One word for that bride and groom: elope. That mother sounds like she was deliberately trying to make her daughter's wedding awful. What a piece of work.

This is a classic example of enmeshment and triangulation. Why didn't the brother, if he wanted to pay for the wedding for his sister, not just communicate with the sister and give her the money directly, or pay the vendors directly and give her the budget? These stories are just so sad! Glad the OP can laugh at it years later.

I asked my girls to consider a weekend in vegas, just them and their spouses. Return with a reception at a later date. They didn't go for it, but i think it was much less drama.

Twists, mom didnt control son's wedding or mom gets divorsed and remarried. The twist wasnt even on my radar!!

Was the bride very young? Yes weddings are expensive, but there seems to be a shocking lake of a backbone with the bride. Like I’m not sure how she walked down the aisle.

Oh heck naw. The first time she started with the “I’m paying for it” and the crocodile tears I’d have told her that she could pay for whatever she wanted but it wasn’t going to be my wedding and I’d get married in a judge’s chambers during a break for lunch before I let her run roughshod over me. Nope nope not a chance. There would be a better chance of me getting a natural tan and my hair spontaneously turning blonde without any external help before that happens. And considering that Casper the ghost has more color than me, that’s not happening.

My god mother was supposed to be the person who officated the wedding for my god sister but she was being sus beforehand. Day of wedding, I had to call her and ask if she was going to show up since hair and makeup was leaving in a few mins, she came and then tried to ruin her daughters dress which I prevented and so much more. Her and I are no longer on speaking terms but I'm chill with that, I still talk to the bride and her husband.

These people were far too immature to get married if they couldn’t shut that crap down right away. Or was it a cultural thing? Even if it was, there’s no excuse not to stand up for themselves to at least compromise on some things. I would have just eloped.
