MOTHER.
Mother
You had me
But I never had you
I wanted you
You didn’t want me
So I
I just got to tell you
Goodbye
Goodbye
Father
You left me
But I never left you
I needed you
You didn’t need me
So I
I just got to tell you
Goodbye
Goodbye
Children
Don’t do
What I have done
I couldn’t walk
And I tried to run
So I
I just got to tell you
Goodbye
Goodbye
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
Mama don’t go
Daddy come home
written by John Lennon
John Lennon: vocals and piano
Ringo Starr: drums
Klaus Voormann: bass
Yoko Ono: wind
Produced by John & Yoko and Phil Spector.
The video explores layers in the meaning of the lyrics and performance of the song - telling the story of John’s relationships with mother and father figures, including fractured memories from his childhood and important moments in his life.
We see parental figures gone too soon and desperately missed: his mother Julia, father Alfred, his Aunt Mimi and Uncle George Smith who raised and housed him for most of his childhood and teens, and manager Brian Epstein.
We see John with his wife Yoko Ono Lennon (who he nicknamed ‘Mother’ after they became parents with Sean), we consider John as a father, with sons Julian Lennon and Sean Ono Lennon, and then explore themes of John absent, gone too soon, missed sorely by his wife, children, extended family and the world.
Produced by Yoko Ono Lennon, directed and edited by Simon Hilton with 3D compositing by David Frearson, the video was first created in 2003 for the DVD release: 'Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon' and includes photographs by Bob Gruen, Stanley Parkes, Geoff Rhind, Robert Freeman, Jack Mitchell, Iain Macmillan, Paul Goresh, Joyce Ravid and many others.

It's not a song but a masterpiece and a hit. Who's listening this masterpiece in 2024? I'm sure John Lennon sang this hit with all his heart and all he felt. It's just a masterpiece.

Naprosto souhlasím. John měl neuvěřitelný talent. Zpíval, hrál a skládal svým krásným srdcem❤.

The most heart wrenching song ever written- Lennon sings and imitates himself as a 5year old child screaming out for his parents who left him. Only Lennon could write this. This is what makes him a a great song writer.

Lennon is "the man". His strength here is undeniable, and heart breakingly honest. My own father died in December '71 Four years later I got this LP. I listened to it endlessly, whether sober or soaring high on LSD. Everytime I heard this song I cried like a baby knowing my own mother, too, would one day die. She died in 2009.. Tell the people in your life that you care about that you love them. After their dead its too late. Forgiveness and gratitude bring peace. Good luck. (And it still makes me cry.) RIP

I listen to this song because of how my Father abandoned me because my Stepmother hated my existence and whatever other reasons I am unaware of (she was his first love, they broke up, he got with my Mum, they had me, and later on my Stepmother and him got back together and had my brothers and he abandoned me about 8 years later after years of me being psychologically and physically abused by my Stepmother). I blame him mostly though, he was my Father (I refer to him as Father or his name, "Dad" is an earned title) and had the responsibility to stand by me, I will never repeat his harmful choices and will be a much better emotional available and present parent from my experience.

That fact that you find meaning and solice in the lyrics means you have a soul, the thing John had pointed out on occasions. He transenderd different religions leading to people from these religions respecting him. The eternal light will always shine for people who never give up. My biological parents left my brother and I at 4, but we were adopted, although my adopted parents weren't perfect they still had love and believed . We have gone on to marry with children. John and Paul's best work were with the Beatles. As solo artists, in my opinion, John wasn't as good as Paul. I was surprised and dissapointed, but it is what it is. PLASTIC ONO BAND was highly personal and made at a time where he was very messed up and wrote and recorded for therapy. I can see that but it really isn't that great of a record. His singles were ultimately better than the albums.

Lennon wrote this while he was undergoing "Primal Scream" therapy, where he was dealing with a lot of issues that were detailed in the lyrics: He lost his mother at a crucial period in his life to a drunk-driving, off-duty policeman who ran her over in a crosswalk, and his aunt Mimi raised him, which explains the line, "Mother you had me, but I never had you." His father, a merchant seaman, left him for the sea and for work. "I wanted you, you didn't need me" explains his feelings about his dad. Lennon's primal screaming on this song expresses the pain of his childhood.

John was deeply troubled by his dad abandoning him, by his Mom leaving him at his aunt and by her death at the time when they finally started to bond. I can somewhat understand why he had so complicated relationships for so long. I was lucky to have both parents in my life and yet I still deal with feelings like that I didn't fulfill my dad's expectations, that I'm a disappointment for him, that my Mom never gave me a consoling hug, never said that I did something well etc. My self-esteem was badly affected, although I believe they didn't do it on purpose. God bless you, John.

first time listening to this in its entirety, I wanted to cry so bad but I guess I just couldn't, but I sat there all numb to the core and bearing an almost hollow expression. even though my earlier childhood was scarily similar, my parents separating when I was really young, as in toddler years (even so much as being called merciful), and then both of them being either physically, emotionally absent, or both for the years following… so I can't say this song didn't make me heavily moved in the notion of both absolute empathy and unending sadness. - someone who just got out of high school

@Scott McGinn John's parents abandoned him when he was only 5 and since the first 5 years of a person's life is crucial for things like character development (this is a fact, look it up) it probably, almost definitely, impacted him to do the same to Julian. Also, since his mother didn't try to become a part of his life until he was a teenager (15-16, don't remember the exact numbers), and got ripped away from him 2-3 years later, that probably caused him to him to try to mend his relationship with Julian when HE was a teenager as well (again, I think it was 15-16, dont remember the exact numbers) and like his own mother, got ripped away from the child he was trying to have a relationship with in 1980, 4-5 years after he tried to mend the relationship with the child he neglected for so long, just like his mother.

Being abandoned by his parents at five was bad enough. If you know the history of John, then you know that was just the beginning. His Aunt Mimi's husband who helped her raise John after his abandonment died when John was 15. His mother (who he began to establish a relationship with in his teens) was killed when he was 17. His best friend (Stuart Sutcliffe) died when he was 22. Brian Epstein who he was close to (despite his comments to the contrary) died when John was 27. Mal Evans who John was also close to (and possibly the only person John never spoke badly of other than Ringo) died when John was in his mid 30s, etc .....

Perhaps she was fucking up the live performances with her shrieks because... fame and public image had stolen John's life from him. She needed him to see that loving his family, his son, her, himself... would heal his soul. I had not see things this way. I don't even know if it's true, knowing very few details. But it is a good story. A sad story. It lends credit in my eyes to the idea that his assassination was convenient to those who needed to make an example of anyone trying to steer public thought towards love and peace. John's was a total rejection of status and pride, the two things that the State will always need people to have and be influenced by to keep its power over them.
