Geez....... I miss this man so much. I come back often to revisit his demos and presentations. He was such a joy to watch and listen to; even in his later years when he was having difficulties. God Bless his Memory.

small problem with four dog stove is that you cannot buy bugger all from them, no knives no, firestarters its a really terrible site with no search option, please upgrade it to a more user friendly site I think you'll find you have lost a lot of business a great simple video from young Mors thx

Actual bird feathers ignite readily with a spark. If you see a bird feather, pick it up and put it in your tinder bag

That's a nice calm sunny day, and typical backcountry fire lighting, not adverse. I think this is titled incorrectly. I would call this good basic feathersticking. I would like to see fire lighting in adverse conditions like rain or blowing snow from Mors. I would like to see some tricks for keeping the tinder dry and how to keep it from blowing away. Wind would prevent sparking the feathers in his hand standing up like that. i.e.,Need to show how to build a platform and wind screen for the fire in the snow,use a Sportsman's blanket to shelter, etc . The shavings on the ground would have blown away, etc.. It's tough...

+Frederick Ernst Despite the lack of actual adverse conditions at the time of this video, it is the most practicable way of starting a fire during those nasty days, I.e.- snow storm, rain, wind ect. That is the point of the video.

You have to simulate the conditions. Somewhat like wind tunnel testing in engineering to truly assess the techniques. Fair weather testing doesn't suffice. I'm sure Mors would agree.

Oh you are absolute correct however this is already a proven method. There is no need to continually "test" the same method over and over again. If it works it works, that simple. Mr Kochanski is demonstrating the technique used when conditions aren't favourable. It has nothing to do with the sun and lack of wind, rain or snow in the video.

You are missing the point Caley it is much more difficult in adverse conditions than the fair weather conditions in this video. For example, his feathers that fell on the ground would have simply blown away.

+Caley Welner what he needs to do is grab this tree by one hand and quickly take it down in 18" sections with his small forest axe, then take it to his sheltered area like a cave or lean-to, then shave, then show us starting the fire.

Keeps getting that knife blade close to his throat when he puts it back in his neck sheath . . . ouch

Maybe it would be safer if kept in a sheath horizontally or diagonally across his chest on the outside of his jacket or on his belt.

Och I Jimmy, in the Highlands when wa oot n aboot hunting them tasty Wee Wild Haggis Beasties.. call me a boring add scott, but when wa al hungered & wi need to light a fire, to deep fry wa Mars Bar's a think its much easier & faster to just carry a Zippo Lighter in ya Sporran, then hevin to fiddle aboot, with them sparky metal rod tingys, I, a think a need a wee dram o Iron Bru.. +Skeptic Spartan Hey friend, you are quite right. I know Mors is a big believer in the Mora and actually has his own knife. Anyway... I feel that it could of been a custom version of the Original Bear Grylls knife before he went with Gerber. If im right its a drop point straight edge, not the serrated version. The closest i can find online is this one www.bayleyknife.com/site/index.aspx They are the people that made his original signature knife. But on this video the handle seems more rounded, maybe its had a micarta handle put on, not sure. Anyway hope its helps a little bit. Lemme know if you have any success. As much as I respect Mors, he seems to be taking the long road here. If he wants to start a fire in adverse conditions, why doesn't he just peel off the birch bark from the white birch right behind him? There really isn't a reason for him to be working so hard.

i agree with your point, it would have been easier. but its good to know options :) maybe the part of forest your in has no birch, your in an emergency situation And you havnt gatheres any beforehand

Derek Pearse the tree behind him is a poplar which has a tough bark where as you think its a birch which has a paper like bark. learn the difference, it could very well save your life one day. i used to get them mixed up as well until my father told me to remember this adage. poplar = paper & birch = bark but no matter what son, father knows best and you sonny are mistaken. so keep your Bs and Ps together and remember you are wrong. lol.

I am not going to beat on my most valuable tool with a club. I'm also old-fashioned, which means I'm also going to use my BIC lighter, or a match, to start the fire.

+James Ritchie Question, what's the coldest weather that you were able to start a fire with you BIC or a match? Cause they don't work at many times in Canada or very cold weather

James Ritchie, in Canada in the middle of winter good luck with you bic and i hope your hands arent too cold to fumble with matches. I've had better luck with a bowdrill made of willow and a boot lace in a foot of snow with cold dry brush than i have with a bic lighter at - 30 and a breeze. thats when i bought my ferro rod and havent looked back.

The dude looks like he is about to drop dead any second....
