"Mother, Why Did You Leave Korea? - 50 Years After

In the 1960s and 70s, Korean nurses and miners were given special immigration visas to work in Germany through a special program. We had a unique invitation to interview one of these nurses who came to visit Korea, 50 years later, joined with her husband. This interview was even more poignant as her son, Daniel Tändler, asked the questions.
We hope you enjoy this video and learn more about this unique bit of German and Korean history.

I left Korea in 89 in my 20's to study in France. 30+ years later, now I am in my 50's, and every time I go back to Korea, I realize I am a "foreigner" because the country has changed so much during the last 3 decades. Korea has become rich and developed, but I often miss the "old" Korea. Also... on a separate note, thank you for this project. My brother's family lives in Germany and they have a 13-yr old daughter. I think this story will be an inspiration to them. Thank you, and God bless.

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful story with me. I am a Korean woman living in the Netherlands with my Dutch husband, and I am currently pregnant (week 35) with our half Korean/half Dutch boy. Your parents’ love story kinda reminds of mine. We also just fell in love to each other organically regardless of our cultural background difference due to our similar personalities. And I have to confess that I cried so much when the mum said ‘I am so thankful to have these boys who grew up so wonderfully’ and the son gave her a thank you look back. It really shows how much these parents/kids love each other, I hope I can build the same relationship with my soon-to-be-born halfie son. Thanks again and lots of hugs to your family from Holland.

If there is one piece of advice I might give you, please try to raise your son bilingually. Almost all half Koreans who cannot speak Korean have big regrets at some point in their lives. You know I give a lot of credit spiritually to those who are willing and able to handle the challenges and also the greater blessings of reaching out to a separated culture in the most profound way....marriage life long commitment and love for children....these wonderful bi cultural children will see the world in some ways deeper and more profoundly and understand things more keenly what it means to be fully a child of GOD....after all.....if the bible is correct......Noah....the father of all the living on earth....must have more or less looked like a bi cultural racial person...if you combine the best elements of each culture....you get a even more fully beautiful and wonderful person who views the world as their home rather than only a small country as their home....they will inevitably feel more responsibility for the world at large and thus be more motivated to make the world a more lovely and beautiful place.....Noah...the father of all the living counting back about 80 generations would from heaven( If he is there looking to the earth) would recognize each one of these precious bi cultural children as his especially beloved children as they more resemble his own genetic and mindset framework when compared to the homogeneous single cultural person. This is no knock on homogeneous societies , rather it is showing in what important aspects and respects the bi cultural child holds keen advantages of experiencing life more abundantly and fully in many regards.... I see half chinese, half american children; half korean , half american; half japanese half korean; half taiwanese half korean; half african half korean, half jewish half korean; half french half korean; then you have the quarter korean ...quarter italian, quarter.....etc... I see so many of these families and they all have a certain beautiful flare about them...they also tend to be in some respects more understanding of cultural struggles and more tolerant of different cultures ....in some regards more respectful....obviously this is not always the case....but in general this trend can be easily observed.... growing up in the USA with parents who are from korea really shows me what this entire identity struggle others go through really means and how it affects the emotions and in what ways those emotions reveal more about what value systems we embrace and recognize as one's own. It always reveals the beauty and strength and resolve and intelligence ....faith.....and love that parents have for their children and how children can sense this oftentime very deeply! God bless. Noah the father of all the living must be approving ....and thus many blessings are in order in time for the bi cultural families. Cultural and political ambassadors on the front lines....movers and shakers....fully human...fully tried....ever able to know faith more deeply .

Given her son is probably around 30, when he was a child South Korea was just starting to have democracy and rebuild itself - back then it wasn’t at the point where it’s at now. (And even then, the school system is debatable, I don’t know how educated you are on that topic.)
