The defenses today are way more sophisticated. Whole teams load up on lbj. That dude bigger than everybody but bigs and more athletic than any at that time. Reggie Miller can kill but Lbj can’t? Mugsey bogues at 5’3 & couldn’t shoot played 14 yrs even averaged double figures a few years and mostly as a starter would not be getting any kind of burn today. The defense from the past would be getting smoked today. Most of the small forwards of the past couldn’t guard this much space meaning more pf’s & bigs couldn’t either. The best players of today were a myth in the past. Aint nobody ever seen a player punk lbj when there’s way more better players than ever but people swear up and down they couldn’t get with 20, 30 yrs before them. Based on what? Refs calls or non calls don’t make players or teams better on D or more physical. There’s more 5’8 and under players back then than ever who had success. Credit to them and mugsey was a beast but ya’ll really out here saying a 6’8 250-270lbs + more athletic than everyone except Wilt would have problems from the past? That makes no sense. The more they allow would help lbj not hurt him. A dude didn’t finish cause he didn’t bang. The game advances it doesn’t regress. Some of ya’ll get how the nba markets the game mixed up with skills. There’s no era where Melo, Kemba, John Wall and many others wouldn’t be starting. Mj himself actually admitted if he couldn’t force Lbj to shoot J’s there’s nothing he could do with him in the paint. Some of the worse teams of today would run some of the best teams from the past out the gym. Guarding more floor, more players that handle/shoot is harder not easier. If people described Lbj & players like KD & many others back then they would say that type of player would never exist. Mugsey 5’3, Mr Jennings 5’5, Michael Adams 5’7, John Bagley 5’8, Dana Barros 5’10. How these guys last if the nba had the type of D that some people are exaggerating on? No one can name 10 good/great defenses let alone 10 good/great physical defenses in any single year in the past but people swear the D was all that. Look at past games one day. These dudes load up n dudes, most teams able to switch everything, film study, etc. The past couldn’t do that and wasn’t doing that. I’ve asked this question to everyone talking about D of the past and I’ve never seen 10 teams listed cause there never was and that’s half the league. When refs let you get away with stuff that don’t mean you a punk. Name 1 player you ever see punk Lbi physically, Just one? The mentality was from the past stronger like everything from the past but these dudes and the future way ahead of the past and some players from the past admit while people that ain’t been in the league say what today couldn’t do. The skills and more players with skills, more players w/length that are guards would have the past getting smacked. You can always adapt to a ref’s whistle or lack of a whistle. You can’t make players guard in more space that can’t guard in space. Both those teams combined don’t have 8 dudes that can guard in space and that’s counting guards. They showed an old Mj bulls vs orlando game and dudes were getting 5 feet of space INSIDE the 3 line.

If I’m wrong my question should get answered with more than 10 teams but somebody would be lying or really don’t know what they’re talking about. There were 2 physical teams in Det & Knicks, u cam even add Miami but that’s a couple of players. Anybody that hoops knows refs don’t make you a physical player. They can allow more physicality but how the game is called doesn’t make players physical. You either are or you’re not. What star players have you ever see truly get punked in fact even non stars? Who has the game from the past been too physical for?

@middlfingazup2446 Today's defense is a total garbage. Players go on a 1 on 1 almost every time, and no one contested shots at the perimeter. BTW, defensive zones have been used at the NCAA for the last 6 decades. There is nothing sophisticated in today's NBA game. The reason for today's pace is the elimination of the hands check and the implementation of the 3 second rule. Today's NBA best player is one of the most unathletic players in history (Jokic). So your argument of athleticism is pure idiocy. In the 80s or 90s, small players such as Muggsy scored their points from mid range on open shots. In today's game, players such as JJ Barea was avg in double digits by scoring 50% of his pts on a 0-10 ft distance from the rim. Also, today's NBA avg height is lower than the 90s. Players such as K. Garnett, Duncan, Nowitzki, McGrady, Kobe, R. Allen played 2 to 4 years in the 90s. What makes you think that today's players are more athletically? That's the dumbest argument someone can bring.

@@jorgedelgado8177 Lol, today’s players are best equipped to play outside the 3 line on in. The past most sf’s couldn’t guard 3-line on in. The other day they showed an old bulls/Magic game you can see guys getting 5 feet of space INSIDE the 3 line. These defenses are way more sophisticated but the problem is people don’t want to acknowledge there’s way more better players than there’s ever been by far. The teams from the past could not come today and be better than they were defensively by guarding more floor, more spacing, more players on the floor that will handle as well as shoot, that makes no sense. The past didn’t even have many small forwards that could guard in space or on the perimeter which is why outside of the 15 big guards back then you had to put a smaller guard on Mj. There’s 6’8, 6’9 even 7 footers who can guard in space. I keep asking people take any one single year from the past that had 10 very good defenses but instead of those people waking up to facts they just ignore and say things. The defenses from the past would get cooked more than the defenses of today. In 1996 when the bulls won 72 games they had 2 dudes who could guard in space, Rodman who could guard certain players in space and Randy Brown who didn’t play a lot. You can add Ron Harper but he was only playing 20 min a game in the finals so he couldn’t do much having to guard more floor more spacing. Mugsey Bogues who couldn’t hit the side of building averaged 10 a game 3 separate yrs while being a 28% 3 pt shooter. Credit to him for getting to the league and his shooting improved some but they tell people good offense beats good defense in hoop but ppl still keep trying to preach defense of the past but like I said can’t name 10 very good defenses in any single year. These teams today would go to the past and get to guard less space less floor, less guys on a team who will shoot, less guys on a team on the floor that will handle, far less athletes. They couldn’t beging to guard players that they’ve never imagined back then. Offensive players like Melo, Kemba Walker, JWall, Russ and many more would still be on squads today not getting squeezed out of the nba. How many Small forwards of the past were really truly out on the perimeter “D’ing” people up? Too many people stuck in the past trying to act like it was more than what it was cause they prefer it. Even the best defensive teams ever will never become better by guarding more floor, more spacing, more shooters on the floor, more ball handlers on the floor. Anybody that’s hooped and/or being real this is common sense. Today SF’s can guard in space, PF’s can guard in space, Even some C’s can guard in space so if they can’t according to many people then how can players who couldn’t guard in space do it? Give me some facts like I’m supplying or go talk that to people who don’t know the game and/or never played.

@@MakeItTooBigToRig Like Phil said about Pippen, "He's a sometimes shooter. Sometimes they go in..." But I believe Scottie started listening to the LeBron sheep and felt the need to attack Jordan in order to get some shine on his book. Whatever happened behind closed doors in their careers is only known to them. But I know for a fact Jordan never called Scottie out while they were playing together. But I'm sure Scottie didn't notice that as he never gave Jordan condolences when his father was murdered either.

What gets lost is the Knicks had a REALLY good team! In 92 they went up 1-0 and almost forced a game 7. In 93 they went up 2-0 and yet the Bulls were still able to claw back overtake them and win. You could feel the air go out of MSG after game 5 in 93.
