The biggest problem is that the barriers go down long before a train even turns up,the locals know there's no risk crossing against the lights,so they will continue to do it. All the crossings around here are like that,there was a time when the barriers came down moments before a train passed,so people were less likely to chance their luck.

I personally don't have a problem with the barriers being down for a few minutes at a time. But then again that's because I know that modern trains are generally bigger, heavier and faster than they've ever been before and as such, may require more time for the driver to react to a hazard on the track and stop the train safely.

If the barriers forget to raise which I highly doubt that it will because of the cctv cameras, here in the US, one of the crossings near me tends to malfunction a lot because of it stuck down for a period of time

Yeah they would. It doesnt look like theres space for a fully accessible Bridge with steps and ramps. It also seems like lowering the railway or the high street to create an underpass isn't a suitable option either currently

And because the crossing is monitored somewhat 60 miles away in Basingstoke makes no difference on monitoring and operating the barriers. If there was a Signal Box right next to the crossing the misuse would still continue and the Signaller wouldn’t be able to stop this if they were there by the crossing itself..

ONE MORE THING BTP AND NETWORK RAIL SHOULD MONITOR THE LEVEL CROSSINGS AT BOTH SIDES TO STOP MISSUSE AND TRESPASS.PEDESTRANS AND MOTORISTS SHOULD GET A BIG FINE FROM NETWORK RAIL AND BTP.

WEIRD... In the USA you get 20 seconds between the time that the gates go down and the train passes the intersection, usually at 50 - 80 mph.

Half barrier crossings in the UK operate similar to railroad crossings in the USA, as they are fully automatic. However, the UK also has full barrier crossings like in this video. These crossings are manually controlled and monitored either from a signal box or via CCTV. Trains can only proceed across if the the crossing has been confirmed clear of obstructions once lowrered. That's why it usually takes a few minutes for a train to pass at these crossings.

Was last there back in 92 as a teenager when the slam door class 421s 423s ruled the line and the 442s were brand new, intercity holiday makers with a class 47 heading would come and go class 33s were a regular visitor back then to.

I'm making a transformer based on one of the south west trains and was thinking about the alarm that goes off when a train is nearby and it's been circling in the back of my mind for a while

I have been to Poole before and went over this crossing to get to the town centre so for me this is a Level Crossing of great interest because of it being a crossing for Pedestrian's rather for Cars/HGV's etc. Great Find. Keep it up.

Years ago, before the shopping centre was built, that was a normal road, open to traffic. Only the very end of the High Street near the Quay has not been pedestrianised.

I found a video from the 1980s showing Poole as a road crossing. Interesting how it became pedestrianised when the shopping centre was built, although back then constructing an alternative means of crossing the railway probably wasn't desirable

With over 4 minutes between the crossing starting to close and the train crossing the road, I can understand why people would want to cut across!!

It's the way full barrier crossings are operated in the UK. They are linked with the railway signalling system, and these crossings have to be confirmed clear before a train is allowed to proceed past. Therefore, a train could be a few minutes before it passes. This isn't the case for half barrier crossings which are automatic, just like Railroad crossings in America.

The level crossing itself is NOT dangerous at all!! It’s the road users (pedestrians) that are clearly at fault. The alarms, flashing lights and barriers all work correctly..

Mark Schroeder, when I went to Basingstoke PSB back in 2013/2014 the Dorset Coast panel was installed but sadly it wasn’t operational. I saw the crossing controls for Poole LC ready for when Basingstoke was going to take control of it. I’ve been working with level crossings for 23 years and the stuff I see what the public do misusing crossings is crazy. Take care :-)

No, not 24/7, as this high street isn't very busy before 10am or after 5pm. Police presence would perhaps reduce the number of people crossing on red lights though 🤔

They could have just used a green/red light thing... *nvm thats a bad idea*

How about automatic elevators on each side with a top platform? Crossing activates and so do the lifts. They see-saw up and down for counterbalance... ...just ideas, I'm no engineer...

There would probably need to be steps in addition to the lifts in the case that one of the lifts was to fail. Also, the lifts would need to be quite large and spacious as a lot of people use the current footbridge when the crossing is lowered. There's not enough space for both of these things with adequate proposals so for now the crossing will remain as it is with the current footbridge in place I assume.

Yes! Poole 👍😁! One of my favourite LC's in the UK, but it still amazes me how reluctant people are to use the footbridge that's there, as it seems they'd rather hold up the rail traffic and make the barriers continuously hangman like that than take a slight detour and climb a few steps (although if they can't use the footbridge, they should just wait, but they still dont!) 🙄. It's quite a lot busier in this video than when I was there last, but I guess that was because I filmed all my videos before 10AM lol. Brilliant video, UKLCC!!!

Thanks! 😁 Yes, the notorious and infamous Poole crossing, well known for its common misuse. Idk why people can't wait. Maybe conduct a survey and find out why people would not want to wait or cross the footbridge. I wanted to make the most of it, so filmed during the busiest times (early afternoon).

The bridge can get a little crowded sometimes from my experience, lots of people using it. But the crowds can just block the access to it as well.

Thanks 🙂 They more than likely can't do this, as it will effectively cut the high street in two. The footbridge there currently is way too small and not accessible (no ramps for wheelchair users). Therefore, not much can be done really, well at the moment anyway. A large scheme to replace the crossing with suitable a alternative would be required.

I have walked that way when thought I didn't know how else to get to the high street haha. As it happens, you can walk through the Dolphin centre to get to the high street.

When I heard that jazzy music playing, I thought that you added it into the video as a "tut tut" to those idiots who misused the level crossing. But apparently it was some dude playing his horn in the street.

Poole is known officially as one of the most misused in the country I believe. You'll probably find that slightly more people misuse this crossing over a single day than at Lincoln High Street.

Idk - well it doesn't help that there isn't an easy solution or alternative to this crossing, given the small space of the footbridge in the shopping precinct. A subway would be too costly and also not enough space. For now, awareness of risk is the focus at the moment.

If not, a new footbridge with elevators could be provided, using the crossing space itself rather than to the side (the crossing equipment being removed). The best solution would be to put the railway in a cutting with the high street passing over on a bridge.

The level crossing is not broken. Level crossings in the UK are usually closed for 3 minutes before a train appears.

@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel 3 minutes should be the longest length of the train crossing phase for a 5 carriage train. Most gated pedestrian crossings in Auckland, NZ are closed for 2-3 minutes when a commuter train goes through.

@@xandercage2388 We have some crossings like that, although they only have half barriers on each side so that the exit route is always open. The reason for that is that the train would take well over 2 miles to stop in some cases (in the UK we have trains going over crossings at up to 125 MPH) and 30 seconds at 125 is just over a mile away from the crossing - IE the train can't stop if there's an obstruction. Most of our crossings are manually controlled full barriered and the signals can only be cleared when the barriers are down. To drop them 30 seconds before would mean the trains would slow to a crawl or even stop before they could be let across (the signal immediately before the crossing would be at danger and up to 2 others behind would be showing a caution aspect - meaning slow down). There's the issue. Do you give fast passenger trains the priority (as is done now) or vehicles? As many passenger trains carry hundreds of people compared to a typical vehicle being able to seat 5 but only having a driver I would support sticking with prioritising the train.

Yeah, I am too. However, for this crossing to be suitably closed, an alternative route over the railway must be made which is accessible and step-free, and this is difficult given the space.

Dodgey884 Your attitude is typical. I seem to remember commenting on another video about this crossing and it was plain to see it needs to be removed for safety. Far too many idiots get stuck and cross when they shouldn’t! Disability is unfortunate, but the safety of the railway is and always will be absolutely paramount!
