Motor Trend Editor-In-Chief Angus MacKenzie travels to The Brickyard where he explores the greatest Indy 500 of them all -- the 1963 Indianapolis 500 -- and realizes his childhood dream of driving "Ol' Calhoun," the car Parnelli Jones piloted to victory in the '63 race.

All...almost, all is well in this Motor Trend Magazine special about "Old Calhoun" - Parnelli's three year old A.J. Watson design built car yet...seeing in the views of the late Jimmy Clark's car, the Lotus-Ford...it was showing the 1965 Lotus model, #38 series ... not the 1963 year Lotus (which was model #34 according to the history of the Lotus manufacturer) Oh well... Some years ago (as I am writing this on July 5, 2023), the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum had the '63 model of Clark's. It was impressive to me. I was nearing 13 years old when my folks and I went to the first day of Time Trials at I.M.S. in May of '63. We saw the Trials between the third and fourth turns. This was my first time at the Speedway and I was hooked deeply with Indy Car racing from that point onward. Of all the decades I've watch the "500" races, the 60's and 70's had the greatest impact to me. Parnelli Jones is one of the greatest all-time racers in the sport of auto racing. As of now (7-5-2023) I'm glad to see he's still around.
that 4 banger sounds awesome.
Very well done I love it BIG thumbs up.
Great Video!!!
Driving Calhoun! I am sooooo jealous. The only Indy car I would rather drive or even just sit in is the first NOVI. Got to see both at the IMS Museum in 2010. Can't wait to go back.
Great video ..!
I really love learning about motorsports. Awesome video
Sure do miss my father cotton. 😢
Amazing!
Great video!
This was an incredible video. Really enjoyed it.
Parnelli is a Legend.
like being in line for new apple iphone 4g..
Wow, great video. I love these long ones! Just like the Australian video. Do more of these please!
I've seen this car at the outstanding IMS Museum several times. Every time I do I think they need to a spill oil under it to complete the display. When I mention it to the staff, they are not amused. Not Parneli's fault be the car should have been black flagged. USAC just couldn't allow a rear engine car to win.
Instead of him describing what it sounded like , how about turning off the music and shutting up?
Moar videos like this one !!!
Angus is the Walter Cronkite of automotive journalism. The letdown of this film was the questionable editing and the shaky camera work. A bit of a decline in quality compared to the Australian Subaru Outback package.
Indy 500 with Australian accent is kinda weird.
