Calling someone racist just because he/she doesnt speak a language you are comfortable with is not right. French is an official language of Canada and a large portion of their population speaks french. Even parliamentary debates and laws are either spoken or translated into English and French both. And I respect if someone is supporting their language and culture. You went to their country, its your obligation to either learn or respect their culture and languages.

As a tourist you should make an attempt to atleast use a few french words.. that will help. By already making an opinion about their attitude its you who is being seen as uncompromising. When i visited france i used some basic french phrases and then they started speaking bits of English to make it easy to converse. Many parts of india are the same. 🎉

I wish we could meet and I'd be happy to show you the true image of this city and province. They're not racist at all, they're just protecting their culture and language. I have been to Quebec so many times and I always try to use the little french that I know, I see the Québécois appreciating it. Although they are just trying to save their culture and they hate anglophones because of the history. They are just trying to save there culture unlike us who are forgetting our mother tongue & traditions and are leaning towards the west. Quebec is my favourite province among all of the Canadian provinces because of the infrastructure, food and the rich history.

I think our South Indian state's guys have same nature(Not all) . They are also racist. Example is I am a Maharashtrian, even if there is a single guy in our group who doesn't know Marathi we will talk in Hindi/English only even if we talk amongselve. In Quebec City and the countryside not all speak English. when she gave you the receipt, told you to see you again in French. First of all Indian English is difficult to understand for English speakers, but not a problem like people, who can speak English, but are not native speakers of the English language. In Montreal almost everybody speaks English and I lived there for 4.5 years. French pronunciation and grammar are difficult for most people. I sent my wife to a French language school, but she learned English there because other students spoke among themselves in English. when I studied French languages, only a few were able to learn, mostly Iranians and Arabs. The Spanish people spoke the French language like Spanish because basic verbs and words are very similar.

I live in Boston and i had more difficulty in there too. Toronto was much better. I went to Montreal in 1995 and i was lost for 10 hours since no GPS, to find my hotel . French in these two cities. It's racism, just like South Indians force everyone to learn Kannada etc, Hindi is understood by almost 70% of our population but South Indians, even knowing Hindi will never try to understand. And don't deny that most of the south Indians understand Hindi but willingly ignore north Indian Hindi speakers.

So I think they are absolutely right and have got every right to protect their mother tongue. In Punjab Punjabi is being killed by outsiders. Every establishment in Punjab is using Hindi cause outsiders are settling in Punjab in big numbers and now Punjabis are also thinking that this would kill Punjabi.

Thats not Racism. In Canada, French and English are both official languages. In Quebec it's French. Canadian Constitution is like that. Canada has alot French descendants and English descendants but both chose to retain their languages.
