As a fellow small business guy, I'm totally on board with his buy local message. And remember - if you go to a small business like this because of the wealth of knowledge and expertise they offer, then please buy your gear there! If you just go and buy it online to save a couple of bucks and treat them like the public library getting free information, then places like this eventually go away and everyone loses.

I love that you are so friendly with the sport you don't see that with. Roadies most of the time it is very aggressive

My good friend is starting a bike shop in New Jersey and this was the perfect watch for him. We have had many conversations about being able to help riders out on the spot with basic problems. This is surprisingly something most shops are not willing to do. Thank you.

The passion in Troy's voice speaks volumes, so knowledgeable in all things mountain biking, made me realise the importance of supporting small businesses, they don't create customer service as these guys do. Wish you even more success in the future.

Was there just over a year ago - they took care of us so well - trail advice, a warm welcome, just as happy to talk for 10 mins over a gel purchase as sell you a 5K trail rig. LOVE THEM. If you're ever there, put some dollars in the tin for the trails builders.

2nd time at Fruita a group of us met a guy nicknamed Maximilian (aka Max). Max worked at this same iconic shop and within a few minutes we had plans to ride Lunch Loop trails with him and shuttle the next day. The night after our awesome ride, Max and our group went to all the bars in town, while Max sported a full captain's cape around his neck (I think it was pink) and the fun continued. Super friendly people that just want to have a good time and want the same for visitors. Great memories and I hope to return with the family someday. Keep it real Fruita!

We are with you all the way Troy and we can only wish to achieve what you have in 20 more years (we are 5 years in so far). Respect!

Wow, this was honestly a great video! Troy seems like such an awesome guy. I really dig his overall outlook on mountain biking, but more importantly community and people. These are the kind of people/places we need more of in my opinion, and why I love supporting my local shops. Fruita honestly wasn't high on my list of destinations for riding, but I'll definitely be moving it up and when I go I'll be stopping by Over the Edge to support them!

Went to Fruita on our honeymoon, we left right after I crossed the finish line at the Chequamegon Fat Tire Fest. My bike got a little trashed in the race and OTE fixed it in less time then it took us to walk to the liquor store to get some beers for the campsite!

Wow.. this guy is rad! I hope shops like this will be around for a long time. Support your locals not your corporates.

Online deals are great and all, but nothing beats a brick and mortar bike shop. I got into Mtn biking in early 1992, went to Moab in '94, and remember hearing about Fruita in I believe 1996. Hope to one day make it there and back to Moab in the future. You have to love Troy's attitude and love of cycling, that's what draws people to shops like that.

I love this guys philosophy I dont wanna drop names but riding mtb the past 20 years ive meet a lot of people including bike makers, there was this guy who just likes biking and welding stuff so he just randomly started welding bikes then some guy like it and it boomed. i mean literally everyone can make a bike now with just a cheap welding machine and some tubes. i even see bamboo bikes now. If you love it just do it and people will surely support you.

I didnt realize how Iconic this spot was, was there last month rented a bike for the day as I am just getting into the sport and earlier this week called the store to purchase a bike that they are holding for me until I get back in the area, could have bought elsewhere but something about this place I wanted to buy from them. still an awesome shop in 2023!

This was the last bike shop we were in before shit hit the fan and the world went covid crazy. Had to fly back to BC the next day to make sure we got home. This shop was historic to say the least. Loaded with merch and customer service like no other LBS I've been to. We will be back when when sanity returns.

I was there for the first time in 1996. I also went to the first 7 or 8 fat tire festivals

Shimano airlines shifting. OMG! I've been riding for 40 years and remember all of that stuff, but even at the time I never understood why they wanted to complicate shifting like that. It had a pressurized can that would allow you to shift, but when that can ran out, so did your shifting.

Awesome interview and history. Big thanks to Troy and OTE for further putting mountain biking on the national map and in the face of land managers. He's done an amazing job with making Fruita a true destination town now. I have yet to visit. It's such a shame that the same respect hasn't been given in many other public areas around the country. Specifically, the SF Bay Area, the birthplace of the mountain bike. Marin Co. is unbelievably anti-bicycle. The self-proclaimed "environmentalist" hikers DRIVE to the trails and then complain about cyclists using public lands. How's that for hypocrisy! And other counties and cities aren't much better. I was riding Bay Area trails BEFORE the single track was restricted to hikers. When prohibitions went into place, I assumed it would be short-lived. Or at least if the sport gained popularity, prohibitions would fall. Nope. Still in place in most locations. Even after land managers conceded the fact that bicycles do not cause erosion like was previously assumed, prohibitions remain. This is absurd and the result of bias and entrenched interests. Mountain bikers outnumber many other user groups (especially equestrians), yet find the fewest trails open to their use. If conflict is a problem, then provide more trails, perhaps EXCLUSIVE trails to cyclists. They say that's unreasonable. So they lump everyone together without expanding trail networks. And then wonder why conflict exists. And from an environmental and climate-change perspective, you don't have another sport that offers what mountain biking offers: the sustainability aspect. What other sport gets people out of their cars, out of plague-ridden subway trains, and free of transportation energy needs? The bicycle. A mountain biker is far more likely to embrace bicycle commuting than a football player, or any number of other sporting activities. This is an aspect that mountain biking advocates should exploit: we're a transportation solution, healthy lifestyle choice, AND a great sport. And about OTE Fruita... THAT is how you start and run a profitable and successful bicycle shop: buy the property when it's feasible and own it! That, however, takes some serious luck and prescience!

This is awesome! I have worked in bike shops for years. There was nothing more I loved better than having a new rider come to my shop and I help them pick out their first bike, let them know about all the things I know, then seeing them come back in 3 months later telling me how much they love cycling. There really are some things you can't get online, and one of them is service. I have also seen the impact that the internet has had on small businesses like bike shops. We don't do it because we want to be rich, we do it because we love cycling, and want to share that love with others, even triathletes. (just kidding, I hate triathletes) ( seriously though...I hate them) ( no for real, they are just customers.....that think they are the most important and have to tell everyone about their training) (ok, if they have money, I like them)

@@joelanaba9460 The first thing you need to do is decide what type of riding you want to do, and what type of bike you should get. There are many different types of mountain bikes and there are many different types of full suspension bikes. Not brands, but types. Some bikes are meant for steep, rocky descents others are meant for racing, and others are for all around riding. A basic full suspension bike, that would be worth riding, is going to start around $1800. If you buy something cheaper it's going to be cheap and not worth the trouble. You would be better off buying a hardtail for $800-$1200. I would say look for a good used full suspension, but if you don't know about bikes it is extremely hard since you wouldn't know what to look for, and you wouldn't be able to tell how much repairs it needs. Your best bet if you want to get into the sport is find a friend that knows about biking and have them help you. If you don't know anyone, then start reading about bikes online. There are a few good mountain bike web sites that will explain what to look for, and help you decide what bike to get. When you are ready find a local bike shop and go in there. Don't go to a big box store and try to buy a bike because they have crap and they don't have people that will help you. Local bike shops have people that will want to spend time to help someone like yourself. Good luck.

Finding a shop that fixes while you wait, is getting more and more difficult. The last good mountain bike I bought, was because someone stole my other good one. I got flats in the same tire the first three times out. I hadn't even gotten off the pavement yet. (still fine tuning it) I took it back to where I bought it and asked to talk to a manager. Explained the situation, hoping to get it looked at. He wanted me to buy a $50.00 flat fix plan, and leave it for a few days until they had the time to get to it. I had never bought a bike there before, but I had bought mt. bike clothes, pedals, helmets, racks, pumps, and locks. No more will I darken their doorstep. They are very high volume, so they will not miss me, nor I them.

Within the first five seconds you could tell that this man is kind, gentle, generous and enthusiastic. How the hell did he ever make a business work for that long? (-;

Damn this is the kind of shop i need in my town.I gave my bike to my local shop for the maintenance of my fork and they keep it 2 months.....plus i'm not sure they even disassemble it ,i suspect they just clean the outside and pumped some lubrificant through the seal kit ......
