My assumption would be long-term disability insurance. Something to keep his salary coming in when he couldn't work.

Truly inspiring story, thank you for sharing! I had a health scare recently and had a revelation. While I was in the emergency room, I realized that those silly calculations of paying off mortgage vs. investing, my Coast FI number, the compound interest calc, net worth statements etc. were all vain. All I wanted to do was set up our finances in a way that if I die, my family would be fine even if they don't want to manage the finances in the way that I do. It doesn't matter if my mortgage interest was 6% and I could achieve 10% in the market... I wanted my family to be debt free and not worry about a thing if I suddenly die. When I got home, I immediately knocked my mortgage down from 30 year to 10 years by making a lump sum payment. I'm now looking to take out a 10 year term life policy to further protect my family. Once the mortgage is done, then we're fine.
