Mosquito Pass Trail on KLR650 | The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
Ойын-сауық
Riding our Kawasaki KLR650 Adventure Bikes we take on Mosquito Pass
Mosquito Pass is one of the highest mountain passes in the state of Colorado.
Located between Leadville and Alma Colorado. It’s a dangerous route that can only be accessed by an unpaved 4×4 road nicknamed “The Highway of Frozen Death”.
The summer journey through Mosquito Pass requires a challenging route full of steep grades and narrow cliff faces. The pass had a rich history long before any modern road was established.
Famed Methodist clergyman and Colorado pioneer Father John Lewis Dyer is one of the first known people to cross Mosquito Pass. Back in the 1860’s, Dyer was known to cross the pass several times per week, even if it required snowshoes, in order to spread his religious message.
As the silver mining in the area grew throughout the 1870’s, Mosquito Pass saw frequent use by local miners. The Mosquito (also known as Alma) Mining District became extremely popular with its rich minerals and location to Arkansas and South Platte rivers. Much of the remains can still be seen today.
In 1879, the extremely treacherous mountain path through Mosquito Pass became a toll road which charged stagecoaches, freighters, and wagons headed to Leadville. Modern construction for what remains a dangerous, unpaved route began in 1949 and grew in popularity for those traveling by burro.

I love how you keep switching back and forth between the views on both bikes
Now that's an adventure. Looks like quite the day and a workout. Thanks for sharing. Ride safe 👊👍🇺🇸
Well done to have achieved that challenging ride- beautiful scenery. Noted that you and your dad sat down on your bikes for some difficult terrain. ADV 101 suggests to stand on the bike and use your natural body torque to approach such difficulty. I'm a KLR rider and would definitely have been standing on most of those ascents. Just sayin.
Bylat, that was awesome
Wow incredible views as well. Riding along that edge looked sketchy.
nice chasing
Such a great video. I would be so worried about doing that on my main bike. I think I lived someplace like that, I would have something just for days like this. Fund adventure, thanks for sharing.
Big like 20❣️❣️ great sharing dear friend 💖💖 super video 👍🏻
I need a nap watching you two muscle your way there, and picking up the bikes, but OH SO BEAUTIFUL AND WORTH IT. Well done
Wow, Wow, Wow!! So incredibly rugged, and so spectacularly beautiful!! WAY beyond my skill level, kudos to both of you for doing that!! Great video!!!!
You gotta get your Dad some bark busters before he breaks a lever out there. But dang, that scenery!
Man, stunning views! Totally worth the climb! ✌️
Wow! Worth the hassle!
Well done! Great video. Will love to ride it myself!
Gotta hand it it to ya. Klr650 all the way

oooo dbaaaa awesome trail road
Cool ride. That is an old air compressor. The electric motor rotor with its stator, less copper windings like you pointed out.
Had some cool sites on the way up and the views are amazing!!! Now if they’d only pave it so I could ride it😂!!!
Wow, seems like you are at the end of the Earth
You are to hard on your Dad, that being said awesome job especially on KLRs
1:57 it was bound to happen… 🤪
Damn. Them rocks have to be exhausting. Do you have to remain in the trail or are you allowed to take the side in the grass / brush?

It’s National forest, you should stay on the trial. No one is around to enforce those rules most of the time.
Interesting to hear you say that you have more control heading down the mountain, is that a widespread belief amongst the ADV fraternity, or is it a personal thing?

Might just be a personal thing. The 650 is a heavy bike for this type of trial as well
Question…what counter sprocket did you utilize on the KLR’s and did you do any carb rejecting for altitude on them. Been over that pass several times in Jeep and older carbureted ATV’s with rejetting.

The rear sprocket was 2 plus from stock. Can’t remember the exact count. I assume the previous owner had to of had it rejettted since I have never had any issue at high altitude
Do you guys have thermo bobs on your bikes?

No
I want to go ride next month some of the passes in Colorado, I am not an expert off-road rider by any means. I was planning to take this pass on my KTM 1190, but it looks like a very challenging pass. I know you ride off road all the time. Do you think it is easier or harder on the 1190 than the klr.
@AdventureTomek

Harder on the 1190. Many because I tip toe on the 1190. Mosquito pass is very challenging due to the loose rock surface, if you stop or get stuck in the wrong spot very hard to get moving again on the larger bikes

@Adventure Tomek Yeah, I will definitely pass on the mosquito pass

Get out of the saddle, stay loose, have a good attitude and commit. That 1190 will crush that pass...
Great video! I see you guys out there struggling manhandling your bikes. Don’t kill yourselves; “let the horse pull the plow”. But thanks for the video nonetheless 👍
