Motivation Interviewing with Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence: Session 1 of 3

Ойын-сауық

The Portland State University School of Social Work presents:
Motivation Interviewing with Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence
Scenario 1: "Emmy's First Encounter with a IPV Counselor"
Dr. Stéphanie Wahab
Motivational interviewing is a guiding approach to communication used to support individuals to make changes in their lives. The MI approach focuses on evoking and eliciting rather than telling or advising. Individuals are supported to tap into their own motivations for change. The scenarios included in this training DVD demonstrate the use of MI with survivors of intimate partner violence. Demonstrations of the spirit of MI and numerous skills including but not limited to the opening strategies (OARS), setting a focus for work, eliciting change talk, exploring ambivalence, dancing with discord, and providing information are demonstrated throughout.

I cannot express how thrilled I am to find these videos! I am a program manager for a domestic violence advocacy center and it is so hard to find real-life examples of an advocate in action... not a therapist, or attorney, or police officer, etc. These are now my go-to for training new staff. Thank you!!!

Well done, this counsellor is just knocking it right off the park. So elegant how she used it.

Thank you SO much for sharing this in public. Great to see a demonstration of MI when one is not able to attend any training and still needs to assist vulnerable women on their journey through this challenge. I often feel inadequate and overwhelmed by the magnitude of their experiences. Just watching you validating her feelings and thoughts and see how she becomes more confident and feels empowered to take the next step, makes me feel that I might be able to assist them more appropriately in future. Thank you for this demonstration.

Valuable interactions. I do wonder if the clinician should have intervened more when the issue of violence arose. Pushing someone to the ground is a significant escalation of conflict. I think the single Mom could have been asked if she she is alright, if she feels safe. She might be told that an incident such as this is not her fault. It needs to be said that under no circumstances is that a valid response to any issue. Help her to establish the boundaries in her mind so she can articulate them to the partner.

I think what you are saying is really valuable, when there is more certainty on the part of the service user. What I see is that the clinician was trying to help her understand and gain awareness around her situation being really careful to not push, because she is clearly in a stage where she still sees her partner as good, and going directly to telling her her opinion or giving advice could result in her pushing back or not coming back, which in the long run would be less safe for the client. I'm not an expert though but with the little experience I have this is my interpretation :)

Good validating, paraphrasing and reflecting, however she left the person "unzipped", so intro with reassurance you are safe here and I am advocating for you, this is doable then conclude with encouraging and empowering words, story or even metaphors.

Also rather than paraphrasing, in MI terminology it's referred to as reflecting. Its aim is to convey understanding, validation, and acceptance.

invest in a boom or 2 lav mics. & change the backdrop to a green sheet, so then you can chroma-key "MI in DV cases...in Paris...MI in DV cases...in Rome...on the moon". This effects everyone.

I mean if you have a boyfriend or husband, you need to logically realize its not appropriate for you as a woman to be alone with another man period. I would say the same for your boyfriend with another woman. Avoid it whenever possible. I am not excusing his behavior at all but I do wish people would use more common sense...

@@ljfm1683 hahaha ok...you need to realize what abuse actually is...there is such a thing called respect within a relationship. Do not put yourself in positions where there will ever be a question of your loyalty and not being alone with the opposite sex is something pretty simple...its not something they should have to ask you to do...you should already be doing it...but good luck on maintaining a relationship with someone who is always questioning if ur cheating because you allow the thoughts to be there

@@ralphford4092 Good job at blaming the victim. Two adults of the opposite sex can be in a room together and not have issues. The abuser wanted control of the situation because he was not the focus. That is not on her to control his reactions. That is on him. He is a grown man. He should take care of himself.
