Moto Guzzi V7 Stone - Black to basics

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Another look at the Moto Guzzi V7 Stone. With its shaft drive, low seat height , alloy wheels and completely blacked out, is this the perfect winter classic? Where better to check it over than Haughley Castle, just a stone’s through from Mototechniks, the local Moto Guzzi and Yamaha dealer.

I've always had a soft spot for Moto Guzzi but I've never owned one. I love that Guzzi twitch when you start it up it reminds me of the twitch I get from my GS. I think the special looks marvellous but I'm also quite a fan of the v85TT.

My older son has one, it is parked in my garage for the winter. I had the chance to ride it last fall when he was home. It is a fun bike to ride and it felt right at home on the curvy roads here in New England. The bike is very simple mechanically and has a definite feel of old school charm. Certainly a different feel than my Road King as expected. Spring is still a couple of months away. Looking forward to rolling it out of the garage and taking it for a ride again.

Your reviews are awesome man, I love the honesty and sheer joy! Ive been looking and looking for a new bike and retro is my bag but I’ve not been able to make up my mind I’ve tried Yamaha, Suzuki, Triumph and Hondas creations on the retro but I missed a trick and didn’t even think about Guzzi. I was in a dealers the other day and looking at another brand and looked across at the V7 and I couldn’t take my eyes off it, absolutely stunning. Pictures and videos do not do this bike justice. I’m pretty sure that very soon I will have one of these beauties. Thanks again for a brilliant review.

I too love the details on the new V7 III. But, for me to notice them- visually- I need contrast. The black is only offset by eagle/MG branding & the rearsets. I do enjoy a splash of color & it allows me to visualize the lines of each item & note how it works! But, mostly, I love sounds. Intake, exhaust, whine, burbles on overruns... A symphony of sounds, all working together. Sort of like most Triumph triples. I adore the Street Triple's sound- delicious! No radio for me!

Gorgeous Guzzi . Sophia Loren always comes to mind when I think of Guzzis 😍. When I think of BSA , a vision of Nora Batty appears . 😱 I'm rebuilding a 1974 850 Eldorado , the horsepower and torque figures are almost identical to this V7 850 , which is interesting . You seem to be able to change gear without it clunking like a Harley , Guzzi mirrors are good and haven't changed in about 20 years , they are very aerodynamic and don't vibrate much , I use them on other bikes . I prefer the twin clock version , although the green and silver centenario version is a good looker . As for taste ? Well , who says you can't have liqourice on your pizza ?

I do love shaft drives too. But for some time, they almost despaired except on some premium big bikes. Guzzi is the only one at the moment that put them on their low range bikes /on all their bikes/. Once upon a time, we had 250s with shaft drives.. Yamaha had 400 in the 80s with shaft and even small cub like bike 50cc with shaft again. Now it's all gone.. 1100cc cruisers with chains. It's a pity .. Chains are ok and even unreplaceable for road racing and dirt/enduro bikes that you use for fun and then service them at home but why on earth they put a chain on a 1000cc touring or commuter bikes .. It's lazy and been cheap. Sorry for the long chain/shaft natter. Marvelous bike and natter mr. TAYM

Compared to chain and sprockets, shaft drive, adds more weight, is more expensive, reduces power to the rear wheel and is not used by racers. So then ..... nothing to commend it to the average motorcyclist who wants the cheapest, lightest, most powerfull road bike that also looks like a racer. In my local Kawasaki, Suzuki , KTM dealer's showroom there are sports bikes, Sports touring bikes, sports adventure bikes and sports dirt bikes, but not many sensible bikes. Royal Enfield have kicked a few doors down with their low powered but nice to ride bikes and Moto Guzzi are still doing their own thing. Hooray for that.

Most Authentic Competitor to the BSA for character. However, it's more in the Triumph T100 ballpark for performance and price so, IMHO sits in a niche of its own. I think you should ride the V7 Special for the full-fat 100% retro vibe though. Also, I'm not keen on Matt black paint.

Nice video as always TAYM. Your question - "is it a good winter bike?" Well .. I have one just like the one on this video. It would be better if the front mudguard was bigger. If the sides where wider and wrapped, just a little, around the tyre and longer to keep dirt off the front of the engine. I have fitted a fenda extenda. The rear guard is a little better, but stops too short and there is always piles of filth and grit on top of the swing arm and around the clutch actuator arm. If only the bike was fttted with a hugger type guard. Vibration - there are areas in the rev range that produce tingles that make my hands go to sleep and almost induce "vibration white finger". I find it vibrates less further up the rev range. I am told the vibration reduces as the engine beds in and it will be better hen it gets to 10,000 miles. It is improving even though it has only got 3000 miles on it. Starting - the engine oil needs to warm up for about 5 miles of steady running before the shakes calm down a bit. By then the gearbox oil has warmed, gear changes are smoother and finding neutral is much easier. Fit and finish. I like the look of the bike and the paintwork looks good. I fitted a "Bagster" tank cover to protect the 'Matte' finish The only parts than have gone rusty are GIVI bolts that secure the GIVI engine guard. They went rusty in a week. I fiited a centre stand ( £265) The first service at 930 miles included a valve check and cost £303 , The recent "Annual ( low miles) service" which is an engine oil and filter change and an inspection and that cost £266. I have been getting about 65 MPG. Display - the so called ears that hold the indicator repeaters are in fact the tips of the Motor Guzzi 'Eagle's wings'. It has a gear indicator but no fuel guage but does have a low fuel warning light. I reset the trip meter every time I fill up and this gives me 200 miles before I look for more fuel. I don't wait for the low fuel light. As for the display being off centre ... that is just perfect for mounting a satnav or a phone and for both to be clearly visable. I was surprised to find the streering to be so light and so far I have had no issues. However, I don't ride in the rain if I can help it and the bike is on SORN from first frost to April so as to reduce the chance of salty corrosion and because I am old and don't like the cold. Do I like it? Oh! yes very much.

I agréé with you , the mudguards are way too short and slim to protect from all the water , mud , grit and all sorts of debris. It s beause of the actual ”bobber style” hype in the modern classic motorcycles..... And when riding on wet roads , your boots, trousers will be soaked and all the bike dirty after just à few miles . These bikes are not equipped with a center stand anymore . Is it for cost saving reasons ? My first bike was a Moto Guzzi V50 forty years ago.I think that the original models of the time were more convenient for the motorcyclists in daily use. Now we get less for the price you pay . Sad, isn t it?

I found it didn't offer enough room for my knees and quite small for a bike of its engine size. I never considered myself OCD but that clock really messed with my Feng Shui 🙄😮🙈. As a fellow fan of Liquorice Allsorts we're all used to Maynard's or Bassett's which are very pricey now. Beautiful bike. I’m like you, I would need to go with the twin clocks. Especially since on this bike they put the single instrument pod off center. Drove me nuts when you were riding it around! Bikes like this, to me, are more about how they make you feel and less about their specs.

I quite like some of the Guzzi bikes but there are no dealers near, it’s probably a few hundred miles so not much use. Don’t know what they’re like for reliability or how good dealers are when they are available. One of my friends had a LeMans back in the late 70’s when we were still on 250’s unfortunately he had always been a bit wreck less, rode far to fast, had already had many accidents on other bikes but all sadly ended on the Le Mans.

Switch gear is rubbish. Went to mototechniks tested one. Left hand rocker switch broke while testing it I pressed it and went floppy something snapped inside. Tipical Italian electrics. Apart from that switch gear the bike was lovely to ride. Simon Did say don't let the switch put you off buying it, I took a rain check on that. But if I did get one I would have to fit the Moto gadget switch gear system. Don't expect a switch to break while testing it. And the only negative points I found were finding neutral, and getting your heel on the side stand.

Better broken switch gear than broken drive shafts or broken electronic suspensions as on BMW GS-es and RNineT's.. I own a V7III Special, V7III Milano and V7 850 Special (next to two V7's from the 70's) and I never had any trouble with the switchgear (or any other item), neither on my V85TT.

Finish and electrics are still low points . I love my V7`s (had a 750 and an 850) but why people keep saying this would be a great winter bike is beyond me for these 2 reasons alone. Know someone who had to spring for a complete new wiring harness after 2 years... just out of warranty. V7III rider with knackered speedo unit and no known cure other than £700 new unit.. and a long wait. My 850 stone headlight flickering like `70s disco in a long downpour. Condensation in speedo unit and head light. Met a guy on a newish V85 at the side of the road as he was pushing the cruise control switch back into its housing, like something out of a Kinder Egg with a biro spring thrown in. I really must love my V7 !!!

@@fasteddy3661 I watched a video on KZread. His channel is called fat lad on a motorcycle. He had the big touring BMW. He had a nasty experience. He had total brake failure, luckily he was pulling up in a large long layby to stop a have a coffee. He said that if that had happened while on a motorway or a road while trying to stop quickly things might have been a lot more serious. BMW have known about this random fault but haven't recalled the bikes that are affected with the faulty ABS pump. How much do these cost to have that type. Disgusting and life threatening.

Would of been great if they had the 76-80 HP of the V85 models or even half in between 70hp.Neutral is harder to find cause it Shaft drive & eventually get use to it & might take a bit longer to get neutral than non shaft bikes but worth it for the shaft drive. 853cc ain't they? That enormous 21L tank give you 350km range with a couple of liters left in tank. The V-twin is easy to do valve adjustment & 2 valves each side & tank can stay on. Lots of bonuses to like with these bikes.
