commuting 40-50 km a day. But If i'm on a long trip, I will just clean and lube before start then lube it very little during the trip. Don't worry too much about the lube exactly as what you said(but doesn't mean doing nothing). It will be as what it's. Just enjoy the ride!!! Good Video!!!

The high wear point of the chain is between the pin and roller which is where the factory puts the grease and seals it in, and the dirt out. But you need to clean the chain and oil it to lube the roller - sprocket interface. If you don't it will heat and dry out the grease at the pin. The faster you ride the bigger the issue (expressways etc.) A loose chain also accelerates wear. For adventure bikes seeing a lot of dirt roads and dust, or riding in a lot of rain. lube won't help much.

good video but I disagree about the old motor oil, I started using it in the Philippines on my Honda and my Yamaha and although I had always used chain spray here in Canada except on my Moto Guzzi I started using motor oil on my Versys chain, I replaced the Chain and sprockets at 47.000 kms, might have been the same with chain lube but the way I see it that the only thing that needs lubing on a o ring chain is the o rings and its fine for that, if its on my DRZ which gets muddy sometimes I clean the chain first before lubing

I am using an oiler made by me (and sold to others). Cost: 12 euro. Oil for one year: less than 2 euro. Chain changed in 2017, more than 36000 km. I don't want to use any spray. Cost for a chain kit: 100 euro. Installed by me. Still holding well on my Vstrom 650, used mainly with pillion and a lots of luggage.

My Scottoiler is 15 years old on my Bandit 1200 and it gives me zero problems (I've only had 2x oilers in 27 years riding multiple bikes). Like you, I use to clean and spray, but the oiler is way less effort :-) Chain life is around 40,000km on sports bikes. Strangely enough the only problem is surface rust. Anyway, at the end of the day you use what works for you.

In a way it is the same as maintaining your car. You can use most expensive oil, wash it, wax it, cover nano-wax, etc. Or you can use it as a tool to go from a to b. So there is no correct answer. If chain will be dirty from sand and dust or rusty it will definitely go wrong earlier, because either it will eat sprocket or will not be as elastic as it should be. I “eat” chain/sprokets in 15000-30000km. It depends on bike and where/how you ride. Now I have a street bike. So I clean the chain once in 500km-1000km. Depends if I ride in rain and how chain looks itself. Proper clean and lube will protect your O-rings from grease and who the hell knows what else from road. There are lots of chemicals on street, oil, diesel, petrol, whatever. WD40 is cheap, safe and simple way to clean. Something like Motul chain lube is also quite cheap and simple way to lube it. Take a chain brush, some clean rags and do it. It takes 15-20minutes if you have center stand, or rear wheel lift. And costs ~20 euros per season if you buy big WD40 and a big can of chain lube. And it looks better :))))

Hey interesting topic. My opinion is that lubrication is also usefull to dampen vibrations, impacts and noise. I feel it in the footpegs when the chain is dry. If i get you right, you say that not spraying won't affect the life of the chain kit? I can guarantee you the opposite. Drive for 10 days, 8h a day in rain and it will kill the chain and sprockets 5000km or less. Same for the chain guides on your swingarm etc.. do not overlube but don't ride "dry"

Wasn't that only with regard to o-rings? The point being made here is that it might deteriorate the greese inside a chain.

  • @anniewhite6459
    @anniewhite64597 жыл бұрын

Back in the day before o-ring chains you could buy product by Duchams, I think that is how you spell it. It was a tin of grease about 30 cm in diameter that you put on a stove to heat up the grease, when the grease melt you place the chain in leave for a few minutes then remove and hang up to cool, and then you have fully lubed chain. Very messy and time consuming but worked great, o- rings just saved a lot of time. If you clean your chain just make sure it does not have an effect on the rubber, kerosene for example is not good for rubber, once the o- rings swell they are no good, grease leak out dirt and water get in.

I have to disagree with you on kerosene statement. It doesn't effect rubber o-rings on the chain and it's way cheaper and more effective than sprays. There is tons of info about that, check it out. Moreover, I do clean my chain with kerosene for last 15+k kilometers and to honest I have not noticed any problems with it.

I am not a petro- chemical expert or engineer but have been a motorcycle courier for over 20 years and done over 1,000,000 Klms in that time and ridden 650 singles, which are notoriously bad on chains. At first I cleaned my chain with kerosine, then I used mineral turpentine, and now I do not even clean the chain, the most it gets is some Shell Dobotex bike wash when I clean the bike, which is not often. And much to my surprise I get the best mileage from the chain when I do not clean it, normally 45,000 Klms, and I do keep records because I use the bike for work so every cent I spend is a tax deduction. My bike gets ridden every day in all weathers, apart from snow, we not get snow in Australia, so as for salt being an issue in wear I do not know, but I guess some neat Dobotex and warm water would still clean the chain. I am old school and prefer to keep solvents away from rubber as much as possible, same with air filters I never clean in kero, both rubber and foam are petroleum based, so is kerosene.

Just completed 7k trip on the 1190 adventure (80% road 20% dirt) and as a test I didn't do any chain maintenance. I can report I had to adjust my chain twice and I've noticed it's sticking on 30% of the links but otherwise it's still fine. It has a total of 21,000kms on it and I should get a fair bit more so I think the cost of over maintaining the chain is cost effective. I think for the average rider you only need to lube you chain every 750kms. Give it a clean with soapy water if it's it's gritty or if it's really bad then use a chain cleaner. I recon it's almost cheaper to never clean or lube the chain even if you have to replace it a little earlier. For dirt riders and high performance sport riders it's a different story.

WD-40 and CRC 5-56 and such make dirt and sand stuck to the chain like a mofo. I have tried in a bicycle and gears stopped working well (I have a 3x9 system). After cleaning and dry lubing the chain the gears started to work absolutely fantastic. Obviously motorcycle is a bit different but I don't see sand and dirt being a good thing anyway.

@George W: WD 40 can be used for cleaning the chain, but not for lubrication since it's a solvent. WD 40 makes a mess, collects dirt (because it's wet) and does not stay in a high speed chain.

Right. It is not a long term lubricant for anything. WD--water displacement. It does clean. I soak the chain, leave it to drip a few minutes, brush and wipe as much off as possible and then spray a good lubricant and then wipe off the excess. Generally get about 12000 miles on chain and sprocket set.

My chain looks always fine, the problem are my chain spokes, that grind and break. But I only ride off-road, and even so they take more than 10.000km to break, so it's really not a big deal. I lubricate my chain just a little every time I'm going to ride, it's like a good luck ritual, I don't really care that much how efficient that is. If it's going to grind, let it grind, I won't spend money lubricating it because a new one is not that expensive. That's why I only use old motor oil, although you said it's worse to do that, so I don't know anymore, I might as well let it without any lubrication. The dust take away any lubrication quite fast anyway.

10W40 is fine as longer outside is less than 30 C. Over that is better to have 10W50. Synthetic oils are better on high temperatures.
