Mortimer Ghost Town in North Carolina
Once a thriving lumber town in the early 1900's it was devastated by a fire and flood in 1916 and once again in 1940. The area today is part of Pisgah National Forest and nature is reclaiming much of the place. Wilson Creek is a nice place to take in the nature and with an array of outdoor activities to do. As I roamed around the area I could see traces from the old town. Check out the links to learn more on the history: www.appalachianhistory.net/201... web.utk.edu/~jeparks/history.htm

My father was in the ccc camp here at Mortimer, and he also worked at the smokies, camp 19 before the war started.
The concrete walled buildings are the remains of the cotton mill built by A. M. Kistler and others, Kistler being a business man from Morganton after they purchased much of the land from Ritter Lumber Company. The mill brought life back to the community for a while. Steam was used to operate the machinery (spindles) in the factory. The 1940 flood destroyed the facility. A. M. Kistler is the one whom Kistler Memorial Highway was named (Old NC 105) that goes from Linville Falls off Hwy 183 to the Longtown Community on Hwy. 126 which was previously part of the Yellow Mountain Road used by Patriots on their way to the Battle of Kings Mountain. The CC Camp built many of the mountain roads in the cummunity in the 1930s. Many of the Rittler employes lost their lives during the logging operation.
That old building is the remains of the old textile plant that used to run there it wasn't just a floods that took out Mortimer all the landslides from The heavy rain played a role in it to my grandfather told me about that place
You're missing lots of places where old cc camp buildings steps and walls are still there from where the hospital was .Also the town of Edgemont just up the river having a old store and church still in use today. I travel these roads about every week and live in the area now after retiring from the Army.

@@jenniferhopper8817 The old hospital was where the picnic shelter is near the roadway, the steps and wall are still there today! Across the road from the shelter is a parking lot down from the main road, if you park there and take the trail through the field you'll see a beach great for swimming, also the old train crossing pillars are there.
This is Wilson Creek Gorge .. the state stocks it with trout .. many people swim here in the summer .. Spent many days enjoying it
My family has history up there. My great great grandfather and grandmother are buried in Maple Grove cemetery, not far from Mortimer. Other relatives are buried in Mortimer Cemetery. Haven't been up in some years, but I love the area.
6:25 the building was used for some kind of cotton production
Ghost Town ! My favorite, lol, well might as well get to the ghost town resident at 6:35 see the white light anomaly shoot straight down towards you, at first thought it was a bug but its not ?
I love this video. Its an absolutely gorgeous area and the ruins were fantastic. However, 4 words came to mind....rattlesnakes, copperhead snakes and tics. 😟
My father worked at the ccc camp there before ww2 started then he joined the navy. I am trying to find out if he was there during the flood.

Joe - As always, great video! Did you see any ticks? I had tick anxiety as you were walking through the grass. Mortimer is just up the road [30-mins] from where I live. I have seen more ticks hiking in NC than when I hike in FL. Do you come across many ticks in FL?

Ticks are hit and miss in florida ime. If there are deer in the area, then there will be ticks. I hate ticks!

Oh man you have no idea how many ticks there are where I live in CT!!! I got Lyme Disease in FEBRUARY!!!! I wasn't as protected as I would normally be because it was still so cold but I guess the little nasty things are better in cold than we thought! I hate them too!
Going up there this weekend for my birthday. How exactly do I get to where you are in the video? Is this the lost cove area trail
