Mortar Mishap Kills Seven Marines During Night Fire Training

This week’s Urban Valor episode features Marine veteran, Roy Mcquaig. Roy grew up in South Georgia and passed on a full-ride golf scholarship to join the Marines. His town thought it was so crazy the local news station wrote a story on it.
Roy enlisted into the infantry as a rifleman and served two tours to Afghanistan and one tour to Kuwait, all during his first enlistment. He experienced a traumatizing training incident in which a mortar mishap left 7 Marines dead and 8 more injured.
One of the Marines died holding Roy’s hand. Roy leaves us with how his military experience affected his transition out of the Marine Corps, and how picking back up his passion for golf has helped keep him pushing forward.
Urban Valor was created so veteran could share their stories. Our veteran interviews are designed to allow the veteran to share however they wish. In doing so, we're able to develop discussions and bring awareness to veteran mental health like PTSD, veteran homelessness, veteran transition, and so much more, while also highlighting the benefits and values developed and instilled in these great men and women by our military.
Urban Valor works hard to give as many veterans a voice as possible, allowing them to share their stories, while I'll viewers and listeners can celebrate them, while also gaining perspective and education on what our veterans endured and the skills they've developed.

My MOS was 0341 Mortarman School Trained Graduate from what was then " ITS ", or Infantry Training School at Camp San Onofre, aboard Pendleton. Not all 0341's were School trained then ! Circa 1977 We were trained first in 60's, then 81mm Mortars. Proud to say my Platoon Was Division Champions Two years in a row ! Where I was a Squad Leader. Believe me, we Gun Drilled our asses off ! When I learned of this tragic accident, I was unaware of which Mortar was involved, but was horrified at the prospect ! Reading here, I discovered it was the 60mm. The smaller of the Two, for the uninitiated, or those that don't do well with numbers ! Things certainly may have changed over the span of some 40 plus years, so forgive me if the Mortar I mention is no longer used ? As I recall the 60 could be fired either by Gravity feed, or trigger fired by a latch type affair at the Base of the tube. So that would be one question I would have, which method were they practicing ? It's hard to phantom this happening, only in my opinion, which means nothing, but anyone that's been around a Mortar, no matter it's size, knows they have quite a loud Thump when firing ! And only get louder the larger the gun ! We had a few failures to fire on the 81's, while I was there. Some known as, " Hang Fires ", where the round would not fully travel to the firing pin at the Base of the tube ! Protocol as I remember, was to kick the tube near the Base, in an attempt to dislodge the round, and allow it to fire normally. Then there was the occasional, " Misfire " ! This was always the ones that made my ass pucker, as after waiting to see if there was a slow burn, or defective primer. Much like the end of a shotgun shell ! After leaving the Mortar set for likely some indiscriminate amount of time, ( as I simply don't recall ), and evacuating the Gun pit except for pertinent personnel, then came the hairy part, which was to turn the Tube in its Base Plate maybe 180 degrees, to unlock it, one from the other ! Don't remember whose responsibility it was to do what, as I think it typically fell on the shoulders of the Squad leader, and Platoon Sargent ? But one would lift the bottom of the Tube to such an angle, as to let Gravity make the round slide forward, and into the waiting cupped hands on the opposite end ! Trying not to hit the detonator fuse at the tip of the round as it slid out of the Tube ! Then that round was placed in an empty Gun Pit some distance from everyone, and EOD called for Safe removal, and disposal ! Then hearing about this explosion sent shivers down my spine, not to mention being heart sick, to think of those that died, or were injured that day, and for their Families ! I have to wonder if anyone actually witnessed the handling of the rounds, and their being loaded ? Or is this just a best guess scenario, and the Truth taken to the Grave with those involved ? Hearing this, really took me back, and made me appreciate that we had no accidents like this, while we trained ! Fortunately the closest to being injured for my Squad came while we were involved in a training exercise, where we were marking targets for fast movers, with, " Willy Peter ", aka White Phosphorus, which have off fair amounts of smoke while burning ! Also in support somewhere to our rear, were 155's that fired the Short Round that landed in front and to the right of my Gun Pit ! Sobering moment when we discovered what had happened, but fortunately no one was injured, as we all stood there dumbfounded ! As we were never told anyone was firing over our heads ! But my first and only time I heard an Artillery round as it made an oscillating tearing noise as it passed over my head ! A sound that has stayed with me ! Prayers to those who gave their lives, and to those left behind, both Family and Marine Brothers ! GOD BLESS SEMPER FI 1/7 WEAPONS CO. 81's Division Champions Camp San Mateo '77 - '80

Roy's story is most important for any veteran struggling with issues during/following military service. Glad to hear he found solace returning to something he quit as a young man and returned to heal as a veteran. BTW: not that I would expect he would know Miles Vining or Kevin Schranz but they also served in 1/9 at the same time as the terrible tragedy he recounts. Miles & Kevin wrote 'Into Helmand with the Walking Dead: A Story of Marine Corps Combat in Afghanistan' which provides more details on the accident. During my Marine Corps career I was in 1/9 for a few months when the 9th Marines were stationed on Okinawa in 1970s.

This young man embodies what a marine is all about. I am so grateful for men like these. What’s sad about the majority of these brave warrior’s enlistments is they go to battle and endure the unspeakable and their EAOS expires and the vast majority of them separate honorably which is most Understandable. I really wish they could get a taste of serving during peacetime. After what they’ve seen it’s a total cakewalk and really enjoyable. I turned down a 35K SRB tax free so totally get it. When deployed in hostile conditions the only thing you do is count the days to the wake-up’s.. god bless this marine and all who serve.

You veterans, don’t EVER think that our thanking you for your service, giving you veterans’ discounts, buying you a meal, or whatever is in ANY way taking pity on you or disrespecting you or your service in any way. It is our way of showing our gratitude to you for your service to us and our nation, for your willingness to protect us and our way of life, and for your sacrifices whether or not you ever deployed overseas or saw any combat. And don’t downplay your sacrifices! The absences from family and friends alone is a huge sacrifice. I taught overseas for DoDDS, and I have witnessed first hand the psychological stresses alone that your service places on you and your loved ones. I’m an old man, but I tear up when I watch videos of service personnel surprising their loved ones, especially the kids. It is an honor for us to be able to honor you by our expressions of gratitude to you for your service! (And don’t EVER think that those military perqs and discounts are just for you! They are for your families and loved ones in toto. You have EARNED them! Accept them proudly! Several years ago, I saw a POW license plate on a car at a gas station. I go out of my way to thank our vets, so I thanked the elderly driver only for him to burst into tears, saying that I was the first person to ever show gratitude for his service. He had been a marine in the Pacific during WW2 and had been captured by the Japanese. He had always felt guilty for having been captured. Similarly, I have heard heartbreaking stories from Vietnam vets for proudly returning to the States only to be reviled and assaulted to the point that many literally hid their service. That is an incredible injustice! Let us express our appreciation to you and accept it as the honor it is intended to be! One of my distant grandfathers was one of the first marines, serving on the Frigate Deane during the revolution, and I share DNA with servicemen in every American war - including the Texas Revolution - as far as I know. However, I was unable to serve, so please accept my gratitude and the gratitude of all of us. You are special, and you are appreciated!!!

Hey brother Marine here. When you told the about the time you were on the range and you heard the gunfire and you took a knee me and my buddies used to do the same thing growing up on the South Side of Chicago. Every single time we heard gun fire. Whether distant or close when we heard it we ALWAYS ducked. Fast forward to when I joined the Corps that particular skill set proofed invaluable because I learned early put cover or elevation between you and the bullet to decrease the chance if getting hit. You have what we all have. That thing called PTSD. And guess what. You don't have to be in the military to have it. I have it just from watching the Twin Towers Attack.I cry every time the memorial comes around. I'm a veteran and I talk to a shrink. It's good for me and the people that I care about. I'm hooked on this channel. The different combat experiences just absolutely shock me. The adversity and close calls that these warriors have survived, the injuries both physical and psychological that they have survived and still struggle with are heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. I was diagnosed with PTSD because of some gnarly stuff I was involved in on duty as a deputy but over a course of years. I was never shot at, never killed anyone so I was lucky. Some of my brothers weren't. Hearing what these guys have gone through makes me feel soft as fuck lol, but It also helps me to gain perspective on just how lucky I am. Towards the end of my career I went down the spiral of alcohol, women, prescription drugs and the world collapsed. I'm doing ok now and some days are struggles but these guys lift me up and give me hope and make me proud of my nation's warfighters. I am compelled to run my yap again ! But when I listened to your Pickle Meadows story, aka Bridgeport Mountain Warfare Training Center, and heard of your number of casualties, I flashed back to when I was there, and sustained a back injury that haunted me for 25 yesrs before I had surgery at L-4 L- 5 ! My spine was damaged while on rappel ! I was paired up with some guy way heavier than I, and had no idea who he was, or where he came from, as he didn't belong to our platoon ! Didn't realize I was hurt until we were about to run back down to Base Camp, and while standing in formation, I lifted my arms above my head as I was stretching and yawning, and that is where all Hell broke out ! Little good did it do to report it ! After running in massive pain down the mountain, I was sent to see the Corpsman, too which he barely checked me for anything, and decided in his infinite wisdom, that there was nothing wrong with me ! As a result I was made to hump a PRC 77 field radio on guard duty that night ! I'm not sure now but this must have been at the end of our deployment, as I don't know how I dealt with the pain, other than tuff it out ? No reflection on me per se, but more Marine Corps ! Some may understand ? I do remember us putting in near San Onofre beach, and humping back to San Mateo, where there was no way in Hell I could keep up ! As I was still humping my weapons and my pack ! I don't even know if they had MRI's or CT scans back in the Seventies ? But that is what I needed, but was never sent to Mainside to the Naval hospital, and I think sick bay gave me a cane to walk with until I quit limping ! That took some time, and I was grateful that we were in the rear, and had fallen back to the more mundane tasks on Base. As I remember we had one other casualty, a recently promoted Corporal that broke his ankle in a sliding fall down the side of a Mountain, I witnessed ! As I said, I put up with that injury never having reported it to the V.A., after my first attempt at trying to get the fillings replaced in my teeth, that began falling out barely a year after my discharge ! Only to be told it had to be " Service " connected ! Reserve Navy Dentist liked to practice on us, as our Barracks was right across from Dental ! Just seemed too convenient ! Later as a Civilian, the Company I was employed with was building manufacturing plants in Mexico, and closing our plant in the States, I luckily was able to have surgery before they closed ! Just my tell from the Hell you spoke of from M.W.T.C. Bridgeport California ! ooh.....FUCKING ....RAW ! SEMPER FI

it was a double load. one was already in the tube, someone dropped another one in, detonating the bottom round, then launched the second one.

I was in gàrmsir afghan 2009. I served six years as an 0331. I got out in 14'. I remember being deployed when the mortar accident happened. Our co pulls us on and says hey this unit just took a mass cass and we are in river city if anyone needs to talk to chaps let us know. We All looked at each other dumb founded like I didn't even know they were deployed. Then we heard what happened. I was on lejuene all my 6 yrs.

This Marine rules. Best one I've seen on this channel out of I think 5 so far. I like how he mentioned the Taliban giving out their real names. If you were fighting a resistance in an occupied country, as a Westerner familiar with things like identification and information databases, it would be obvious to give the occupying soldiers a false identity.
