Most Common British Birds & Birdsong Identification
Narration and Information from here: www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/bird-s...
In the UK you can generally hear birdsong all year but what species you hear singing and how much will vary depending on the time of year and hour of the day. Whether you live in the city or the countryside, there is usually a lovely chorus of birds to enjoy. It’s easy to just sit back and allow their beautiful song to take you away to nature's paradise. More often than not, you hear birds but you don't see them. Wouldn't it be amazing to hear their song and know the species? Even to know what the call means? Identifying birds is so much fun and is a great tool for helping wildlife.
The UK has a wide variety of birdlife as it contains important breeding and wintering sites for many species. Birds that have been recorded in a wild state in Britain are included on the British list. Some breed here in the millions whereas others may have only been seen here once. The British list is maintained by the British Ornithologists Union (BOU) and as of June 2021 the British List stands at 626 species.
Bird song or call?
Birds that produce songs are known as songbirds and although most bird species around the world make some sort of call fewer produce songs. A song is probably the most familiar type of bird sound. Songs are the tuneful vocalisations made throughout the day, especially in the morning. The songs are more often sung by male birds marking out territory or trying to attract the attention of females.
The dawn chorus is an intense period of birdsong, which starts about an hour before sunrise, begins around March, and continues to July, corresponding with the mating season.
It's also not unusual to hear birdsong throughout the night, particularly the robin.
Most common British birds and their songs and calls not in order:
Wren
Wood pigeon
Gold finch
Blackbird
Collared dove
House sparrow
Blue tit
Great tit
Starling
Song thrush
Chaffinch
Robin
A report in 2020 on bird populations by the British Trust of Ornithology has revealed the UK’s most common birds, it suggests the wren has become the UK’s ‘commonest bird’, with over 11 million pairs. In second place was the robin, with 7.35 million pairs, the third was the House sparrow: 5.3 million pairs and Woodpigeon: 5.15 million pairs with Chaffinch and blackbird: 5.05 million pairs (each).

I recently oved to a very rural area of England and have become obsessed with birds and birdsong. I see Red Kites, Buzzards, numerous types of finches on long dog walks. I have rekindled a childhood passion for birds since moving out of the city. I had forgotten just how wonderful our avian friends are.

A very informative video Abbie, I really enjoyed it. We always look out and listen for the birds when walking in our local park. Just a couple of things to add for people who are getting into birdwatching, please, please, please don’t use the netting type feeders as the birds can get their feet tangled in the netting. The RSPB are trying to get them banned from sale. If you put up bird feeders, ensure you clean them out regularly with water to avoid disease.

Thank you. It was beautiful. Now UK parks are full of life. When I walk there, I can hear so many birds. It is just wonderful. But, in fact, I just recognize 1 or 2 ;-). It is difficult and I think- you have to be a master to recognize their singing. I've also heard that birds that live in the city are trying to be louder now because of streets noise.

robin in greek is called as redthroat(actually is orange not red:P) kokkino(red) laimis(throat), stonechat is called mauro(black) laimis(throat) all together maurolaimis due to his black throat in fields clasically as you know him there, redstart is called here kokkino(red) tailed(ouris) kokkino-ouris due to his red tail, some of our birds in my language, about collared dove, its have been said that it have 18 tails here in greece this bird is called as dekaoxto(number 18 in greek) and tail(oura) all together deka oxtoura) and except from the fact that im saying above, this bird seems to say the number 18 to its call(in greek language it absolutely matches) thats why gave her this name. many other people reproducing nightingales and goldfinches a beautiful hobby) one guy in my town reproduce robins thats all as a p.s~!
