May I also recommend the Wago 221-61x series lever nuts? The 221-41x series handles 24-12 AWG and 20 amps but the 221-61x series supports 20-10 AWG wire and 30 amps. I bring them up because the biggest Wago haters always fret over them melting down from a poor connection. (They don't, plenty of stress testing So if you show a friend one of those debunking videos and he's still not convinced, tell him to get the 221-61x series instead. Their internal conductors are 10 AWG, so if your buddy manages to melt one of THOSE, explain to him that he's an idiot-savant who somehow pulled over 30 amps from his living room outlets....and that he should probably get an electrician to figure out why his breakers aren't tripping.

Just a little tip. On your MacBook you can open 'System Information' and then scroll down to 'Power' and it will tell you the charging watts.

You are a dad to many of us. We appreciate your videos. My dad knew how to fix everything but he past away 3 years ago. Now I can't call him for help like I used too, so now I just watch my KZread dad. Thank you for the videos.

It is certainly using some power, but these cheap power meters lack the precision and resolution to show it, especially since the power factor in standby is often less than 0.1, meaning only a few percent of the power going in and out of the device is actually consumed.

Wagos are definitely a lifesaver, I had to install a new outlet that had 9 wires running through it & The 4 Holed Wagos made installation a lot easier.

I like the concept, and I'm sure that the price will become more reasonable after initial sales cover the design and marketing costs. Of course, now that Leviton has done the R&D, other brands are sure to follow, driving costs down further. If these get to a price point that is slightly above the cost of a 60W USB-C brick, I'm sure they will be more widely accepted.

A stand-alone good quality USB C 2 port 60 watt charger is $40, this is only about double that, for cramming it into the outlet and using more sophisticated circuitry because of the need to keep the heat generation down, the price isn't bad.

@@ericklein5097 The big problem is insufficient clearance between low and high voltage circuitry. This could easily work 100% fine for years, then one day when there's a lot of humidity in the air or a bit of dust falls in the wrong place, suddenly the mains voltage arcs over to the cable going to your phone. Hope you aren't holding it at the time.

I have two of the 30W outlets in my house (T5635), it's really handy being able to power a device with PD and still connect up to two AC cords. Now I'm considering upgrading one of them to 60W.

You can monitor it. Go to settings > General > System report > Power > AC power

That Klein outlet in the background is great. Got 2 of them ! Magnetic too.

Pretty cool and thanks for doing the leg work. I had to install a couple ceiling fans the other day and my dad is now a Wago convert, we had to re do a couple of connections with stranded and solid wire and he noted that the wire nuts would have shredded them on the 2nd or 3rd connection. (remote module didn't want to fit in the slot so we had to flip it twice). He was skeptical at first but the strip gauge and the ease of one-handed use, I think I'll get him a box for the next holiday.

FWIW, the Amerisense is in the UL database under "Ningbo Daiboer International Trading Co Ltd". Amerisense is their branding for the international market, I suspect. That particular outlet that you show is the "15A65W2C1A" model I believe.

@@OptimusSatanas Watch again. He hadn’t even brought up notebooks yet and the whole reason to say “device” instead was to make it more broad. Plenty of other USB-C devices don’t come with chargers. That’s half the point of standardizing and mandating it. It also wouldn’t make sense to imply that USB-C would only be used with MacBooks and Chromebooks.

Great stuff as always...consistently one of the best DIY channels on all of youtube... Quick additional note on "best practices" for electrical...Wagos are safe, solid, and time efficient...but put a quick wrap of electrical tape around the levers once the connections are made... This protects against any levers catching and being forced back open as you pack your connections back into the box to close things up... Also ALWAYS trim off old loops to guard against metal fatigue... Love this channel...

My wife is in the market for a new laptop, and USB-C charging is one of the features we are looking for... This outlet already has a place in my house where I would install at least one to plug the laptop in while she is working and not have to lug the brick around with her.

The secret sauce is GAN devices. Its a relatively newer type. Smaller in size and lower thermal footprint. You will start see more of these devices in market

Use an IR (infrared) thermometer. It reads temps with an aim/point infrared beam.

Excellent and solid demo information, well done sir. Also ideal for use with Windows based laptops too.

Leviton is a top knotch brand. I've only used that brand as it is readily available at local hardware store. Curious if there is an Eaton equivalent, as Eaton is also a top knotch brand. 🤔

To measure the very low standby power, you need a proper measurement device that can also integrate (for example GPM-8310). Although the measurement isn't super-important, as for good-quality chargers, it is less than 50mW usually, and it would remain irrelevant even if it was 100mW or 250mW. However, no particular test on output voltages is bad. I have multiple rather expensive chargers that internally only have one rail. Effectively it means that attaching a low-power device like a phone (5-9V typically) will downgrade the whole charger to that voltage, even on the secondary port. 9V is usually not enough to charge laptops at all. So in the end you get 18W, not 30W+30W.

Love the concept. Just wish a reputable company made a split circuit outlet with usb. That would be ideal for my situation.

I have three of them and I’m happy with them.

One thing I would recommend, even though it is UL approved, that means in any deep box, I would recommend the metal deep old work box, that way even more heat is dissipated, as that all metal band around the outlet is a heat sink and will help disparate the heat much more than possibly deteriorating or melting the cheap plastic boxes.

the reason they said these were impossible is actually the space required to convert to 60w DC however since then GAN(Gallium Nitride) Chargers have made their debut pushing 120w in the space of some 10-15w charger bricks

I have the Amerisense. Its UL listed, seems to work well so far.

As some people have previously stated, unless required by code for certain regions, it would be far better to use a metal junction box to help disappate the heat from the charger. As well, even though I dont disagree with the use of wagos, when installed properly a wire nut will give a bigger surface of contact between the wires allowing the temperature to be cooler at the termination point. If heat is the driving factor that is the better choice. However as this channel is geared more towards DIY advice wago is still a safe option for sure.

This is a good solution and I have installed several in my houses in key locations, however this is way over priced. $80 makes this the Ferrari of outlets and few of us will need such high performance. I get 3 packs of these that are maybe 30 watts and they are $20 for the three pack. I had problems with bricks and charge cords being lost then I labeled them and assigned them to my children to hold them accountable when they went missing. That helps with them being “lost”.

Hi Chris I’m in the Uk so this particular products didn’t apply to me, just wondered if this is a Gallium based charger as they are smaller and run cooler. Looked on the Leviton website but couldn’t see an answer. As always these things are built to a price point so I suspect not. Enjoying your channel content👍👍

I've guessing switching to gallium nitride was a factor in this. Vs silicon they can be right around 50% of the size, so that matches well with the prior max rating being 30watts

I love how you talk about losing the adapter and saying the outlet is 'pretty universal' and then cut to a shot with a hacked up kill-a-watt and the outlet bare wired on your desk like you're just going to throw that set up in your laptop bag and go :P I don't like the way the USB plugs in flush to the wall. Seems like a recipe for broken connectors/cables. Would have been better if they provided some protection by either recessing the port or making a guard that sticks out to protect the cable.

Thank you for posting, I didn't know Leviton had cracked the code! Bummer it's so big: my house has small boxes. I wish there were a version with the USB C on the bottom and a single outlet on top: should let the designers make it shallower. 90% of what I plug and unplug these days is some form of AC-DC converter :o

i saw a comment somewhere in here voicing anxiety about USB-C ports being obsolete in a couple of years. it's very likely that some future iteration on USB power delivery will allow for more power, but that's a totally different thing from the fear that these ports won't be usable in the future. the USB standard has been great about preserving backwards compatibility. if you have a USB cable from ~25 years ago, you could use it in a charger you buy off amazon today. i would be more worried about the ergonomics of the USB port being all the way back at the wall. i charge a lot of stuff by USB, but USB cables are often pretty short (there just isn't a super strong market for them to be very long, since a long power cord is a lot cheaper). most people i know use a USB power adapter that has a power cord attached to it that snakes its way back to the wall. that way, you can also put something behind it like a bookshelf or couch or something. this also introduces another fear: something knocking into the outlet from the side and breaking the USB cable. i feel like flat power plugs are really common, but i've never seen a flat USB charging cable. i've seen some cables that come out at an angle, but there would always be a conspicuous piece that could get caught if you sweep across it from the side or something. this kind of combo outlet makes a lot more sense to me in something like a countertop setup, or at an outlet that's at or above a desk tabletop. if you connect this downstream of a GFCI outlet in a kitchen, i bet this would be perfect for a lot of people.

I feel like... no matter what we do to upgrade our houses, the technology keeps changing to need further upgrades. First we got USB-A 2 watts. Then we got USB-A 2.4 watts. Then USB-A 3.0 watts. Then USB-C 2 watts.... etc. Now, we need GFCI in most locations, so replace your outlets again. And they made GFCI with USB-A ports. Then GFCI with USB-C ports. Oh and don't forget "now needs tamper resistant..." Then we have these with no GFCI but with high wattage and it's tamper resistant. 2 years from now the USB port will need to be tamper resistant. And then GFCI And then AFCI Then they'll design USB-E ports and we'll need 100 watt ports, but they won't be tamper resistant.... and the cycle starts all over again. I give up.

100W is the old limit, and 240W is the new USB-C power limit. I do NOT expect them to allow more power. (240W use 48V and I somehow doubt they will go beyond 50V) Besides, with more efficient lamps, laptops, phones, TV, e.t.c. I am not too convinced the need for high power will be that much around.

Unless you want to be tied to one outlet with your laptop, a brick is still better, since it can be used anywhere with a regular outlet. You will likely need a fairly long USB-C cord to use it as well.

If you have kids, those bricks get lost all the time unless you keep a close eye on the things. I installed a couple USB outlets at friends house because of this. Half the time the cables would be lost too, but there aren't many solutions for that.

Personally don't trust Anker anymore, considering what they and their subbrands have done. Probably fine if you just use stuff that doesn't connect to the internet, but when trust is breached it's awfully hard to earn back.

Wondering if it's safe to be both charging at the rated wattage as well as pulling 1200w from the outlet together.

Yes, pulling AC amps on a receptacle will only generate a small amount of heat from the resistance of the conductors. In comparison to the heat generated and dispated from the built-in rectifier, it's negligible

Don’t the charging bricks like the Apple one you showed have “intelligent circuitry” that helps regulate the power going into the laptop? Or is that totally handle by the laptop these days?

Usually both. A good device will have its own regulation. But great devices will communicate, like power deliver (PD) so full wattage, then slow, then maybe trickle. But devices without any smart future in either end will usually overcharge. Think bad vape devices.

The Leviton does not support PPS nor Samsung Super Fast Charging. Outlets are meant to last decades and this one is already obsolete. At $80 it's not a good value. A name brand TR outlet is less than $15. A name brand 60W+ PD/PPS compatible charger is less than $40. So unless someone needs a USB-C charger that's flush with the wall I'd suggest they stick to traditional USB-C chargers. I don't understand why houses are not wired with 48VDC with a central transformer in this day in age. Apart from appliances most everything uses relatively low power DC these days.

Leviton is always behind the times. Topgreener has had this for a while and has pps. They're always ahead of the competition and it's nearly half the price of this one

"you will always have solid wire in your walls" - not everywhere. Some jurisdictions require all wiring in conduit (Chicago for instance) in which case it will be stranded. But the Wago is the right answer even stranded to stranded, IMO.

It's USB PD, so yes. Not sure if 3.0 or not, which would support PPS if your phone has it.

I was very lucky, they had one on the Efixx channel and I did a Wago video for them two years ago that got millions of views. It was unsponsored, no money, etc. They wrote me about a year after the video and were super appreciative. I begged them for one of the models and about 6 months later it showed top in the mail! I put a little unboxing on my instgram. I told them they should sell them but I guess they are for marketing only

I see a lot of comments on Amazon that it does not work on all PD profiles. Apparently it gets even more unpredictable when plugging in two devices. This points to a deeper problem with adding sophisticated electronics that is outdated within 5 years to fixed outlets that normally last at least 20 years. Even though the USB-C standard plug is expected to be around for a long time, there are so many variations and changes in charging standards that future devices may not fully work. I would rather have my short-lived constantly updating electronics devices (including chargers) plugged in than integrated into the wall.

That's more a question about compliance. The power delivery standard likely stays for a long time. The manufacturer spesific charge protocols are best to ignore, so they don't manage to become common. Things like quickcharge, vooc, e.t.c. should not be supported, while the official one should!

why didn't Leviton throw their leverlocks (like on Decora Edge outlets and switches) on this thing?

I've had these new USB receptacles for awhile and they seem to be holding up well. My furnace went out and I had to use these on spliced 12AWG stranded CU to 10AWG AL running 1500 watts for many hours on 15A receptacle, they held up nicely for the 2 months we were running electric heat on high loads for many hours at a time. The ones I used are Leviton brand, but the regular usb ones. Never had any issues using them. I also inspected my Alumiconns after running those heavy loads, and no issues. I don't know about these newer USB C ones though.

I left it charging my ecoflow for 2 hours and the outlet felt warm but nothing crazy, I have felt hotter AC adpaters in open air. Leviton runs the massive risk of lawsuits if products fail and they need to test them in crowded boxes, different kinds oif walls, etc. So you have to put some faith in the certifications and company but I saw no issues with this at all.

I literally just installed a 30w USB C Leviton… yesterday… I didn’t realize they had a 60w… smh

Not all laptops can be powered with the USB C ports . There are high powered laptops that require 100 to even 200 watts when in use running high intensity apps. He only tested the wattage of a Mac Book in idle when it wasn’t processing anything. He should try it again while running Cinebench and see the wattage that it takes using the included power brick on the normal socket with a Fayleeko Power Meter or similar. The higher wattage are for high performance laptops with the top end Discrete GPUs (GeForce RTX 3080 or RTX 4080 and 4090).. Those would still need their own power brick.

Would that reveal anything new? The connected device knows max power (USB-PD involve negotating details), so the laptop/other would limit the power taken from it. Whatever more would have to come from other chargers or battery, or the machine would have to limit power.

I'm cheap, and $80 is a high price, but i will most likely put these in a couple of spots in the house where devices tend to congregate. If the price was around $50 i would install these in more places. I would risk a cheaper power brick outside the outlet and if it breaks or over heats i can unplug it and throw it out. Cant do that with an outlet and it's not worth the risk for a no brand name to live inside my walls.

Topgreener has had one out for a while now and it actually supports pps. Theyve always been way ahead of leviton and other brands with usb standards. Wish the mainstream brands would step up their game

Moving that fast means less testing, and more risks. Brands like Leviton want to be sure their devices, when placed into walls, will last like 20~30 years, and you can't do the testing to verify that right when the new standards come out. Meanwhile your random Chinese brands aren't really concerned about longterm support. A lot of them "go out of business" every six months or so. A few are more reliable, but for the most part they're all using the same part from the same factory with a different label. It's cheap as hell and can support the latest standards because the development turnaround is so quick, but every so often something will go wrong. It's all in how much risk you're willing to take. And for me, personally? If installed inside the wall I want as little risk as possible. But for something that just plugs in I'll roll the dice.

Seen them on Amazon before. My issue is the cost. It is the same cost as a mobile charger. So to put a $60 + outlet in that is stuck there does not help me. Maybe someone that goes between home and work to the same location with a laptop.
