Most Popular Euphonium Military Band Excerpts

Музыка

Ever wonder what it takes to be a professional euphoniumist in a military band? Our Soldiers demonstrate many of the common musical excerpts found on these auditions, including portions of works specifically for concert band as well as orchestral transcriptions. We hope you enjoy the wide musical range of the instrument demonstrated by Master Sgts. Sarangoulis and Urquhart along with Staff Sgt. Nyren!

As a 21 year Veteran as a Euphonium player in the Army Bands, I TRULY appreciate this. Many might think something like Festival Variations is limited to the premier bands, but fun fact: 82nd Airborne Division Band Commander CW5 Doug Hammond (Retired) made this his GO-TO piece for many of our performances including one special occasion on field during a high-level change of command back in 1998 when I was there. I also remember being inspired by US Army Band Euphonium player Don Palmire as he offered to mentor me and give lessons privately, an awesome performer and an epic event organizer as, I finally obtained my C1 status and became a member of the Army Ground Forces Band. I was at the 82nd in 98-2000 and served alongside a then young SPC Scott McKenzie contemplated pursuing an Officer packet. He is now a LT COL I believe. Truly an honor and so many memories hearing this presentation and reminds me of so many memories. Thank you and keep them coming. 😎

I also play euphonium. A couple years ago, I was playing Second Suite in F and had the euph solo. I messed it up and was really disappointed in myself. Hearing that be the first song excerpt made me die inside lol. I simultaneously shut off my phone, took off my headphones, and swore out loud. Hah, very good euphonists though! Well done

This also happened to me in high school. I missed the partial jump from D to G and instead of the G (2nd fingering) played a C#. Most devastating memory of a high school concert.

Love low brass music. As a former tuba major years ago I can appreciate the time it took to perfect your playing abilities. My father was in the US 2nd Army Band in the 50’s. He played bass clarinet and bagpipes.

Patrick nailed the excerpts. He played everything exactly to what’s on the page. Very consistent with wonderful fundamentals. He sets the standard just like Dr. Bowman. I believe he won another premier job if I’m not mistaken. Any band is lucky to have and retain him.

It's one of those solos that seems easy on paper, but the intonation can be tough, as you hear any issues easily. It's not the hardest solo ever, but 2nd suite is such a popular piece that every Euphonium player should know it like the back of their hand.

Why is it so funny to me that there are professional military horn players? They don’t match the field anymore and signal route changes or changes of intention. Idk it’s cool as decoration.
