I'd say maybe there wasn't as much variety, but the stark contrast between the two megahitter genres on the charts - pop punk/modern emo, and club/rnb pop - was very interesting and carved a very unique identity for the decade. Now, the 2010's? That's the most chart variety you'll ever get! The 2010's began with the EDM era realising its full potential, which was followed by and neck and neck with the folk pop boom, and steadily progressed into the dominance of rap and the charts' "dark" pop era, ending with the resurgence of disco pop/retro pop of all things and some of the 2000's pop punk trickling back into the mainstream! And then somewhere in between all of that, Simon Cowell's reality TV factory pushed out 3 of the biggest pop groups of all time, Rihanna became a billionaire, pop stars created new genres, the fusion of metal and pop started to spread its wings, and social media completely changed the game even after streaming, with forgotten hits, hidden gems of past chart heavyhitters, and fresh tracks from independent artists all finding their time to go viral every other week thanks to Tiktok/Instagram. To put it simply, the 2000's might be easy to form opinion on based on preference, but the 2010's was both a time for innovation AND tasteful nostalgic art :)

@t c I'd agree with you, it won't show as much variety as what was really around, but this isn't because those songs weren't big. I mean, there was still way more variety in the 2000's than this list shows, but it's taking the TOP songs, there are so many great songs in **every** era of music that just miss that top spot! Alot of UK acts miss that top spot too, so that also takes away a large portion of variety.

Ha ha 'the Ketchup song' from Oct. 2002 was running all over Europe during the summer - and everybody did the dance too - so fun lol - The song is about a man who enters a nightclub while singing and dancing. In addition to the original Spanish version, the song exists in a form with Spanglish verses, although the nonsensical chorus is identical in both versions. "The Ketchup Song" was released in 2002 and became an international hit the same year. :-) lol same goes for 'Dragostea Din Tei' from aug. 2004 - all of august and September that year Europe went wild with that song lol

Everybody in the comments saying the music died at different times but I don't believe it ever did. The problem is more that when we were young we only listened to music from local radio and bought CD's of music we already liked and kinda inherited our musical taste from friends and family. Now you can click on a button and be listening to any song from any genre at any time, coupled with the fact that anyone with a computer can create produce and release their own song from their bedroom means there is a lot more music about and more experimental music. Long story short there is as much good music released today as any other but it's hidden in a sea of music we wouldn't usually hear. Personally I think 60's 70's 80's are great for rock and pop, 90's are great for dance and trance.

The 2000s were great, just as any music era! It is simply that, the MOST most popular chart music was usually either one of two solid groups of music as you saw here :) Club songs, or the remnants of grunge going on to fuel pop punk/nu metal! So of course if you're not a fan of either of those camps, it is very easy to write off or of course people just simply may not like it because of the charts. And that's okay :) Although I will say, 2006 was a shockingly big year for some of the most memorable 2000's hits, I can't believe The Black Parade didn't show up but knowing how big some of those songs are does put it into perspective!

I was in school in the 2000s. Most of these songs were well known and repeatedly played on the radio but I think most of the songs we actually listened to or had on our phones, ipods or mp3 players did not make this list. It was also the era that piracy was at its absolute peak so I dont know what impact that may have had

i've just started watching you, but i do get the feeling you'd like mika's music. the singles from at least his first two albums were very upbeat and very pop (bar 2 songs) and grace kelly was everywhere in the uk for a while. i can almost guarantee that if you walk up to a 20-40 year old in the uk and go 'i could be brown', you're going to get it stuck in that person's head for hours if not days. it's catchy, man. his first album, life in cartoon motion, was so good. it had relax (take it easy), grace kelly, lollipop, love today, big girls (you are beautiful), happy ending (slower song compared to the others). his second album, the boy who knew too much, had singles like we are golden and rain which both honestly still hold up. blame it on the girls was on that album, too, but i wasn't a fan of that song so much. no one's fault, just not my taste. you seem like the kinda person who'd like his vibe, tho.

There are all kinds of genres not getting represented on that list. No "The Kills" -- a different band from the Killers -- or any lo-fi rock that was coming out, like the Von Bondies and White Stripes and all those genres that were rocking my world in the 2000s. So, same problem as the '90s list, it's really focused on the most commercial stuff.

Oh oh oh - regarding the song by Timberland 'The way I are' july 2007 - Timberland made a very cool version with a Danish band from Denmark/Europe (were I'm from) - U really have to check that one out - and in that version Nephew (the Danish Band) also mashed up one of their own songs called 'igen og igen og' but in an English version :-) the song to check out is this one 'Timbaland feat. Keri Hilson - The way I are -- NEPHEW REMIX' - copy the hole text and paste it in the top 🙂
